SECTION CHAIR’S MESSAGE

This autumn, Wilderness Trekking School Committee is offering a discount to members of all three CMC age sections. Members of these groups will receive a $20 discount off the WTS registration WHEN they use the discount form included in the web site indicated below.

Wilderness Trekking School Starts September 14

Get ready for hiking in Colorado's fabulous golden autumn! The

crowds are gone, the foothills are crisp and cool, and the thunder gods are sleeping. Wilderness Trekking School (WTS) is for those looking for adventure - AND - for those who just want to enjoy the scenery.

WTS is a great introduction to the Colorado Mountain Club and a place to meet new friends. WTS is Colorado Mountain Club's largest school, a comprehensive course on mountain hiking. Students are all ages, from 18 to 80. If you're new to hiking, WTS gives you the opportunity to learn how to travel safely - and with confidence - in the backcountry. If you're an experienced hiker, WTS gives you a chance to review, to enhance your skills, and possibly to fill in some gaps. WTS also fulfills one of the requirements to obtain a Denver Group C hiker classification and to attend Basic Mountaineering School.

Topics covered include: • Essential gear, helping you decide what you need to

buy and carry • Off-trail travel techniques, from boulders and talus to

tundra • Map and compass skills, figuring out where you are,

navigation and route-finding

• Weather, how to anticipate and handle wind, rain, lightning, and snow

• Nutrition, helping you choose what food to carry • Overnight survival techniques and how to handle

a backcountry emergency • Snow travel and avalanche awareness, handling

unexpected snow on the trail • Leave No Trace practices

Students have the opportunity to learn techniques of safe backcountry travel and to practice in a non-competitive, non-confrontational setting. Students plan and complete a graduation hike with their field group. WTS is a great place to learn and practice new skills, make new friends, and become a safe backcountry traveler.

The course consists of five Tuesday nights and five field days. Students are divided into groups of 10-12 people, based on hiking pace, conditioning, and prior experience. Instructor teams consist of a senior instructor and two assistant instructors.

Fall 2010 classes will be on Tuesdays Sep. 14, 21, Oct. 12, 19, and 26. Field days are on your choice of all Thursdays, Saturdays, or Sundays on Sep. 23, 25, or 26; Sept 30, Oct. 2 or 3; Oct. 14, 16, or 17; Oct. 21, 23, or 24; Dec. 9, 11, or 12. Make-up arrangements are available for a missed class and may be available for a missed field day, depending upon instructor resources.

The fall 2010 session starts Tuesday, September 14th at

6:30 PM in the American Mountaineering Center in Golden. Tuition is $90 for Denver group members, $100 for other CMC group members. For more details and an application, go to http://www.wts.cmcschools.org or call the CMC office at 303-279-3080 ext. 2.

OTHER DAY HIKES During July, we had two more good hikes with great groups of hikers, and got into the Indian Peaks Wilderness area for the first time this summer with our hike to Jasper Lake. Then just this past week we had our first C hike–just west of Frisco to Eccles Pass at 12,000 feet. On our way to the pass we went through a beautiful meadow filled with almost every variety of wildflower. The group was so inspired that they set down for a photo in the middle of the flowers and started singing The Sound Of Music–well, sort of.

For August we intend to repeat this pattern–another hike in the Indian Peaks Wilderness area and another C Hike.

HIKING This past month we were able to hike the higher elevations. However, due to weather, road conditions, trail closures, etc., we had to make changes weekly. When possible, a different hike was substituted and still many enjoyed the opportunity to get outdoors with like-minded seniors.

Although our groups are large we have been blessed with many leaders willing to help guide on the trail and accommodate the various paces. Most of our hikes are rated "A"; some will be rated "B"; and some will have tight restrictions on group size. Whenever possible we will try to offer 2 hikes on the same day but in different areas. To do that, we rely on many to volunteer to guide a group on the designated hike. Many have been working hard to help and our thanks go to: Sandy Curran, Jeff Flax, Myrna Goldberg, Marc Hasfjord, Sue Henley, Elaine Kallos, Barb Schwarz, Carl Slater, Pete Spandau and yours truly.

BIKING The biking season is in full swing. Our weekly rides are usually on Fridays with an average of 27 participants each week. It is a great group of welcoming friends that enjoy the exercise and fellowship of the outings.

Most of our trips are on paved, level bike paths and average about 10 to 12 mph with stops. Occasionally we encounter some hills and gravel trails. Infrequently, we have a slower group when a volunteer leader steps forward. The essential items for participating are plenty of water, necessary tools to repair a flat tire (replacement tube), appropriate clothing for changes in the weather, and carrying ID and a medical card. The wearing of a helmet is mandatory.

Email notices are sent out several days prior to the excursions to describe the weekly ride and the meeting location. A slower group will be announced in these emails. An optional lunch will follow at a nearby restaurant. Most meeting times are 8:00 AM with departure at 8:30 AM during the hotter summer months.

Guests are allowed with signing of a wavier form. Guests may participate

in two of our activities before joining Rocky Mountain Over The Hill Gang (RMOTHG) section and the Denver Group of CMC.

If you are interested in riding, please contact Pete Spandau by email at [email protected] to get on the cycling list. Only RMOTHG members will be added to the list and you’ll receive a weekly email reminder for you to signup at www.cmc.org.

AMERICAN INDIAN HISTORY TOUR AND FOOD SUNDAY, SEPT. 12, 1:00- 4:30 PM

DEADLINE FOR SIGNUP, SEPT. 8TH Are you curious about Denver’s early days when white settlers arrived in the land of the Arapahoe Indians? Meet me at 12:45 PM before we join our guide from History Colorado, the Colorado Historical Society in front of Union Station for a two hour walking tour covering the years 1858 - 1870. Learn about early interactions between settlers and the Indians up until the time of the railroad. On-street parking in LODO is free on Sundays, and you are encouraged to carpool.

After our tour, we will drive to Tocabe Restaurant at 44th and Lowell for an American Indian meal. Tocabe was featured in the March 2010 edition of Denver’s 5280 magazine. We will learn about the food, during a presentation by one of the restaurant’s Native American

owners, before ordering our meal. Many of the main courses and desserts are assembled on delicious and light fry bread made from a secret Osage Indian family recipe. Options are available for vegetarians, and sauces range from mild to hot.

Cost for the tour is $10, and meals at Tocabe average $8 excluding a drink. Sign up as a member on www.CMC.org by going to programs and social activities. Talk to Jane Vanderkolk, who made the initial contact with the Denver History Museum, for some interesting insights about Indian culture and history.

Election of Board Members

Three Rocky Mountain Over The Hill Gang section three new board members will be elected at the Annual Dinner Meeting on September 26th by those section members present. Ballots will be handed out and nominations will be accepted from the floor. The ballots will be collected, counted and the three winners announced. Listed below are bios of the candidates:

Connie Carroll I am honored to be asked to run for the RMOTHG board of directors and I feel that my professional and volunteer experience have provided me with a solid foundation that will allow me to excel in this position. Specifically, I am a retired teacher so I have the time to serve and I also have a variety of volunteer and board experience. I was a board member for Lakeview Museum Arts and Science Council of Peoria, St. Philomena School in Peoria, and the Junior League of Peoria, Illinois. I also served as chairperson for project planning for the Junior League. In addition, I was chairperson of both the arts committee and the restoration committee that oversaw the restoration of the historic Hershel Balance house, which later became the Junior League headquarters. I did research for the Peoria Historical Society for a publication which resulted in Peoria II, a historical inventory of the city before 1940. I also served as co-chair of the Peoria Notre High School annual auction. When my husband and I moved to Denver 3 years ago, we were given a membership to CMC as a gift from our children. Shortly thereafter, I joined the RMOTHG and began biking, hiking and attending social functions. It has been a wonderful way to meet new and interesting people while exploring all Colorado has to offer. The RMOTHG is a well oiled machine made up of a diverse group of people who have one important thing in common, the love of the outdoors. It would be a rewarding experience to be a member of the board. Marion Dries Having been a member of OTHGI and now RMOTHG for over 14 years, I have had the privilege of enjoying Colorado's beautiful outdoors with like-minded enthusiasts. I have been a Hiking Coordinator and leader for over 8 years. I have also been a Ski Guide for seniors at Keystone Ski Resort for about 8 years. Being on this Board gives me the opportunity to add some of my expertise to these endeavors. The best part of all this, is that I have met many wonderful people through the years of whom many have become friends. Thank you for allowing me to serve you. Kathy Joyce I am a life time resident of Colorado and have been retired from teaching in the Denver Public Schools for about 3 years. I have been a HOA Board member for the past 9 years and I am also the newsletter editor for the Flatirons Ski Club in Boulder. I volunteer with the Denver Public Library, Denver Public Schools and the Denver Rescue Mission. I have been a CMC member for 22 years and a member of the amazing RMOTHG group for 3 years. I have enjoyed the multitude of opportunities to get outside and experience our beautiful state. I have enjoyed helping with the volunteer activities too. It has been wonderful to meet and make new friends with people that love to do what I do! I have helped organize a few activities for the RMOTHG and am eager to help wherever I am needed. I would be very honored to serve and represent you on the RMOTHG Board.
