Delta-Tooth HarrowTHE SH PE
OF THE FUTURE
Will not fold over on itself, allowing tight turns. Travels at high speeds. Will not tangle. Will fold up for easy transportation on trailer or pickup. Can be pulled end-wise through small gates. Will wear longer because
the material is considerably harder than steel rods yet it has great strength and good ductility. Will clean itself of trash.Won’t require repeated passes over areas of heavy manure concentrations because of much greater weight & number of tines.Produces smaller pieces and better distribution. The Hi-Valley Harrow won’t ever cause you to regret you bought it!

86 THE FENCE POST 2012 RODEO & SUMMER EVENTS
Colorado State Fair Celebrates 140th YearAugust 24 - September 3
STORY BY ROBYN SCHERER, M.AGR.STAFF REPORTER
PHOTOS COURTESY OF CO STATE FAIR
T here are many fairs held throughout Colorado, but none are as big as the Colorado State Fair. Held from August 24-September 3 at the
Colorado State Fairgrounds in Pueblo. The fair offers a variety of events for attendees.
“Throughout the years, the Fair has been dedicated to providing an educational, interactive, and fun learning experience for Coloradans,” said Christi Lightcap, Communications Director for the Colorado Department of Agriculture.
The fair offers a variety of competitions from livestock to baking. “For producers, we have provided the opportunity for them to showcase their skills through our competitive livestock events and general
entry department which highlights various competitions such as crops and baking,” said Lightcap.
The livestock shows offer competitions for youth in the market classes, and competition for adults in the open breeding classes. Youth can compete in market hogs, lambs, goats and cattle. Open exhibitors can compete in a variety of different breeds for cattle, sheep and goats. Youth exhibitors can also exhibit animals in the open breeding classes.
The market beef and market goat shows will be held on September 25, and the market swine show will be held on August 25. The market lamb show will be held on August 26. All of the grand champion selections will take place on the evening of the show.
The open meat breed sheep show and open breeding bull cattle show will be held on August 28. The open female cattle show, along with the open wool breed show will be held on August 29.

THE FENCE POST 2012 RODEO & SUMMER EVENTS 87
The open boat goat show will be held on August 30 and 31, and the dairy goat show will be held on September 2 and 3.
In addition to the livestock shows, the fair also offers concerts, rodeos, a demolition derby, and many other daily events. One of these events is the Lemurs ans Exotic Petting Zoo.
“Featuring Ring-Tailed Lemurs, this attraction allows you to get up close and personal with these fascinating creatures. Other animals you can pet may include a zebra, camel, monkeys, a buffalo and more,” said Lightcap.
Another event being held is called One World. “This unique animal show gives you the opportunity to experience animals rarely seen in captivity, including an Asian Fishing Cat. As our two magnificent Bengal tigers make their appearance and demonstrate their natural grace and beauty, we remind the guests about their endangered status. The mere presence of these magnificent creatures will most certainly inspire your guests. Learn more about the rain forest areas we are losing each day, and some of the amazing creatures that live in them,” she said.
A comedic animal event called Pets Overboard will also be held throughout the fair. “A show for the whole family, the cast of dogs, cats and rats will keep you laughing and entertained on their journey on board their pirate ship while they look for the lost treasure. The animals in the show have all been rescued from shelters and other animal organizations,” said Lightcap.
However, the fun events and attractions are not the only part of the fair that visitors can participate in.
“We also offer opportunities for all attendees to learn about the important role producers play in all our lives. We feature educational booths that focus on food production, displays from various commodity groups, livestock shows, etc. This is often the only time that urban families can truly get in touch with their rural roots and teach children about the importance,” she said.
She continued, “Every year, the Colorado Department of Agriculture fills the Agriculture Pavilion with educational and exciting displays designed to entertain the young and young-at-heart.”
Educating people about agriculture is important to Lightcap, and everyone else who is involved with the fair. “Agriculture affects every person in the state. It is often said that, ‘if you eat, you’re involved
in agriculture.’ It is important for people to understand that the food on their table is safe, abundant, and affordable because of the hard work of our farmers and ranchers,” she said.
She added, “The state fair is absolutely a good chance to talk to people about agriculture. From our youth participants to our rodeo performers to our cake bakers, everyone is participating in agriculture just by attending the Fair.”
The attendance for the fair is expected to be high. “We hope to have half-a-million people attend the Fair. While that number can be impacted by a number of factors, it is our average number of attendees,” Lightcap said.
The fair has grown over the last 140 years. “The Colorado State Fair has definitely earned its place in history. What is even more amazing is that Colorado has only been a state since 1876, which means the Colorado State Fair is older than the state itself,” she said.

88 THE FENCE POST 2012 RODEO & SUMMER EVENTS
Started in 1869, the fair was originally very different from what it is today.
“In 1869, approximately 2,000 people converged on what is now Pueblo for a horse exhibition and from that meager beginning was born the Colorado State Fair. The Fair continues to call Pueblo home, and in fact, has only cancelled the fair once during its entire history. In 1917, during World War I, the Fairgrounds’ horse stables and open space offered an ideal training facility for the Army National Guard,” said Lightcap.
She continued, “Throughout the years, the Colorado State Fair has grown in size and popularity. Today, nearly half a million people walk the historic grounds for the 11-day fair, and it has become the centerpiece of summer fun in Colorado by promoting youth and agriculture.”
Supporting youth and agriculture is the primary goal of the fair, and many of the events and attractions revolved around this goal. “While much of the Fair revolves around entertainment, our primary purpose revolves around education. In fact, the Fair provides $340,000 of its annual budget and facilities for the FFA and 4-H organizations. These are great organizations for not only teaching about agriculture, but in creating a solid moral foundation for our leaders of tomorrow,” Lightcap stated.
