WE REMEMBER Lyle David

Dusty Redenius BJ Lindy

We convey our heartfelt sympathy to the families, your loved ones will be missed.

Oh the sweet month of February is here! I personally enjoy February as we celebrate Valentine’s Day. It is full of flowers, chocolates and lots of to-do! But for our residents, it can bring back memories of sadness or be a time in which they feel forgotten. Thus, I encourage you to-do something extra special for your resident, friend or family member during February. Whether it is a small token to let them know you are thinking of them (they love to receive mail!) or an extra visit; anything to help break up the winter doldrums. We are planning a special Valentine’s meal at noon on Friday, February 13th for residents and their spouses. This will be a fun and classy affair complete with sparkling grape juice and a delightful dessert!

On another note, I am expecting a new baby soon with a due date of February 18th. Since this will be our last baby, I am planning on taking the full 12 weeks off, but will stop in for a few hours here and there to ensure all is flowing well in my absence. During that time, I trust that my leadership team members, as always, will be able to assist with your questions and concerns. A representative from our home office, Vetter Health Services, will strive to be in the building approximately one day a week as well.

For the last three years we have had the privilege of having a wireless call light system to ensure our residents’ needs were being met in a timely manner. In order to improve communication within the facility, we have recently transitioned to a new 2-in-1 walkie talkie/call light pager system. The old pager system was quite noisy and you could always hear beeping as call lights went off. This new system entails each team member wearing a headset so that the call light pages are audible in their ear. Along with this, there is a lapel mic so that they can easily communicate with their co-workers through the walkie talkie portion of the system. You will notice other team members wearing headsets as well, as they are also utilizing the communication piece. Our goal overall is to eliminate all overhead paging making it a quieter environment for our residents to live.

Shady Oaks is a proud member of the Vetter Health Services family, and as we open the page to 2015, we also reflect on over 40 years of dedication to changing the view of long-term care. Jack and Eldora Vetter’s legacy with Vetter Health Services began back in 1975 when they purchased their first facility in Fairbury, Nebraska. They embraced a personal mission to give the elderly members of our communities a place to feel respected, secure, comfortable and happy. This legacy has led Vetter Health Services to where we are today; owning and managing over 30 facilities in five different states. From the

beginning, Jack and Eldora stressed relationships are what matter the most. Everything is based on the philosophy that if connections

between people are strong, then our residents and team members are going to be healthy, happy and productive. We then in turn Page 2

have the support of so many that brings us together as one big family! In our 40th year and beyond, our passion and dedication of serving is stronger than ever. We are grateful for what has been and inspired by what the future holds, as we continue to change the view of long-term care. Stay tuned for celebrations of the decades to be held each quarter at Shady Oaks!

Warm wishes to you in the midst of this Iowa winter,

~ Jennifer Blair

In Appreciation Heartfelt thanks to those who have given their time, talents, and gifts. Your sharing changes lives.

Team Appreciation

In 2014 Shady Oaks implemented a new employee appreciation program called “Fishy Notes.” When a team member sees another team member going above and beyond for residents, family members, and other team members, they can give that team member a “Fishy Note.” When a Team Member has three “Fishy Notes” he or she can put them in the “Fishy Bowl.” Quarterly a note is pulled from the “Fishy Bowl” and that person wins a small prize. At the end of the year larger prizes are awarded. Leanne Everhart (Left) won a Kindle Fire HD and Megan Skidmore won a Thirty One bag full of Bath and Body products.

Congratulations ladies! We love how this program helps coworkers recognize each other on a consistent basis!

Shady Oaks Helps Team Member Overcome Obstacles and Expand on Her Life’s Aspirations

When Justine Mohr began employment with Shady Oaks in December 2013, she didn’t know what opportunities awaited her. “I applied at Shady Oaks for a Housekeeping Assistant position because I love cleaning and thought I would really enjoy working with the elderly.” During the last year here, Justine experienced another vantage point, not as a team member, but as a family member when her grandmother was a resident for a short time. “It really helped me to see the bigger picture…it is different when it is your OWN family member that is the resident! I was able to see both the good and bad and that made me want to become a C.N.A. and make a difference. The hard part though, was that I was told (by outsiders) I wouldn’t be able to handle the job.”

Justine’s story began when she 5 years old and had a stroke that affected her right side. “After my stroke I went through 3 years of therapy and was able to use my right hand fully for a short time. Today I wear braces on both my right hand and my right foot.” Throughout her youth and even into high school she was told many times that she would never graduate or make anything of herself because she was different. “Those statements were very disheartening and part of me started to believe it, but I wanted to prove everyone wrong.”

The longer Justine was at Shady Oaks, the more she wanted to explore a C.N.A. career. It wasn’t until the current Director of Nursing, Jenny Vote, believed in her that Justine really felt she could do it. “Jenny told me that she loved my positive attitude and would take me in a heartbeat onto her team if I wanted to become a C.N.A. She gave me the confidence to press on.”

Justine took the C.N.A. class though a facility we have an agreement with in Storm Lake and finished it the beginning of December. Justine said about the class, “The C.N.A. class was very hard, but the instructor kept me going. She said that I have more drive that anyone she’s ever seen. I believe this is because I not only wanted to, but felt I need to prove everyone wrong.”

After completing the class, a person must take both a written and skills test to become officially certified. During her skills test the State Tester told Justine that the mock bed bath she gave was the best she had ever seen. Justine has vowed that she will not let her physical limitations hold her back and that she tries to always keep an open mind and be positive no matter the situation. “What motivates me is knowing I have tried my absolute best for my residents and my co-workers. I like to keep a smile on my face to help lift others’ spirits as well!”

As far as what the future holds for Justine, she stated that she really wants to get a good grasp on being the best C.N.A. she can above all else. Eventually though, she would like to take the CMA (Certified Medication Assistant) class to expand on her skills and possibly even pursue an LPN career.

Shady Oaks is now taking applications for others that are interested in pursuing a career as a C.N.A. and after hiring the right candidate for a position, we will not only send you to class, but pay for your mileage and testing fees. If you having an interest, please stop by or call Kate at (712)464-3106 or apply online at www.shadyoakslakecity.com.

Recipe For Smiles The recipe for

bringing smiles to faces of our residents is a simple one: add a baby.

The resulting smile is instantaneous.

Take Time To Care...Lessons to Last a Lifetime At Shady Oaks we take pride in hiring “World Class” team members and giving them “World Class” training.

“Take Time to Care” instructors Administrator Jennifer Blair and People Development Coordinator Kate Smith, and join together to offer a program that includes a long-term care focused content, an interactive format, and section-specific learning goals.

Through our “Take Time to Care” program new team members focus five areas, with the first entitled, “Take Time to Make a Friend.” This section introduces our relationship-building commitment and discusses the "stranger to friend" concept and its impact on our service. Section two emphasizes taking time to “Nurture the Whole Person” and looks at ways that team members can care for each resident in a holistic manner. “Take Time to Understand,” stresses the importance of good listening skills, both professionally and personally. A key piece of this is exploring non-verbal communication and its role in effective communication.

During “Take Time to be a Team Player” section, the principles of teamwork and how attitudes affect the team are covered, including learning tools for conflict resolution and understanding the difference between individual and team success. The final portion is entitled “Take Time to Enjoy Life,” emphasizing the importance of caring for ourselves as caregivers. Specifically, managing and modifying daily stressors and adapting their responses to stress.

Deb Goesch, a recent participant stated, “It was inspiring! The program gave me a broad view of myself and the knowledge to be able to help others.” Team member, Jen Hicks commented, “It was great, the day went fast I learned new things about myself and my teammates.”

Though prizes are awarded for activities and participation, the best reward our team members receive is the inspiration they take away to provide quality care for our residents.

Madison Moments Residents (and team members) enjoyed

looking at and modeling a few of the hats that Minnie Huster, Culinary Supervisor, brought in from her mother’s collection. Deb Zenor, Life Enrichment Assistant, led the group discussion on the purpose and history of the different styles of hats through the years. It was interesting to hear the ladies talk about the hats they remembered their mothers and grandmothers wearing.

Pardon Our Progress As mentioned in last month’s newsletter, the remodel of the Cinema, Library, and Jefferson Neighborhood began

on January 12th. The abatement has been completed in the Cinema, the built-in shelves removed, and the new cabinets have been installed. The Library and first few resident rooms are in process and should be completed soon. Thank you for your patience and understanding during our remodel!
