Emirates Park Scone Cup Carnival 2014Scone Race Club is gearing up for the 2014 Emirates Park Scone Cup Carnival and what a feast of racing and entertainment it promises to be.Australia’s richest country carnival is growing in status each year and with the Coolmore Dark Jewel Classic now being upgraded to Group 3 status, the $400,000 Inglis Guineas and fi ve Listed races on the program, the racing is fi rst class. No other county race club in NSW has a group race and this is a ringing endorsement for a race which has attracted some wonderful fi llies and mares in recent years.

Scone is famous for its title of ‘Australia’s Horse Capital’ and some of the Southern Hemisphere’s greatest thoroughbred nurseries are located in its environs. These studs have shown their support for the carnival with breeding and racing luminaries Emirates Park, Coolmore and Darley, auction house Inglis, Arrowfi eld and premium horse feed company Pryde’s throwing their weight behind the event with major sponsorship.

Emirates Park Scone Cup Carnival 2014Continued from page 2.It is worth noting that every single runner in this years Golden Slipper was sired by a Hunter Valley based stallion. What an amazing achievement!

This ties in well with the tag line of the club – “where the racing and breeding industries meet”.

Noel Leckie, the Chairman of Scone Race Club is delighted the success and profi le of the carnival continues to build. “Our team has worked hard to ensure everything is in place for an excellent two days of racing and entertainment. We look forward to welcoming back past winning trainers, Anthony Cummings, Team Hawkes, Clarry Connors, Grahame Begg and others who will be vying to win the outstanding prize money and valuable black type”.

Emirates Fashions on the Field will attract a bevy of followers with over $15,000 in prizes to be won including a business class trip for two to New Zealand kindly provided by Emirates Airlines and Helloworld in Scone. We will be ably assisted with the organisation of this prestigious event by major sponsor Sharon Lenton from Thoroughbred Events Australia. Past winners have travelled from across Australia to compete for awards including ‘Best Dressed Lady’, ‘Best Dressed Gentleman’ and ‘Best Millinery’.

“City class racing with country style” – there is nothing quite like the atmosphere at Scone during the carnival. Australia’s richest country race meeting with close to $2million in prize money; a city class racing surface and country hospitality. It doesn’t get any better than that!

Vibes Virtuoso national tour and CD releaseAward-winning vibraphone player Nick Parnell is set to entrance audiences from around Australia with his mallets of steel. Launching his new CD release, Vibes Virtuoso, Nick will be performing in the Upper Hunter, at Muswellbrook South Public Scholl on Monday 12 May as part of his national tour, accompanied by stunning pianist Michael Lerace (winner of the 2008 Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition).‘Nick Parnell is a complete and utter star. A brilliant and beautiful performer.’ - Emma Ayres, ABC Radio Classic FM Breakfast

‘Dazzling dexterity… balanced with supreme delicacy’ - The Advertiser.

Nick Parnell’s CD launch and Australian tour sees music’s greatest hits re-imagined by one of the world’s foremost vibraphone players. This stunning musician makes old music new again, injecting energy into repertoire that might be familiar to some, but defi nitely inspirational to all, as evidenced with his latest album release, Vibes Virtuoso.

“I am passionate about showing audiences what can really be done with a vibraphone. When played well, it has the most amazing and beautiful sound that transports audiences to a heavenly place. The vibes combined with piano accompaniment makes for a completely unique concert experience for the listener,” says Nick Parnell.

Favourites from an internationally classic music repertoire – such as Gershwin’s Summertime, Albeniz’s Tango, Ravel’s Alborada del Gracioso and Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba – have been cleverly re-imagined by Parnell to create a whole new, vibrant listening experience despite the familiarity of the melodies. Most importantly, the vibraphone superbly melded with piano gets its moment in the spotlight, ranging from the technically challenging to sheer lyrical beauty in the space of a heartbeat.

Born in the Australian outback, Nick Parnell started teaching himself drums in his parents’ sheep shearing shed at the age of ten. Such humble beginnings ignited a passion in Parnell that has led to industry acclaim, such as the Centenary of Federation Medal awarded by the Australian Government and appearances with the likes of David Helfgott, Simon Tedeschi and the Australian String Quartet.

As one of the fi rst musicians to bring the vibraphone to the attention of the classical world, Parnell’s ongoing ambition is to break down the elitism of classical music and make it available for everyone to enjoy – something he achieves with enviable mastery through Vibes Virtuoso.

Winner of the International Melbourne Percussion Competition (2001), Parnell is releasing his third album (previous 2 albums released in Europe in 2012) and is embarking on his seventh year of national touring following collaborations with pianist Simon Tedeschi and performances at the Australian High Commission in London.

Scone & Upper Hunter Horse Festival NewsBy Anne Davies (president)

The cocktail party of the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival to be held at the Scone Race Club will be an event not to be missed! This year Tricia Evy, a French Caribbean Jazz singer will be performing songs from the legends of the jazz world.Tricia was born in France but spent most of her childhood growing up on the French island of Guadeloupe where her passion for singing was ignited after listening to iconic French artist George Brassens and the legendary Guadeloupean, Patrick Saint Eloi.

After returning to France, Tricia focused on developing her talents as a jazz singer. The infl uences of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole can be heard in her singing. Tricia even does an amazing rendition of Louis Armstrong with his gravelly voice!

Tricia has worked extensively across Europe whilst also performing regularly in Australia. A simply stunning performer presenting a mix of jazz and sultry Caribbean sounds is an event not to be missed.

From Australian Idol to the ‘Biggest Street Party’By Rebecca Jenkins

With a monster raffl e, low-fl ying aerobatics display, street performers, a woodchopping competition, magicians and a massive array of wine, food and produce how could the Upper Hunter Wine and Food Affair possibly become any bigger? By throwing in an Australian Idol fi nalist, that’s how! This year on the 3 May at 10:30am, Ogilvie Street in Denman will resonate with the soulful, yet powerful voice of none other than Roshani Priddis, who most would remember as the sixth place fi nalist from the 2008 series of Australian Idol. Roshani is renowned as one of Australia’s fi nest vocalists. Accompanied by Steve McCauley on acoustic guitar, the duo adapts their performance to suit the mood of the audience without the aid of computerised backing tracks.

The Sri-Lankan born, Tamworth-raised songstress has been exercising her many musical talents (also including dancing and playing piano) since the age of ten years old.

Since coming sixth place on Australian Idol, Roshani has toured both nationally and internationally, both in the USA and Asia. She also toured as one of the three ‘Women of Soul’, along with Madame Parker and Casey Donovan. Roshani has performed the national anthem during the AFL Grand Final at Etihad Stadium infront of a whopping 60,000 soccer fanatics and has supported the likes of Christine Anu, The Black Sorrows and Daryl Braithwaite.

Proving that she is diverse in, not only her song choices, but her talents, Priddis has been involved in a few theatrical stage productions along the way including leads in Aida and Shout! - The Johnny O’Keefe Story. With talent such as hers, it’s no wonder that Roshani Priddis is the opening headlining act at the ‘Best Street Party’ in the Hunter this year!

See you at the ‘Great Nundle Dog Race’!

Every year more and more people are discovering the delight of a family day out that includes the dog.The Great Nundle Dog Race is where dogs and people excitedly gather in vast numbers for an amazing event. There are lots of laughs and fun at the expense of our canine friend, while he runs amok on the Nundle Recreation Ground with other likeminded pups from 10am to 3pm on Sunday 4th May.

House dogs and working dogs all come together with their humans in tow to take part in the many types of races and competitions on offer. It’s easy to enter; just buy your ticket before the race starts and let your dog do all the running.

Ask a friend to hold your pooch at the start while you speed up the other end of the fi eld to the fi nish line 100 metres away. The race starts when the fl ag is dropped then you call and whistle as loud as you can. Hopefully your dog will be his usual obedient self and run straight towards you, but most dogs are so excited to be running free that they completely forget they’re supposed to be in a race.

The Great Nundle Dog Race is the main fundraiser of the Nundle Public School Parents & Citizens Association and is held annually on the fi rst Sunday in May.

There are many types of races to enter from the House Dog Race to the Mongrel Invitation Stakes. Doggy High Jump, Stumpy’s Circular Dog Derby (named after a local Jack Russell) and don’t forget the very serious Great Nundle Dog Race for working dogs.

Kids’ entertainment, raffl e, barbeque and canteen operate all day as well as a coffee van and home- baked morning tea. There’s plenty of action on the fi eld including dog races for kids and adults, kids’ age races and sack races; no one is left out of the fun. Gold coin donation entry to the fi eld and free parking is available.

Enquiries: please visit www.nundle.com.au and go to the Great Nundle Dog Race page or phone Susi Bell on 0457 045 467.

New proposal for local cinema By Rebecca Jenkins

For over twenty years now, Muswellbrook has been crying out for its very own cinema. Many ideas and proposals have come and gone with none coming to fruition. Recently, yet another proposal has come to light, but this one shows promise and has the Muswellbrook Shire Council nodding with approval. For quite some time now, Muswellbrook movie-goers have had to travel to Tamworth or Singleton in order to enjoy the cinematic atmosphere. Survey after survey has been compiled on the subject and each survey indicated the immense desire to have Council make the building of a cinema (private or otherwise) in the local area a top priority.

The last proposal saw the Council purchase the Campbell’s Corner building in 2011 for the sole purpose of converting it into a cinema. They’ve had to consider other options however, since IGA decided to remain in the building’s street front. A very welcomed decision, but still not a solution to issue of a local cinema.

Following a recent agreement between the Muswellbrook District Workers Club (MDWC) and proponents Michael and Gina Rinkin, Council has shown great interest in a proposal which will see the renovation of the northern part of the MDWC into a twin cinema that will accommodate up to 250 patrons and will also have the capability to show new releases.

The Rinkins and the MDWC’s general manager, Scott Bailey have both expressed their satisfaction at the in-principal support shown by Muswellbrook Shire Council which will see them contributing fi nancially to the project. This will impact in many positive ways on the community. Not only will patrons no longer need to drive long distances to see a new release, but it’ll provide jobs and prove to be an attraction to the Muswellbrook area.

It hasn’t been indicated as to when the proposal will go ahead. It is, however, one of the more promising to come to light concerning the cinema and it has many theatre-goers crossing their fi ngers in hope.

Local riders share success at Sydney RoyalZone 7 Pony Club, covering the areas of Singleton, Denman, Muswellbrook, Scone, Wingen, Murrurundi, Cassillis, Merriwa and Aberdeen, was represented at the Sydney Royal Easter Show last week on the fi nal day of the two-week long agricultural extravaganza. The junior team of four riders under 13 was made up of Georgia Thrift (Denman PC), Matilda Magner (Denman PC), Darcy Pittman (Scone PC) and Katrina Gorman (Aberdeen PC). The girls were victorious fi nishing fi rst in a strong fi eld of competitors from across the state.

Coach Sue Foreman was delighted with the girls’ win and gave credit to the hard work and long hours training over the past four months carried out by the team.

“They are a great group of girls to train and they have been a delight to work with. There is a lot of long hours that goes into getting the team to this stage and the hours of training the girls put in has really paid off. Their ponies worked like clockwork and the girls had a lot of fun over the time they spent in Sydney as well as the months leading up to the show.”

Sue is no stranger to success at Sydney Royal having won with senior and junior teams on no less than 3 previous occasions. It was a special victory for Sue who also competed at Sydney Royal in the team of fours when she was younger and her daughter Georgia being also on the winning team.

As part of a program for pony club riders on the last day of the show, the team of four riders involves “troop drill” work where the team must work in single fi le, then as a half section and fi nally as a full section at the walk, trot and canter as directed by the judge. The team of four has its origins in the cavalry when riders had to demonstrate control and riding ability with their mounts by performing different manoeuvres in groups.

The girls paid tribute to their coach, parents and their ponies in their victory speech when interviewed on the big ring by Carol Heuchan.

With over 500 competitors and offering some of the largest cash prizes available (in excess of $20,000 in total) in a rodeo competition to date, the Scone Charity Rodeo still boasts the best riders, the best bucking stock and the best action-packed events that fans of the sport could possibly expect. Some of these include steer wrestling, team roping, ladies breakaway and barrel race and bull riding. The most popular in recent years being the saddle bronc and bareback events. All the Australian national champions of 2013 are expected to return and take part in the events.

But this year, the highlight of the rodeo is set to be the new feature event, ‘The Legends Vs Young Guns Roughstock Challenge’. Legends is indeed the term, because involved in these events are three bareback riders (including Chris ‘Hipshot’ Mead) that are not only national champions, but between them they have won a huge total of 17 national titles.

The entertainment doesn’t stop there. Following the Rodeo, spectators will be treated to a live performance by the Viper Creek Band, the second major feature of the event. The Novacastrian band has rapidly earned a big name for themselves, recently releasing their new album, ‘Kicking Up Dust’. They have also been announced to tour with McAlister Kemp in their upcoming ‘Harder to Tame’ tour and have been described as ‘an exciting stage act not to be missed’.

Another notable feature of the Scone Charity Rodeo is the quality of stock that originates from some of the biggest contractors in the country. These include names such as Gill Bros, Fitzsimmons Bros, Matt and Rachel Adams, Greg Gibson and Mitch Russell.

Most of the proceeds from the event are fi ltered directly back into the community. Committee president, Jade Smith says that funds are normally put towards helping the schools, scouts, football clubs and other notable clubs and organisations in the local area. One such fund being the Jamie Manning Fund, set up to aid the recovery of avid bull rider Jamie “Dodge” Manning after being recently involved in a devastating car accident.

It’s no wonder the event won the 2013 Australian Bushman’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association’s award for ‘Rodeo Committee of the Year’. Jade, who received the award last year on behalf of the committee, speaks very proudly of this, “It’s a privilege! It’s a privilege to be recognised for what we

do, to know we’re going in the right direction and doing things right.”

The Scone Charity Rodeo will be held on Saturday 10th of May at White Park, Scone.

First performance kicking off at noon followed by the main performance at 5pm.

Tickets prices: $15 for Adults, $8 for Children and $35 for Families (2 adults, 2 children).

Dynamic duo dominate country music By Rebecca Jenkins

McAlister Kemp is a talented and energetic duo that has literally become colossi of the country music industry in Australia. In less than four years, the pair has not only topped the ARIA charts (both country and mainstream) but they’ve also a Golden Guitar and nominations in both the ARIAs and the APRA awards for songwriting securely under their belts. If that’s not enough, they’ve even begun to receive international interest. During the recent USA Country Thunder Festival in which McAlister Kemp performed with big-leaguers Big and Rich, John Rich himself described the Aussie duo as, “...bad to the bone!” That, coming from one of the biggest global icons of country music is not only a phenomenal compliment but a massive indicator as to how talented and hard-edged McAlister Kemp really are.

When it comes to Drew McAlister and Troy Kemp’s national pride, there is a true sense of honesty at the core of it all. Both country raised - Drew was born in Narrabri and raised in Moree and Troy a born-and-bred Kempsey boy - they’ve grown up with an appreciation for the country and its people.

Their new album ‘Harder to Tame’ has been described as the ‘biggest, boldest and bravest’ album ever made by an Australian country music act. The tracks themselves show a true connectedness with the real issues of the Australian outback. The lyrics have at their centre a sense of true-blue-collar values, a trademark theme of the pair and what is believed to have earned them their enormously ever-growing fanbase. The album’s title track has already earned number-one status on the charts and been Golden Guitar nominated.

The duo speak very enthusiastically of their album, which was also produced by one if the most exciting and sort-after producers in Nashville.

“ ‘Harder to Tame’ launches with a new direction for MK.” says the pair, “This album is the album we always wanted to make with a collection of powerful songs recorded with hit-making producer Jeremy Stover in Nashville. It’s a new chapter in our career we can’t wait to take to our fans!”

McAlister Kemp has become one of the premier-touring acts in regional Australia and with their recent album receiving such high acclaim so early in its release; the tour is bound to be an experience not to be missed!

The ‘Harder to Tame’ tour is set to hit the Muswellbrook RSL Club on Friday 6 June. Doors open at 7:30pm and tickets are $30 for adults and can be purchased from the club.
