Rock CycleRock Cycle, is an endless process
through which rocks change form one kind to another kind of rock.
The rock cycle illustrates the role of various geological processes which act to transform one rock into another.
The igneous rocks are the prime most rocks which solidify from a molten mass magma
When these rocks are exposed on the surface of earth
These are disintegrated by the weathering agents into loose material.
This material is subjected to transportation by wind, water or glacier
After moving some distance , these loose sediments may again come to rest and get deposited in layers to form the sedimentary rocks through process of lithification
These igneous and sedimentary rocks may be subjected to a new environment of great heat and pressure , that change these rocks into a new type of rock i.e. metamorphic rock
The metamorphic rocks can be further subjected to over-powering, stress, heat and may be melted to form magma
The full cycle just described doesn’t always take place in the same manner but short cuts are also there
For Example:An igneous rock rather than being exposed
to weathering may be subjected to heat and pressure (metamorphism) and change to metamorphic rock.
On the other hand, metamorphic rocks and sedimentary rocks may be exposed to the surface and transformed into new raw material for sedimentary rock.
