The Association of

California State Employees with Disabilities (ACSED)

ACSED is pleased to share the information in this handout for jobseekers with disabilities who are interested in a career with the State of California.

The information is from state departments who partnered with ACSED as Champion Partners at the 2017 Training

Symposium. These departments elected to offer this disability outreach information as a benefit of their

partnership with ACSED.

We appreciate the efforts of these departments and encourage you to consider them in your job search. We also would like to remind you that countless other state

departments have job openings and are interested in finding qualified applicants, including those of persons

with disabilities.

Please cast a wide net and set your hopes high as you seek a career in state service.

The best to you in your search!

California Highway Patrol (CHP)

Address/Location(s): From the most northern to the most southern locations of California, the CHP has Divisions, Area Offices, Inspection Facilities, and Communication and Dispatch Centers throughout the state. The CHP Headquarters and Academy are both located in Sacramento, California.

Mission of the CHP: To provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security.

What makes the CHP a good place for a qualified person with a disability to work? The CHP is an equal opportunity employer and strives for a work environment free of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. With over 100 locations throughout the state of California, interested persons with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for positions within the CHP.

Several resources are extended to applicants and employees who have disabilities. It is the policy of the CHP to offer reasonable accommodation to all individuals throughout departmental examination and hiring stages. Another critical resource for persons with disabilities is the Limited Examination and Assistance Program (LEAP). This confidential hiring process was designed to provide an alternative method of assessing the qualifications and skills of applicants with disabilities. Although LEAP is offered by various state agencies, the CHP heavily utilizes this program because there are multiple classifications for which applicants can apply.

Additionally, the CHP’s Disability Advisory Committee (DAC), also known as the Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities, partners with the Office of the Commissioner and the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity to promote disability awareness to all departmental employees and the public, and encourages the hiring and promotion of persons with disabilities.

Number of full-time employees : As of December 2016, the CHP has 10,497 full-time employees.
