P ROBLEM DESCRI P TION
y In conventional engine control systems, two parallel
control loops are used to control speed and air fuel ratio.y But the working of one loop affects the other.y To address this problem a Robust Multivariable control
system is designed to control both engine speed and air
fuel ratio.y The engine input variables controlled by controller are
throttle position, fuel injection and spark advance.

CONCE P T OF ROBUST CONTROLLERy The disadvantages in the present controllers are that control
parameters are difficult to tune for good performance and theylack robustness.
y Robustness of a controller is its property maintain stability andensure performance even though the parameters of the systemvary.
y Robust Stability: The plant should preserve stability in the presence of various classes of uncertainties, load disturbancesand noises.
y Robust Performance: The plant should be capable of trackingall reference signals belonging to a class of signals withoutexcessive error, despite various uncertainties.

ENGINE IDENTIFICATIONy TVS Apache RTR 160 Fi is chosen as the ideal engine for
testing.y Engines with Fuel Injection provide better performance
than carburetor type engines.y This project mainly focuses on usage of sensors, actuators
and ECU to control the engine. So we choose a fuel
injection type engine for this work.

Electronic control unitDesigning an ECU using CompactRIOy N ational Instruments CompactRIO is a reconfigurable
embedded control and acquisition system.y Design a very flexible, programmable motor management
system using the CompactRIO programmable automationcontroller.
y The CompactRIO platform contains I/O modules and isexpandable for additional sensors and contains a field-
programmable gate array (FPGA). With the FPGA thesystem responds instantly and can be graphically
programmed using LabVIEW.
