XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Robert E. Howard's First Book Appearance(HOWARD, Robert E.). AISON, Gerta, editor. Modern American Poetry 1933.New York: The Galleon Press 1933. First edition. Lightwear to the foredge, about fine in a near fine dustwrapperwith a chip and a few short tears to the crown. A vanity-press poetry anthology containing two poems ("To AWoman" and "One Who Comes At Eventide") whichcomprise the ONLY book appearance by Howard duringhis short life. Reportedly Howard, the creator of Conanthe Barbarian whose only other lifetime publications weremagazine appearances (notably Weird Tales), responded toan advertisement from Galleon Press and submitted hispoetry. Upon learning that the Press planned to subsidizethe publication primarily through sales to its contributors,he withdrew his submission. Galleon, perhaps hoping hewould reconsider, expressed continued interest inpublishing his poetry and Howard granted permission. He committed suicide three years later at the age of 30,leaving behind many unfinished manuscripts – there wasno evidence that he had purchased any copies of thisbook. The posthumous publications, A Gent from BearCreek (1937) or Skull Face and Others (1946) are generallylisted as his first book appearances. Howard helped todefine and popularize sword and sorcery fantasy, and hisbold style and visceral characters have been much-reworked and imitated. His Conan stories becamepopular comic-books in the 1960s and the character waseventually filmed by John Milius (with Oliver Stone co-writing the script) as the first action film for ArnoldSchwarzenegger. An uncommon and little known book –rarely seen in jacket. #34000 ........................................ $600XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (HOWARD, Robert E.). Thrilling Mystery:June 1936.
