Widely regarded by those who moni-tor such things as one of the most gifted songwriters to ever ply the trade, he can sing “Eggs” and “Sing a Sad Song” back to back and mean ‘em both. While it is true he started off a honky tonk smartass, it quickly became evident that Robbie was a monster talent and some of the songs he’s written for his Blood-shot albums have been rightly elevated to the status of “classic.”

It is a damning condemnation of our world’s musical taste that he has not been elevated to the ranks of the multi-faceted giants of songwriting like Nick Lowe and Dave Alvin and Harlan

Howard. He damn well should be. Lost in the deserved accolades for being a fabulously unique, clever, and heartfelt writer is the fact that he’s also one of the best guitarists around. The chameleon-like tall guy can whip it out in honky-tonk, country, bluegrass, power pop, or whatever strikes his ample whimsy at the time.

He has also been more than gracious by playing on songs by Anna Fermin, Sally Timms, and Kelly Hogan.

This biography was provided by the artist or their rep-resentative.

Blues society General MeetinG scheduled for Monday, nov. 7th

Officer Candidates Needed! The Blues Society of Omaha has scheduled a General Meet-ing open to all current BSO Members on Monday, November 7, 2011 at Bailey’s Restaurant. Bailey’s is located at 1259 S. 120th Street, which is just south of Bronco’s on 120th & Pacific Street. The meeting will begin at 6pm and conclude at 8pm.

One major topic at the meeting will be the introduction of members that are interested in serving as officers in 2012 (and beyond).

Due to a combination of factors, several officer positions will be vacated at the first of the year. As many of you are aware, I am moving to Austin in early 2012, and intend to step down as President. Our current Vice-President, Mark Grubbs, is willing to serve as President, or remain as Vice-President, whichever best suits the needs of our society. Our Treasurer, Bill Martin, is also interested in serving as President. Bill has indicated he is ready to step down as Treasurer, but may continue if no other Treasurer candidates emerge.

If you are interested being considered for the position of President, Vice-President, or Treasurer of BSO, please attend this meeting and be prepared to present a brief his-tory of your involvement with BSO and/or Blues Music, and

your qualifications and vision for your desired position. (If you are willing to be considered for more than one position, please announce that at the meeting. No member will be asked to serve more than one position.)

As spelled out in the by-laws of the Blues Society of Omaha, Inc., officer positions are determined by a vote of the Board of Directors. It has recently been suggested that we expand the number of board members from the current five, in order to give the most active members a greater say in the future of BSO. As of this writing, the board has not had an opportu-nity to discuss that possible expansion. If the board decides to increase the number of board members, we will ask indi-viduals to announce their desire to serve on the board at this meeting as well.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of BSO for your support during my tenure as president. Omaha has a great Blues culture and it has been an honor to lead this great organization. I am confident our new leadership will con-tinue to keep BSO one of the most effective Blues Societies on the planet, and Omaha will remain a great Blues town.

Willie “Big eyes” smith

Original pioneers and contributors to Blues music continue to be reduced… I’d like to remind everyone that when these guys come to town, if you enjoy them, please go see them, their careers can not go on forever, sure some have had long and storied histories, while others leave well before their time but being at the gig shows them their work has really meant something to us over the years. This year already we have lost names like… Honeyboy Edwards, Pinetop Per-kins, Big Jack Johnson, Gary Moore, Robin Rogers, and it will grow by years end.

The pictures are of Willie “Big Eyes” Smith playing at Mur-phy’s brought in as always by Terry O’Halloran, 4-19-2007.

It’s flooding down on P Street (sounds like a song?) had to fight high water twice today on their way to the show, once on I-29 coming up from Kansas City and yet again trying to get in to the back alley at the Zoo Bar. A water main broke on the street in front of the Zoo and did considerable damage to both the Post and Wooden Nickel, and the hallowed basement of the Zoo Bar.

The show got some what of a late start because of the water issues, but when it got rollin it was a good-en! The Sch-nebelen family band has really come

a long way since winning the Inter-national Blues Challenge in 2008. The current tour is in support of their new effort “Wrong Side of the Blues” released this year.

Danielle on bass might have one of the most powerful female voices in Blues Music today, comparisons to Bonnie Raitt come quick but I liken her to Susan Tedeschi… there are those who dislike covers but I could listen to Dan-ielle sing “Midnight train to Georgia” and “Angel from Montgomery” every night of the week!

Brother Nick won most promising guitarist at the 2008 IBC, and it’s with damn good reason, he takes no prisoners and plays it like the WHOLE damn world IS watching… espe-cially like it when he accompanies himself on the kick drum and high hat while playing the “Dean Steel Dobro”

Brother Kris like most good drummers is the driving force and time keeper for the band… Strong young man that just pounds hell out the skins with a couple of extended but

tasteful solo’s while his siblings catch their breath between vocals, but Kris never left the stage area, just stopped for a quick set break, where merchandise sales motored right along, damn! No 4x-talls again!

Always enjoy the Trampled sibs, they were heading to Omaha the next night and I’m betting they kicked butt in big O as well!

The Todd Wolfe BandThursday, Oct. 13th • gator O’Malley’s-12143 West Center Road

The Todd Wolfe Band recall the days when “men were men and amps were amps,” real tubes crackling with a blues-adelic sound reminiscent of the best rock and roll bands of the ‘60s. This band jams and rocks, but their music is deeply soaked in blues. They have established themselves as one of top power trios by relentless international touring and spreading their legend from coast-to-coast and beyond.

“Todd Wolfe is one of the best guitarists I’ve ever played with.” – Sheryl Crow

“There are very few guitar players I like better than myself; Todd Wolfe is one of them!”- Leslie West of Mountain

“Todd Wolfe is like a phantom of rock and roll. He comes out of nowhere and the hex lasts for days.”- John Popper of Blues Traveler

“Their sound recalls bands like Gov’t Mule and Cream.” - Blues Revue Magazine

“Imagine some power trio mixed into a Texas blues foundation and overlaid with trippy psychedelia - that’s the essence of Wolfe’s music.”

-Hittin’ the Note

Popa Chubby Zoo Bar 6-22-11

I had never seen Popa Chubby before, I knew he was from the east coast and toured in Europe quite a bit. I didn’t quite know what to expect, I thought he would be more of a rocker than a bluesman, and was pleasantly surprised to hear he is a nice mix of both, and is an excellent craftsman on his guitar.

When I introduced myself before the show to ask permis-sion to annoy him with my flash pictures, I was prepared to

deal with some what of a gruff kinda guy, complete oppo-site! Chubby said “Take all ya want, and please share them with the Omaha Blues Society”… Perhaps Bo Diddley said it best, “Ya can’t judge a book by looking at the cover”

While on stage Popa was quite taken back by the enthusiasm of such an early show, and promised he would not wait the nearly 10 years to return as he did before tonight’s show.

Straight from their held over sellout shows at the Armada Room “The Self Righteous Brothers” close the party at this years 38th annual Zoo Bar Street Fest Saturday night.

Look up “High Energy” in Webster’s unabridged you’re quite likely to see a picture of The “SRB” band… That’s what ya get when you mix world

class musicians with a couple of crazy bastards in matching maroon suede smoking jackets!

The final show of the Zoo’s 38th anniversary week had people packed from the front of the stage, to smack dab against the ID station on “O” street. SRB played the street fest a couple years ago and returned with another fast pace show that left me wondering if Paramedics were back stage with de-formulators’ pre set to the highest wattage available. Wonderfully entertaining show on a sweltering

night at 14th & P.

Self Righteous Brothers are, Brian Johnson & Mike Keeling vocals, Dave Robel drums, Basil Mcjagger on keyboards, Bennie Kush-ner on guitar, Bass player was damned good (unfor-tunately remain nameless to me? someone help me here)

Thanks to Pete Watters and Jeff Boehmer for another year of anniversary memories… The Zoo does a swell job of mixing national talent whose names bring in the casual live music fans to the festival, to spotlighting the local musicians whose hard work is the backbone of Lincoln ’s live music scene for the other 360 days of the year.

See Y’all at the 39th.

“Live and local, if ya like it, ya gotta live it, or you’ll lose it!”

The dates for the 2012 International Blues Challenge (IBC) will be January 31 - February 4, 2012. The competition will be held in Memphis, TN in the Beale Street entertainment district.

Hotel information will be posted on the IBC page September 1. Tickets will be available on October 1. We will continue with two packages, the Baby Blue and the Big Blue passes. The Baby Blue pass will grant access to all the Showcase and Competition venues. The Big Blue will add Keynote luncheon and the “Keeping the Blues Alive” award presentations. Both events include a meal. Acts will be issued a pass equal to the Baby Blue pass.

IBC will begin with the FedEx International Showcase (Jan 31). The Challenge has been expanded to a four day format. Wednesday and Thursday night we will hold the quarter finals (Feb 1-2), Semi finals will be held Friday night (Feb 3) and concluding with finals in the Orpheum Theater (Feb 4).

During the hours of 6am and 11pm minors are allowed within the historic district, without being accompanied by a parent or guardian. Minors are not allowed to enter the Beale Street Historic District after 11pm unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, or going to a destination point like the New Daisy Theatre.

Act registration will begin in a couple weeks; watch your (public) email account. I will notify each affiliate that the codes have been sent. This is what your acts will need: 300 dpi photo, 600 character bio (with out counting the spaces) and contact information for both the act and the affiliate. Have your acts read and study the rules page located at http://www.blues.org/#ref=ibc_rules. More information will follow.

Keeping the Blues Alive Awards nominations must be in the office by September 30! If you need another form, please email me. Please take some time and make a couple submissions!

Best Self Produced CD competition submission deadline is November 1, 2011. All entries MUST be in the office by the deadline. BSPCD rules can be found at http://www.blues.org/#ref=ibc_selfcdrules.

Guitar Raffle tickets are located on our website at http://www.blues.org/#ref=about_promoimages . Each affiliate can sell 500 tickets. It is up to you to check the legality of raffles in you location. Please have the tickets in our office by January 14, 2012. PLEASE do not bring them to IBC and leave them with a volunteer, they have enough to keep up with!

Affiliates in Canada and the United States must conduct an open, judged live music competition. Affiliates in these two countries may not appoint an act. Youth Showcase acts CAN be appointed!!

It takes an army of volunteers to organize an event of this size. There is no better way to understand the complexities of the IBC than to work with our team of experienced volunteers. If you or your members are interested in volunteering please send me an email!

Sometimes we forget that we have new officers and new affiliates. If you have questions, please email me! I either have the answer or will direct you to an affiliate that is doing, has done or is about deal with the same issue!

Bottom line is: if you have IBC questions, want volunteer, need more information, email Joe Whitmer at [email protected].

I look forward to seeing all of you on Beale Street!

Joe WhitmerDeputy Director, The Blues Foundation

From Bruce Katz:

I’m coming to your area Wed/Thurs Oct. 19/20 at the Zoo and Gator O’Malley’s. Any mention would be cool. I have a new guitarist, Jimmy Bennett who also sings and plays Lap Steel and Telecaster guitars, so the focus of my band has changed somewhat and I’m really enjoying it.

I will have just come off of a Delbert McClinton mini-tour (including the King Biscuit blues fest) just before I go out with my band, after playing with Gregg Allman all year before that. I’m going to attach a jpg pic to this in case you can squeeze it into your column. Hope to see you at one of the shows!

Thanks Best, Bruce

Never at a loss for words or Licks, Walter Trout left the Guitar heads drooling for more at the end of his very spirited 90 minute show, no pedals, no whammy bar, no slide, no armory of guitars lying in wait with a tech to tune them, just one man, one yellow Fender guitar and a boat load of talent!

In a week at the Zoo Bar that had Walter, Lil Ed and Ana Popavic in the line up it was hard for some to pick one or the other… several I know caught them all, Walter Trout had a Good crowd on this night!

Book Review

I am sitting in my kitchen, nursing a tumbler of four roses bourbon, thinking about things, Bor-ders closed, my beloved Homers closing at 132nd and center and David “Honeyboy” Edwards died August 30th. It just goes to show us that we never know, cut down in the prime of his life, he was 96. One small tear rolls down my left cheek as we loose the last musical link to Robert Johnson. So this month please read his book, it is terrific. I picked it up at a used book store a few years ago and recently read it again, it is a wonderful story from his early days bummin with Big Joe Williams (until all Joe wanted to do was drink and fight) to his railroad hopping days and gambling ways when he had to cheat to eat. It is a magic piece of history that doesnt exist anymore, to his meeting and the subsequent death of Robert Johnson, Honeyboy tells a highly readable story on the delta and beyond. I can also strongly suggest the documentary called “Honeyboy” to be on your viewing list. Earlier this year I was ready to see him on tour with the Big Head Todd Blues Club but he pulled out because of health reasons. It was still a good show but I was really looking forward to being in the same room with a man that knew and played with Robert Johnson, but now that will never be, as I take another sip of four roses. I have been to Honeyboys hometown of Shaw, Mississippi and they have a small park for him and his blues trail marker is there. I have also stood on the spot in Green-wood, Mississippi where Honeyboy met Robert Johnson in 1937. Youtube has his final live performances which was this past April at the juke joint festival in Clarksdale, Mississippi

The World Don’t Owe Me NothingThe Life and Times of Delta Bluesman Honeyboy Edwards.

in front of Cathead Store. They are a little rough around the edges but Honeyboy was never con-sidered a smooth bluesman just real and honest to me. So please read the book and travel back in time ( I cant believe I said that) and allow me to cling to some of our musical past. I will never let it go. One more thing about the autobi-ography that I have I real-ized after having it for

over a year that it is autographed by Honey-boy. (pretty cool, huh). I may not be the most observant guy around! I see that my bourbon is done and I wonder “Who the hell is Next” Thanks to Borders, Homers and all the orig-inal Delta Bluesmen. For you singer-songwriter fans in the Americana vein please check out Sam Baker, you will be richly rewarded.
