ROB PARKER GOALKEEPING
BACK PASS EXERCISES
VOLUME 1
July, 2013
With sessions from:
Edward Gallagher @EdwardGKCoach Gerry Montague @gerry_montague Rob Parker @goaliecoach00
Welcome to this month’s booklet on backpasses. This area is an aspect that sometimes can be easily overlooked however, is becoming ever-increasingly important in goalkeeping. A goalkeeper’s footskills or the lack thereof can greatly impact the game. This month, instead of just getting sessions from me, I put out the word for sessions from other goalkeeper coaches on twitter and received some fantastic sessions that are shared here. A special thank you to Edward Gallagher and Gerry Montague for taking time out of their busy schedules to put together these exercises to share with you. If you like what you see, make sure you give them a follow. It is my hope that you find this booklet useful and the information enclosed will provide some ideas to assist your keepers in improving this vital area of goalkeeper development. Sincerely, Rob Parker @goaliecoach00

Goalkeeper Training Session: Improving Back Passes
Warm-Up:
Two teams of 8 (7 + GK) in a 30x44 yard area.
Goalkeeper for each team positioned along end lines. Each team has a ball and keeps possession with only their team. Players are limited to 2
touches.
VARIATIONS:
Require every 3rd or 4th ball must be played to the goalkeeper. First team to complete a pre-determined number of passes including back passes earns
a point for future progressions.
Progression 1 - No goals
Two teams of 8 (7 + GK) in a 30x44 yard area.
Goalkeeper for each team positioned along end lines. Teams score by playing the ball into the feet of the opponent's goalkeeper. Anything not into the GK's feet is not counted. Players are limited to 2 touches, goalkeepers are expected to play the full width
of the field, not stand centrally (i.e. in the middle of the goal)
All balls start from the coach.
VARIATIONS:
Require both teams to work through their goalkeeper before they can play forward.
Progression 2 - Two goals
Two teams of 8 (7 + GK) in a 48x44 yard area.
Goalkeeper for each team in goal. Teams score by going to goal but need to play through the goalkeeper to go
forward.
All balls out of play are restarted by the coach - can play balls to help create situations where back passes are an option.
Goalkeeper knows when to call for back pass Goalkeeper knows where to receive ball Distribution from the back is safe / low risk
Progression 3 - Game
Two teams of 8 (7 + GK) in a 48x44 yard area.
Goalkeeper for each team in goal. Goalkeeper knows when to call for back pass Goalkeeper knows where to receive ball Distribution from the back is safe / low risk
Goalkeeper Back Pass & Plyometrics Session
One goalkeeper starts, 2 are serving balls along with the coach. GK1 goes through the speed ladder and makes back pass to GK2 (pass A) As soon as GK1 makes pass, GK3 begins 1 or 2-foot hops over hurdles GK2 receives and plays to GK3 on 2nd touch (pass B). GK3 returns ball to coach. Once GK3 has ball, coach plays to GK2 (pass C) who strikes ball first time with right foot over the 2nd full goal trying to place it in one of the mini goals (pass D). After 6 repetitions, each goalkeeper rotates clockwise. Score one point for each ball which winds up in mini goal. To train left foot, all equipment is set up on opposite side of the training area.
