10.5 YEARS AGO, I walked the halls of a three year old high school on the brink of inaugurating its first class of graduates into the “real world”. On June 18th, 1999, me, and a handful of so called “prepared” high school seniors entered the decade before us with some uncertainty and some very big dreams.

Little did we know that ten years later our uncertainty would grow greater and our dreams would grow much bigger. As we came-of-age in the 2000’s, our vision for a safe nation vaporized and our goals for financial stability collapsed. Furthermore, what we set out to change, now presented more possibilities and methods on how it could be changed.

So what happened? What kinds of events redirected our focus? Why did we continue dreaming?

For starters, Y2K led us to believe the world was going to end. The suicide attacks on September 11th, 2001, taught us the true meaning of the word “terrorists”.

Year after year we found ourselves haunted by the aftermath of natural disasters like the Indian Ocean tsunami or hurricane Katrina.

Our search for “Weapons of Mass Destruction” made us aware of our nation’s blind spots and weaknesses.

The acceptance of same-sex marriages challenged our traditional beliefs. The rise of gasoline prices fueled conspiracies of our government’s “get rich quick” schemes with oil.

like Youtube, Vimeo, Hulu and Vevo capitalized on the viewing habits of audiences who migrated from traditional television sets to the web.

We beefed up our phones do just about everything—recording and listening to music, video, and audio while on-the-go became the norm. And if that wasn’t enough, viewing email as well as sending and viewing text messages also became a part of our daily smart phone functions. Phones were even given the ability to upload and browse content on the web.

We assigned a color or number to environmental or social causes. If you bought RED, you saved a life. If you bought GREEN, you saved a tree. If you donated to ONE, you allowed someone to go to school, get a vaccine, or eat better food.

A friend of mine once told me that you learn in your 20’s and earn in your 30’s. If there is any truth to that, I can’t wait to see what happens next. I don’t think anybody would disagree with me when I say that we lived through a remarkable decade.

I’m so glad God was in control!

The death of iconic celebrities like Johnny Cash, Steve Irwin, Rosa Parks, Patrick Swayze, Farrah Fawcett, Heath Ledger, and Michael Jackson reminded us that no man was invincible.

And finally, as we drew near the close of the decade, our global recession seemed to have no end in sight. Investments were lost and unemployment rates skyrocketed.

And yet, while our standards changed and our ideals crumbled, we failed forward in our quest to dream bigger and improve the quality of life for all.

Since 1999, we made technological advances in essentially every industry. Everyday objects and gadgets shifted towards miniaturization, high speed, and digitization--therefore forever changing the way by which we read magazines, listened to music, watched television, and touched our phones.

We populated the web with personal stories, opinions, commentary, research, and data, all via something we now call blogging. Within them we embedded videos, music, sound bites, etc., all in efforts to keep each other more informed.

We introduced social networking sites to connect us with the day-to-day happenings of our friends, family members, and people around us. We even shared resources, links, and references to make life more manageable.

We built portable media players that could store thousands of songs, videos, and audio files for our listening and viewing pleasure.

We created digital video recorders so we wouldn’t miss our favorite shows or live events. Sites

I lOVE HIRING friends to join me for Camp Yearbook each summer. One year I even hired my younger (almost twin) sister. Indoctrinating loved ones into this school of thought has been a very rewarding experience for me.

Over the last thirteen years, I’ve danced like a Backstreet Boy, dressed up as Beyonce, leaped onto tables in ape-like fashion, and have even impersonated Michael Jackson. Of course, these days I do more creative consulting than parade around the stage in silly costumes.

If there is one thing I’ve learned from all of this is that opportunities to get paid to act like a complete fool are to be taken advantage of.

My friend Justin Pardee put it this way, “Camp Yearbook is Heaven for geeks.”

He’s right! At camp, high school students from all over So Cal learn how to get their “nerd on”. Each summer we teach our students everything from layout design, theme packaging, copy writing to leadership and business mar-keting.

Our goals are always to educate and motivate campers to go back to their homes and have them meet with their staffs in hopes that they would create a remarkable history book for their student body.

And while teaching them all of the above has been very important, showing them how to have fun has been just as valuable. Our efforts have leaned on the side of model-

ing an attitude of “silly”. This year, when it finally came down for us to act like complete fools, me and two of my friends, Ryan Hinkle and Marcos Clark turned to “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” for our inspiration. I was the one in the blond wig. My guess is campers left with a true understanding of the word “silly”.

MJ AND I WANTED our wedding to honor Jesus Christ first, our fami-lies second, and our friends third. As we planned our celebration we made sure that every major detail declared our Christianity, our love for our family, and our love for our friends. We also made sure that we took our California wedding back to the house of worship---the church. Some of our musicians friends even contributed by playing and singing five of our favorite praise songs during the ceremony. Long time friend and Pastor, Jeremy McGarity officiated our ceremony. At a lot of weddings, immediate family members of the bride and groom are often ignored. For Mj and I it was important to include them in the proces-sional. It truly was a delight seeing all 28 of them walk down the aisle.

In keeping with our plan, we decided to have all of our close friends in the bridal party. Not because we wanted a large party, but because each of those friends truly represented a part of our lives.

As so it was, on August 28th, 2009, Maryjo Elizabeth Moore and I married.

NOT MANY PEOPlE KNOW this, but Mj and I were once honored with the title of “class president”. I was class president at Silverado High School; she was class president at Serrano High School. Ten years later we found ourselves planning our reunions the same year we were planning our wedding.

Boy, did life get busy!

And so the reunions happened. We reacquainted with old friends. Shared new stories. Told people about Jesus Christ. And inspired one another to live the lives we were meant to live. It was good to go back to school!

STARTING A NEW CHURCH in San Diego has been one of the most rewarding and difficult undertakings of my life. Some days I’m riding high on the fact that a few more people came to believe in Jesus because our church exist. And other times I’m beating myself up because a new attendee didn’t come back to our church the next week. Why do I wrestle with these thoughts? Well, I’m sure it’s because my focus is on eternity.

On February 7th, 2010, Seven San Diego Church celebrated a two year anniversary--this time with twice the people in two locations. Praise the Lord we have made it this far!
