Introduction• The methodology used for preparation of Road Condition is
called Road Way Condition Survey.• A condition survey is the process of collecting data to
determine the structural integrity, distresses, skid resistance, and overall riding quality of the pavement.• It is necessary to know the condition of the road every year
for doing proper maintenance works.• Accordingly road condition surveys is done to find out the
condition, and should be done every year at a particular time.
6
OBJECTIVES
GEOMETRIC CONDITION • Determining the geometric layout of the roadway and point
out any drawbacks of the following general protocol.• Geometric layout intersections • Scientifically study and observe pavement surface
condition
7
OBJECTIVES
OPERATING CONDITION • Location and width of side roads • Road side land-use pattern • Loss of road width • Pedestrian crossing facilities • Locations and type of control devices • Layout of street lighting system
8
PURPOSE OF ROADWAY CONDITION SURVEY
• To assess the historical record of pavement performance & maintenance• To justify warrant of traffic• Effectiveness of introduced scheme & so on.
9
SURVEY METHOD
MANUAL METHOD• Walking survey• Windshield survey• Walking and windshield survey AUTOMATIC METHOD• Video camera• Distance measuring instrument• GIS method• Automated road analyzer
10
MANUAL METHOD
WALKING SURVEY• Systematic observations made on foot• Done by a walks down the side of the pavement.• Provides the most correct data.• Time consuming
11
WINDSHIELD SURVEY• Systematic observation made from a moving vehicle. • Useful when particular section of road segment is
observed. • Time saving.
12
WALKING AND WINDSHIELD SURVEY
• Better method than the single application• Achieve maximum pavement data and complete
pavement surveys. • Require both technological and human activity.
13
AUTOMATIC METHOD
VIDEO CAMERA• Observe service condition. • Attached on the post in the street. • Doesn’t work at night.
14
DISTANCE MEASURING INSTRUMENT
• Electronic instruments that precisely measure distances ranging from 10s of feet to thousands of miles.• They are easy to install.
15
GIS METHOD• A geographic information system (or GIS) is a system
designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present spatial or geographic data.
16
AUTOMATED ROAD ANALYZER
• Technically complex vehicle. • Have sensor machine attached. • Take photo as well as distance.

PANTHAPATH TO RUSSELL’S SQUARE ROAD
• From the previous table it is seen that the Roadway width is not Uniform…• Roadway width should be
uniform along the roadway because the drivers tend to overtake when they are passing through a smaller width to a larger width.• Thus in a result vehicle-
vehicle conflict may occur
21
INTERSECTIONS
Though the intersections of Russel Square & Panthapath were signalized, traffic is maintained by the traffic police due to obsoleteness of the signal.
22
MEDIANThe median condition of panthapath to Russel square is average Poor median condition
23
MEDIAN
Planned median width is about 14’ but we found the median width of our survey road is about 5.25’.
24
CHANNELS
Both intersections are channelized
Channels
There are also have Refused island for Pedestrian
Channels
25
POOR CONDITION OF MEDIAN & ISLAND
• The channels near the Panthapath and Russell square intersection are not in very good shape. They’re heavily subjected to edge damage.• The main purpose of the
refused island is not be properly gained due to these obstacles.• Immediate measures should
be taken.
26
OPERATING CONDITION : TRAFFIC SIGNAL
Secondary Signal
Primary Signal
Tertiary Signal
Panthapath & Russel Square junctions are signalized junction but traffic is controlled by Traffic Police
27
STREET LIGHTING
In Panthapath to Russel Square the street lights condition are not well managed.
28
TRAFFIC FLOW PATTERN
•Traffic at Panthapath intersection is controlled with 4 phase where left turn is always free for each phase
29
TRAFFIC FLOW PATTERN
Traffic at Russel Square intersection is controlled with 3 phase
30
IRREGULAR TRAFFIC FLOW
Sometimes large number of traffic or irregular traffic is problematic for the traffic police to handle. This may lead to disruption of the traffic flow.To remedy this through traffic study should be conducted and traffic signals should be redesigned to meet the current needs. Strict law regarding following traffic signals should be created and its proper implementation needs to be ensured.
Congestion due to disobeying traffic signal
31
OBSTRUCTED SIGNAL, SIGN & MARKINGS
• Signals are obstructed by trees near Russell square.
• Signs & markings are used for the traffic safety. Obstructed & damaged traffic signs and markings represent the poor condition of roadway.
32
BLOCKED FOOTPATHS
Construction materials on footpath
Pedestrians have to walk on roadway due to the placement of dustbin on the footpath
33
BLOCKED FOOTPATHSFootpaths are mainly used for the pedestrian movement. Due to these type of blockage they have to use the main road. This sows down the traffic stream and sometimes may lead to catastrophic accidents.
34
SIDE FRICTION( SIDE ROAD)
Side Road (Entry) Bottleneck due to Entry
35
SIDE FRICTION
Density of side friction mainly depends on pedestrian crossing, Dustbin, Bus stop illegal Parking On Road side etc.Temporary bottleneck may create due these type of ObstructionEffective Width of the Roadway is also decreased
36
ROAD OBSTRUCTIONS
Obstructions like elevated or depressed Manhole, Broken manhole, polished Aggregate etc. greatly affect the smooth traffic flow
37
OBSERVATIONS OF ROAD SURFACE
• Road Surface condition of Panthapath to Russel Square is not in very good Condition• Raveling, Pot holes &
Alligator Crack are Observed in many locations
38
LOSS OF WIDTH DUE TO SIDE FRICTIONS
• Parking• Trash disposal/Dustbin• Side Market • Pedestrian Crossing• CNG & Taxi Cab Parking• Roadside Cutting• Wide Branches of tree
Wide branches of trees & poor surface condition
39
ILLEGAL PARKING
• Sometimes vehicles are Parked illegally ignoring the traffic Signs • Reduction Effective Width of the Roadway, Temporary Bottleneck, side friction occurs
40
ILLEGAL CROSSING
Rickshaw and vans ignoring bollards and crossing road
illegally
41
PEDESTRIAN CROSSING FACILITY
1.Opening on Median 2.Opening on refused island3.Zebra crossing
42
Sometimes people do not follow the
marking&
Sometimes drivers do not follow the traffic
markings
43
RECOMMENDATIONS
• The surface of roadway was not good enough and the medians were not geometrically right. The marks on the road were invisible. So our recommendation is that we should be careful about regular maintenance of road.
• Lighting is very important in night time Driving. We observed the bad Condition of Street Lights. Regular Observations & maintenance Should be done.
• The signs & markings we observed on the roadway were old and covered by posters & also broken. So replacing these old sign plates with new ones is highly recommended.
44
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Obstruction in footpaths and refuge was a very major observation. The space allotted for footpaths and refuge have been taken over by small shops, construction materials, obstacles such as goods display of adjacent shops, etc.• So it is recommended that Dhaka City Corporation should
take essential step to clear the footpath so that pedestrian can move easily• Presence of lot of side roads is another problem for this
road as they always interrupted the main flow of the road.
45
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Recommendation for Road Side Land use pattern:• 1.it was a densely developed area for commercial
establishments, residential buildings, Hospitals etc.• 2.The main Purpose of the Panthapath link road was to
distribute Traffic among the primary roads.• That’s why service/frontal road may be provided for the
local traffic to reduce the traffic volume in this link road.• Bus lay-by & Use of Public Transport is also recommended
46
RECOMMENDATIONS
• U-tern & Side Road Entry or Exit, Illegal Parking should be restricted to Reduce Bottleneck• Good Pedestrian Facilities should be provided like facilities
for Blind people.• Strict usage of activity laws must be ensured. • Increase the measure of fine to constrain individuals to
tolerate the law • •Increase the quantity of authorities accountable for
activity control operation
