Better maintained thermal performance andlower Junction Temperature equals longer lifeand higher delivered lumen output for the LED

Electrical current that is not converted into light at the semi-conductor junction turns into heat and results in increasingtemperatures that reduce lumen output and LED life.Junction temperature is affected by the ambient temperaturesurrounding the LEDs, the thermal path junction through theheat sink, air flow through the unit and the outside ambienttemperature.

LEDgend luminaires incorporate intricate heat sinkingtechnology to provide air convection and conduction thatkeeps the LEDs and the driver cool to ensure longer life, higher delivered lumens and color consistency. An internalperforated cover prevents debris accumulation and facilitatesflow-through ventilation to keep components cool.

Holophane LEDgend luminaires are designed for a minimum80,000 hours of maintenance–free operation in a 40Cambient attaining 70 percent of the initial lumen output(350mA only). Longer life is attained when the fixturesoperate at lower ambient temperatures of 15°C to 25°C.

Thermal “venturi effect” optimizes heat transfer

Thermal Choke Points suspend the inner housingaway from the outer solar cover. This facilitatesoptimal airflow and minimizes the negativeimpact generated from intense sunlight.

Stainless Steel Protective Grill keeps cooling fins clear ofdebris and airflow at maximum. Any weather elements orsmall particulate matter passing through the protective grillonly come to rest on the back of a passive aluminum shelfbetween the six sealed LED arrays in the inner housing.

Six High-performance LEDArrays are protected by asystem consisting of anouter solar cover, glassrefractor lenses andpremium gasket seals.

Precise Optical Control

The fixtures’ prismatic glass refractor lens offers permanenceand ensures long-term performance with very low dirtdepreciation, resulting in more light within the intendedspace. A sealed optical system provides an IP66 ingress ratingagainst water and dust and extends component life. Glassoptics, a legendary core value to the Holophane brand, neveryellow, haze, scratch, or discolor and will not become brittleover time.

LEDgend luminaire optics are designed to maximize polespacing and reduce energy usage resulting in a lower totalcost of ownership.

The LEDgend’s highly engineered light engine is designed torestrict the direct view of individual LED’s. The result is aluminaire that appears “wholly luminous” without theunsightly view of individual LED points of light, increasingvisual comfort within the field of view.

System Comparison:

Application EfficacyA major benefit of the LEDgend luminaire isdirecting the distribution precisely on task. Thebenefit to the customer is that poles may bespaced further apart, improving visibility, minimizing light trespass, improving visualcomfort, with less consumed wattage ascompared to traditional sources andcompetitive LED products.

A major component to evaluating LED sourcedluminaires is applied lumens. This is a metricthat defines how well a luminaire distributesthe lighting in the intended space whilemeeting the uniformity and veiling luminance(glare) requirements per industry standards forroadway lighting.

The example on the right illustrates appliedlumens comparing an existing HPS cobraheadand competing LED roadway luminaire to theLEDgend luminaire.

Application: Three lanes each directionwith thirty five foot poles mounted instaggered configuration with luminaireplaced at edge of pavement. Thissimulation is a replacement of existing150 HPS luminaires originally designed tomeet 1 footcandle maintained with a 3.0:1Avg/Min uniformity ratio.

Surge Protection Most electronic ballasts or drivers cannot survive long-term outdoor transient levels without added surge protection. State of the art Holophane-designedsurge protection extends LEDgend luminaire life byprotecting electronic devices from electrical disturbances, including nearby lightning strikes. This protectionextends to all downstream electronics including LEDdrivers, photo controls, and relays. Instead of replacingan expensive light engine or driver, all that may beneeded is a replacement surge device. As a result,LEDgend luminaires offer a higher level of protection and a more economical replacement solution if andwhen mother nature strikes.

Dual Driver A major benefit of LED technology is long life. Thebenefit to our customers is reduced maintenance costs. The optional dual driver system available with LEDgendluminaires increases driver life to approximately 200,000hours (350mA only). The dual driver system incorporatesan electronic transfer switch that senses current on themain driver and will switch to the auxiliary driver when afailure occurs. The auxiliary driver does not energize untilthe main driver fails and includes a built in time delaythat eliminates nuisance switching due to powerfluctuations. Luminaires incorporating the dual driversystem eliminate a trip to the field to replace a faileddriver, which reduces travel and labor expenses. Fewerinventoried replacement parts and less equipment rental and labor coordination translate into significantmaintenance savings that free capital for today’s morepressing city service demands.

Dimming Capabilities Bi-Level DimmingMany municipalities are looking for the ability to reduce their energyloads even further by dimming luminaires during off-peak hours. The LEDgend luminaire is available with an integral control system thatautomatically reduces power. Light output is set at 100% until themidpoint of the night, then reduces to 50% light output for up to fivehours. Since LED’s deliver more efficacy (lpw) when driven at lowerpower, this translates to an energy savings of up to 55% during thedimmed state. The integrated intelligence of the control device dailymonitors on/off cycles and adjusts for current sunset/ sunrise time sothat the luminaire is always synchronized with the environment. And allof this without the need for an expensive external control system...Perfect for seamlessly enabling this great energy reduction on existinginstallations.

Intelligent lighting systems utilizing Acuity Brands ROAM® technology provide systemmonitoring, control and dimming interface capability. Holophane LEDgend luminairesincorporate this type of intelligence and offer various alternatives to meet specificdimming needs. For more information on ROAM controls visit www.roamcontrols.com

Constant Lumen OutputAnother innovative option available with the LEDgend is constant lumenoutput (CLO). This option provides constant lumen output for the entirelife of the luminaire. The embedded intelligence compensates for thenatural lumen depreciation of the LED. Since most street lighting isdesigned to maintain a specific level of lighting, this avoids the traditionalwaste of light and energy that would normally occur for any lightinginstallation. The luminaire is initially driven at roughly 60% of power, andthen power is gradually increased as the system ages. Over the lifetimeof the installation, this can provide a 15% overall energy savings. Thisallows LEDgend to add a whole new level of incremental energy savingswhile ensuring that light levels are maintained for the entire life of theinstallation. And most importantly, it accelerates the early years of energysavings so critical to ensuring a good economic payback.
