The Next LevelWhat Exactly is ‘The Next Level’? It’s a mythical place mentioned in nearly every signing story: A young athlete signs a letter of intent to play his or her chosen sport at a college or university, and he or she is said to be moving on to “The Next Level.” Where is that place? And what exactly is it? Naturally, those sports stars dream of plying their athletic wares as profes-sionals. Who wouldn’t want to get paid to play something they love? However, the truth is reaching any pinnacle in athletics is a process requiring baby steps. Some might have the good fortune to sign with a major university, but those particular athletes are few and far between. Then there are those who choose to go the junior college route. Ange-lina College has been a prime launching pad for players looking to improve both athleti-cally and academically in order to get a shot at yet another “Next Level.” Adrick McKinney was a big kid with plenty of size and raw talent when head coach Todd Neighbors watched him play at Trimble Tech High School in Fort Worth, Texas. McKinney signed with AC and spent his first year learning how tough the competition can be inside Region XIV. More than anything, he learned what it would take for him to move up another notch. McKinney worked with Neighbors throughout the off season, developing his strength, agility and footwork to the point he was nearly unrecognizable when the next season started. McKinney was one of the more dominant players in the conference that season, leading to his signing with Texas Christian Uni-versity, from where McKinney graduated in May. Lamont Mack was another who, under Neighbors’ tutelage, developed into a better player in his two years at AC. After signing and competing with the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Mack found himself playing professionally overseas – just like his AC teammate, Jonas Brown, who went from his stint with the Roadrunners to the University of Louisiana-Monroe to a spot on a professional roster overseas. The list goes on and on, a chronicle of success stories featuring Roadrunners who parlayed their abilities and academic successes into college degrees and, in some cases, professional contracts. Not all those players would have had the opportunity for a university education had they not developed as Roadrunners. Angelina College is proving, year after year, that there’s always a “Next Level”, and it doesn’t stop when one hangs up the sneakers for good. By preparing student athletes for life on the court and off, the Roadrunner basketball program is testament to the college’s motto, “It’s a Great Place to Start.”

Coaches & Staff
Head Coach Kyle Manary enters his first year at the helm of the Roadrunner bas-ketball team, having returned home to his East Texas roots. Raised in Livingston, Texas, Manary attended Angelina Col-lege basketball games as a kid and still recalls the “Runnin’ and Gunnin’” style of those Guy Davis-led teams. Manary went on to attend Stephen F. Austin Uni-versity.Manary arrives at AC with a wealth of experience at every level of basketball. Known as a “guru” of player develop-ment, Manary over the past 10 years has worked with more than 120 NBA players, hundreds of high-level Division I play-ers, and several High School All-Amer-ican stars. He has served as director or lead instructor at all of the Nike Brand Skills Academies featuring such NBA stars Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis, LeBron James, Vince Carter, Amare Stoudemire, and Paul Pierce. In addition, Manary has been the Director of the Jordan Brand Inter-national Tour Defensive and Competition segments the past several years.
Manary has also served as the Head Coach of the International Team at the Jordan Brand Classic held in the NBA Charlotte Bobcats arena and the NBA Brooklyn Nets Barclay’s Center; Manary led his team to three victories in this pres-tigious world game. Over the past seven years, he has been the Director of the Chris Paul Elite Guard Camp, working with Chris Paul, Stephen Curry, Harrison Barnes, Will Barton, Isaiah Thomas, CJ McCollum, Ray McCallen, several other NBA players and the next crop of NBA players. Coach Manary also directs the Wesley Mathews Elite Camp from the Dallas Mavericks.
Coach Manary’s travels have put him around some of the best basketball minds in the game. After surviving a brain tumor that ended his playing career, Manary got
his coaching start as a student assistant at nearby SFA under Ned Fowler. Three years later, Manary was promoted to the duties of Third Assistant Basketball Coach at SFA under Derek Allister. One year later, Manary received his introduc-tion to junior-college basketball, serving as an assistant coach under Blake Brown at Frank Phillips College. Manary’s work there led to offers from several Division I programs; he chose to continue his career at Saint Mary’s College of California, working with Dave Bollwinkel – now the Senior Talent Scout for the Chicago Bulls. At Saint Mary’s, gained exposure to the professional ranks, eventually taking a position in basketball operations with the Dallas Mavericks thanks to then-team president Donnie Nelson. With the Mav-ericks Coach Manary wore several hats, from scouting talent in Europe and col-lege, to holding clinics all over the world, to player development. Coach Manary credits his time learning from Hall of Famer Don Nelson, Dell Harris, Sidney Moncrieff, Charlie Parker, and others as to his passion and creativity for the NBA.
Manary’s next stop led him to working with player-development legend John Lu-cas, with whom Manary spent the next several years doing all of the player de-velopment for a long list of NBA players.
In 2012, Manary became the head coach at Episcopal High School in Houston, a struggling program before his arrival. In his first season, Manary led the team to a 30-4 record and a third-place finish in the state tournament. Manary left the high school ranks having won nearly 90 per-cent of his games.
Manary’s arrival at Angelina College brought praise from several big names in the professional ranks:
Jeff Van Gundy – Former New York Knick/Houston Rocket Head Coach
and current NBA broadcaster: “I have watched Kyle coach and he has enthusi-asm that is absolutely contagious, coupled with his outstanding technical knowledge and a hunger to succeed that leaves no doubt in my mind that Angelina College has found the right coach to lead them in the future.”Kevin Eastman – Former NBA World Champion Assistant Coach/Current President of the Los Angeles Clippers: “Angelina College has hired an outstand-ing basketball coach in Kyle Manary. He has a great passion for the game and for those he coaches. His combination of in-credible knowledge of the game and the relationships he has built with coaches and players from the NBA and through the High School ranks will surely put Angelina where they want to be. But the best thing of all is that he will do it all in a first class manner that will help ev-ery player that comes through there to be better for it.”

ASSISTANT COACH NICK WADEAssistant Coach Nick Wade is beginning his first season at Angelina College. Before arriving at AC, Coach Wade was an assistant coach at Conroe Oakridge High School from 2014-2016. Prior to that, he served as an assistant coach at McKinney Boyd High School and Lee College. During his three years at Lee College, the Runnin’ Rebels finished with the most wins in school history and won the Region XIV conference championship in 2013, eventually advancing to the national tournament’s Sweet 16.
Coach Wade played collegiate basketball at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. In his senior season, Wade led the team in three pointers made and three-point field goal percentage. In 2010, Austin College achieved its first 20-win season while winning the SCAC West Division Championship. In his coaching career, Coach Wade has coached more than 20 Division 1 athletes and three professional basketball players, two of which currently are in the NBA’s “D” League.
Coach Wade lives in Lufkin with his wife Allison.
Coach BiographyASSISTANT COACH ERIC COLBERTAssistant men’s basketball coach Eric Colbert is entering his first season with Ange-lina College. Coach Colbert arrives at AC after spending two seasons at Pratt Com-munity College, where he was part of two 20-plus win seasons and a berth in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
Prior to his time with Pratt Community College, Coach Colbert was the head assistant at Navarro College from 2008-2014. During Coach Colbert’s six seasons on the staff at Navarro, the Bulldogs won three Region XIV championships and one conference championship. In six seasons, the Bulldogs were 147-58 (.717 winning percentage), graduating 93 of their sophomores while placing nearly 30 student/athletes in Divi-sion 1 basketball.
Coach Colbert also was on the staff at the University of Nebraska from 2006-2008 as Director of Player Development for head coach Kenneth “Doc” Sadler. There, Coach Colbert was part of two 20-win seasons and a post-season run in the NIT tournament.
Coach Colbert is originally from Compton, California and prepped at Verbum Dei High School, where he was member of a CIF championship basketball team. After high school coach, Colbert played junior college basketball at Compton College and Division II powerhouse Humboldt State University, where he played for the legendary Tom Wood.
Coach Colbert is the son of Chester and Lee Etta Colbert and has one son, Brayden Sidney Colbert.
