Introduction

In India, about 1.4 lakh persons are killed in road crashes every year, while many more get injured and disabled for life. Youth in the age group of 15 to 24 years comprise 33% of the total fatalities. To curb, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has observed the Road Safety Week from 11th January, 2016 throughout the country to create awareness among general public to improve the safety on road and to give an opportunity to all stakeholders to contribute to the cause of road safety. The Government is taking active steps for the implementation of National Road Safety Policy by improving the engineering of roads, improving enforcement, improving emergency care and taking up awareness campaigns for citizens. During the week awareness about various causes of road accidents and measures to prevent them were highlighted by organizing various activities with School / college students, drivers and all other road users. Various stakeholders such as different departments of State Governments, Traffic Police, Vehicle manufacturers, Transporters’ Association, PSUs, and Corporate have participated in the events during the Road Safety Week. To supplement the efforts of the Ministry of India, Zeal Education Society has conducted ‘Road Safety Week’ from 11th - 16th January, 2016. Moreover this year we have completed 20 years of our presence in education sector and there wouldn't have been any better way to celebrate this long journey. We initiated this CSR activity of Road Safety Week with a great belief that not only social inclusiveness will be the corporate mantra for going ahead, but as a responsible member, we have always incorporated sensitivity towards social aspects in all our activities. Zeal aims to change the outlook of the young generation. It strives to increase environmental awareness and initiate improvement drives to help its students, staff and faculty members.

The main objectives of Zeal Education Society to drive this initiative are

To promote and initiate the road safety measures in the community, school, colleges, work places on roads

To decrease the number of road accidents and injury cases by applying the road safety measures

To encourage all the travellers to follow the traffic rules and wear helmets and wear the seat belts while driving

To make the people aware about the speed limit of the vehicles to prevent road accidents

To encourage all the citizens to donate blood which is needed at the time of road accidents

To reduce noise pollution and air pollution to a minimal level Discipline movement of traffic on the road

Press Conference - 8th January, 2016

Media Partners

Press conferences are an indispensable tool for getting media attention. They can be organized by campaigners to present issues related to the campaign to journalists. By inviting the press to special events, Zeal Education Society grabbed a good opportunity to present a news story in the most favorable light. And hence by gaining favorable media exposure, Zeal is able to gain greater brand recognition and authority in the market.

On the occasion of successful completion of 20 Years in Education Excellence, Zeal Education Society decided to walk shoulder to shoulder and assist government in their national level initiative towards road safety. The aim of this campaign is to emphasize and highlight students about the need of road safety by implementing various programs.

Before celebrating Road Safety Week, Zeal has scheduled press conference on 8th January, 2016 from 9.00 am to 11.00 am to create awareness about the massive road safety campaign.

Day 1: Training Programme - 11th January, 2016

Management of traffic is a science which deals with the road capacity and demand, and operations of a traffic flow management system, using proven strategy to optimize usage and efficiency. A well-organized traffic management system contributes to economic vitality of the city and region and support national development efforts towards improving connectivity and safe mobility for both people and goods.

Understanding the needs and making Road Safety Week more effective and successful, Zeal has organized the training programme to guide students about safety rules on 11th January, 2016 from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm. This training was conducted by Mr. Yogesh Bag, Assistant RTO in Zeal campus itself. During his guidance he has focused on following issues:

Day 2: Run for Safety Rally - 12th January, 2016

These were some of the eye-catching slogans during the "Run for Safety'' marathon rally organized by Zeal Institute along with Young Inspirators Network on Youth Day on 12th

January, 2016. The Zeal Education Society arranged a rally with the aim to spread road safety message for wearing safety helmet while riding motorcycle and follow the traffic rules while driving.

The rally started from Sarasbaug - Abhinav Chowk and culminated at Shaniwarwada via Bajirao Road. More than 400+ students and faculty member of Zeal Institute along with members of civil society and Media participated in the rally as road safety ambassadors for this noble cause. The participants reached out to the public and campaigned on road safety. During awareness rally of this campaign, the campaigners carried

placards highlighting the importance of road safety and fatal risks caused by vehicles. Besides variety of educational banners, safety posters, pocket guides and leaflets related to the road safety are distributed to the on road travelers. Students had penned these slogans out of concern for road safety as they see an alarming rise in road accidents. To be motivated about the road safety while travelling on road means having planned, well-organized and professional way traveling. People who travel in unprofessional way were requested to use road safety measures and follow traffic rules by giving them roses.

Day 3: Social Awareness Program at Traffic Signal - 13th Jan, 16

Zeal Education Society has organized Social Awareness Campaign at 50 measure traffic junctions in Pune City on a single day. The campaign was held on 13th January, 2016 at different traffic signals from 9.00 am to 11.00 am. The statistics of Pune City says that the number of fatalities in 2015 reduced by just one as compared to the previous year, down from 399 to 398. The number of people seriously injured in 2015 increased by one as compared to 2014, up from 618 to 619. Overall, the number of fatalities, serious and minor injury cases showed a reduction in 2015 as compared to 2014, down from 1,902 to 1,759. q The campaign initiated by Zeal Education Society aims to reduce the current statistics of road accidents in Pune city. This initiative created the awareness to wear helmets and seatbelts and also to ensure safe road crossing by insisting that pedestrians to follow rules. During this campaign students guided the civilians on importance of following the traffic signal and also focused on drunken driving as well as highlighted the risks associated with it. The campaign will also had short street plays on road safety and volunteers distributed pamphlets with details on road safety and its importance.

People who travel in unprofessional way were requested to use road safety

measures and follow traffic rules by giving them roses and chocolates. The

campaigners carried placards highlighting the importance of road safety

and fatal risks caused by vehicles. The variety of educational banners,

safety posters, pocket guides and leaflets related to the road safety are

distributed to the on road travelers.

Day 3: Road Safety Inaugural Function - 13 January ,2016

On the occasion of success-ful completion of 20 years in educational excellence, Zeal Education Society inaugu-rated Road Safety Week as a part of Social Responsibility to promote road safety awareness amongst the youth of the Pune City. The inaugural ceremony held at Zeal Narhe Campus on 13th January, 2016 between 10.30am to 12.30pm. Zeal Education Society celebrating Road Safety Week during 11th Jan 2016 to 17th Jan 2016 to promote road safety awareness amongst the youth of the Pune City. The aim of this campaign is to emphasize and highlight students about the need of Road Safety by implementing various Programs.

To give a big start to Zeal Road Safety Week 2016 it is Inaugurated by special personalities from Pune Government like Mr. Suresh Jagtap - Joint Commissioner PMC, Pune, Mr. Yogesh Baug, Assistant RTO Pune, Mr. Kesari - Assistant Commissinor, PMC, Pune, Mr. Garaad, Mr. Deshmukh and Mr. Vivek Gosavi. Also the presence of Mr. Jayesh S Katkar – Executive Director, Zeal Education Society, Dr. A N Gaikwad – Principal ZCOER, Dr. Sanjay Deokar – Director Placement and Admission and Prof. C N Kulkarni – Principal Zeal Polytechnic made the event more incredible. The program was splendidly anchored and introduced by Ms. Rucha A Deshpande and Prof. Chinmay Deshpande. Welcome Speech was given by Dr. Arun N Gaikwad, Principal, ZCOER, and Prof. C N Kulkarni appreciated the efforts taken by all the students and faculty members for this entire event.

Mr .Jayesh Katkar – Executive Director of Zeal Education Society has given promise to dignitaries present on the dais on behalf of all the students that they will follow all the traffic rules and to motivate

citizens about the road safety.

Mr. Suesh Jagtap – a Chief Guest given a message that smart city is the need of the hour and to make Pune city a smart city PMC is taking positive step’s. He also praised the initiative taken by the Zeal Education Society for Road safety Week.

Mr. Yogesh Baug has given an excellent and eye-opening presentation on road safety. He also emphasized on the traffic rules and regulations which are commonly neglected by citizens that caused major accidents. On the occasion of road safety week Zeal Education Society practically participated through 500 student volunteers and 50 faculty Coordinators who created awareness through sign boards and leaflets on the major signals of Pune City with the active support from Mr. Sarang Ahvad DCP Pune city traffic.

Day 4: Blood Donation Camp - 14th January, 2016

On occasion of Road Safety Week from 11-16 January 2016 at Narhe campus and to address the problem of scarcity of the blood in various hospitals and blood banks, to save the lives of road accident victims, a mega blood donation drive was organized on 14th Jan 2016 by Zeal Education Society.

According to the information presented on the occasion, only 50 percent of the country's blood requirement is fulfilled through such blood donation camps. Hence, there is a need to create awareness amongst our youth for active participation in such a noble cause.

In this activity the response was overwhelming by faculties, students and staff and they have volun-tarily donated blood. More than 1,057 bottles were collected on just 47 beds, probably the highest record of its kind.

This drive was executed in association with Akshay Blood Bank, one of the oldest blood banks in Pune. The donated blood will aid the victims of road accident. After blood donation

the samples were carefully sealed and transported away. Refreshments were provided to the students who were part of the camp and immense care taken by the members of Akshay Blood Bank, to meet the requirements of students after donating the blood, so as to avoid

any mishaps in the campus. Throughout the morning, there were smiles and laughter all around a true embodiment of what we believe in - selfless service with a smile. The donors received certificate of recognition. They also get a credit card where one unit of blood is available free from Govt. Blood Bank in next one year.

National Safety Council of India is a self-governing body (non profit and nongovern-mental organization for public service) which was established on 4th of March in 1966 under the Societies Act in Mumbai, having over 8000 members. It is a national movement carried out on annual basis to prevent and lessen the loss of life including various human being problems and their financial loss through availing them with safety, health and environment related support services. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm to make aware the people about how to get prevented from the industrial accidents by exhibiting widespread safety awareness programs in the public sectors which have not been covered by any safety legislation. During whole week campaign celebration, varieties of specific activities are displayed to the people as per the safety requirements. Keeping the same agenda on line, Zeal Education Society observed a number of activities that led to social awareness including Road Safety Awareness, Mega Blood Donation Camp, quiz competition, and distribution of 500 helmets. Students and other attendees asked multiple questions to Mr. Patil regarding various traffic rules and the consequence associated with non-following. He also gave many real-life examples.

Mr. Nifadkar is a very lively person and shared his personal experiences with audience. He started with his own NGO called Helmet Pune which spreads awareness about wearing helmets while driving.

He explained the importance of road safety and being aware of not only one’s safety but also of other people driving by your side and making them also follow the road safety rules

The session was more of an interactive one rather than normal routine lecture. The attendees asked lot of questions to them and they provided lot of information to clarify the doubts raised by students.

Zeal Education Society has

signed the MoU with VEGA Helmets and committed to buy 500 Helmets every year and distribute among the college students to increase awareness of road safety among today’s youth.

With this MoU, Zeal Education became an India’s first Institute to take such a initiative for their students.

Day 6: Quiz Competition - 16th January, 2016

Road traffic injuries are a major but neglected public health challenge that requires intensive efforts for effective and sustainable prevention. Road traffic systems are one of the most complex and dangerous systems with which people have to deal every day. To validate the inculcation of awareness of the road safety, we have scheduled Quiz Competition of road safety rules on 16 January 2016. The competition was aimed at develop-ing the knowledge about road safety measures and excel-lence base among the students through healthy and highly motivating meet. Students from different departments of the institute took part in the competition

and tried their level best to excel and clinch the top position. All the social drives initiatives were taken under the able guidance of

Shri. S.M Katkar, Founder Director, Zeal Education Society and executed effectively by Mr. Jayesh Katkar, Executive Director, Zeal Education Society. All the principal /Director, Staff and Student displayed tremendous enthusiasm in planning, coordinating and participating in all the activities to make this social drive a grand success.

Total 18 teams from Zeal Education Society had participated in the quiz competition and a team from Zeal Institute of Management and

Computer Application (ZIMCA) secured first position.

The objectives of the quiz competition on the occasion of Road Safety Week were as follows:

To raise and maintain the awareness of students about road safety issues

To assist road safety organisations and personnel in Scotland in maximising the potential for casualty reduction through education and publicity

Sensitize masses by raising awareness about road traffic injuries, their grave consequences and thus build community involvement around the issue of Road Safety

Epilogue

The Road Safety Week observance is an initiative at national level by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. With a view to supplement the efforts of the Ministry, we at Zeal Education Society had celebrated Road Safety week to contribute our bit in building safe society and nation at large.

In a road safety week from 11th – 16th January, 2016, Zeal Education Society conducted all related activities to generate road safety awareness among youth. During this road safety week many dignitaries from Pune Municipal Corporation, RTO and many Social activist from NGO given their valuable presence during all events of awareness programme. It was a pleasure meeting to them personally and had opportunity to bring all our consternations regarding road safety to their attention and to share and exchange our thoughts and experiences with them. We really appreciate their assistance to nurture our students to understand the importance of road safety.

To make this propitious event successful we present our gratitude towards our Hon’ble Sri S.M. Katkar, Founder Director, Zeal Education

Society, who has always taken a keen interest in the Social pursuits and has been pillar strength to our Campus. A Special gratitude towards Mr. Jayesh Katkar, Executive Director, Zeal Education Society, for extending all

support for making this social drive happen. We acknowledge the encouragement and the astute advice that he has given all through the run up to this event. Sincere thanks to all the Principals and Directors of various colleges in the campus,

for their unstinted support and invaluable ideas for organizing this event. And also to all the faculty members, admin staff and students of the campus for their hard work and effort in planning, coordinating, and most important participating and making this endeavor successful.

Travellers understand the importance of following traffic rules and regulations

The traffic on the road is moving in a disciplined way and with utmost safety

People understand the signs and traffic rules put up on the road

People are driving the vehicles at desired level of speed

Noise pollution and air pollu-tion is reduced to a minimal level
