Superior shoots a three pointer with Allen Iverson!Greetings from Harrisburg. This should be an exciting day for us. In December, our 5th grade class did a play called “The Miracle in Philadelphia”, which deals with the Constitutional Convention of 1787. This was a great play and we learned a great deal about our government and the signing of the Constitution. Before beginning this exciting day, we stopped for a quick breakfast. After driving Highway 78, our first stop on our journey was Independence hall to see where George Washington worked. We went to the Philadelphia Museum of fine art. to see all of the artwork people did. When we were done there we went to the Masonic Temple of Philadelphia. After that we decided to go to congressional hall to see the old U.S. Congress meeting hall. Wow you should have seen the Liberty Bell with us. It was so dirty that Raymond asked the workers if they ever clean it . The workers were impressed with that answer, that they let Raymond, Kelsey, Johanna, and Jeffrey clean it. That was a great experience. After our amazing trip to see the liberty bell we decided to go eat lunch at Denny’s on City Line Drive.

After lunch we decided to go to the constitution hall, where some of us dressed in our costumes from our play

and sat in the real constitutional hall. We than saw an opera show. After that we were a little hungry, so our teacher treated us all to a famous delicacy from Philadelphia, the Cheese steak. Boy that was delicious. After a long and tiring day, we decided to go to our hotel called the Latham Hotel. There we relaxed, swam in the pool, and played video games in the arcade until it was time for sleep. We need to get our sleep in preparation for another long day of fun and adventures. We’re getting closer and closer to St. Louis.

Noble on the Road to Utah!

Today is day four of our journey. We are in Utah, or as it is nicknamed the "Beehive State." This state was settled by Mormon pioneers, led by Brigham Young, in 1847. They were looking for a perfect place to settle

and practice their religious beliefs and they found the region of Utah where the Ute Indians lived. There is a statue of Brigham Young in the Capital, Salt Lake City. The Mormon pioneers called the state deseret, which is a word that means honeybee and it stands for hard work and industry. We got a bite at the Crackle Barrel Restaurant. It was good. We all had pancakes. Afterwards, we all bought sweet candy. Marcos and Michael ate 7 pancakes!

In Salt Lake City, there were many places to visit. We went to Bingham Canyon Copper Pit, an open-pit copper mine that is nearly half a mile deep and more than two miles across. We also visited the University of Utah and Westminster College. Then we saw the beautiful Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City's Temple Square. Some students were curious to see the Mormon Tabernacle, which is the home of the world famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

When the sun was out and warming up the day, we proceeded to the Great Salt Lake. It was cold but Jonathan and Oscar wanted to check if it was true that you could float easily because it is four to five times saltier than any ocean. It was true! The saltiness in the water makes you float, that is so interesting. Esmeralda, Erika, Noelia, Danilo and Chris decided to do some science experiments with the salty water.

We left Salt Lake City and traveled southbound towards Fillmore. On our way there, we saw the following cities: Midvale, Kearns American Fork, Provo, Pleasant Grove, Orem, Springville and Spanish Fork. We passed by the Wasatch Mountain Range. The Wasatch and Uinta range, on the northeast side, form an angle in the northeast corner of the state and are part of the Rocky Mountains. We finally got to see a part of the famous Rocky Mountain Range. The Utah Lake, near interstate 15, looked beautiful and we tried to persuade our teachers to stop but they told us we could not because we would stop in Fishlake National Forest, where we would have a chance to play and have fun. "This is like a dream come true", exclaimed Elnur. "Yeah, it's like the Magic School Bus! Added Thania. Fishlake National Forest is in South-central Utah. It is divided into four segments by intervening valleys. The forest covers 1, 434, 599 acres and it includes 76 streams and more than 60 lakes. That is huge! We hiked up the 1,100 miles long trail but of course we didn't go all the way. We had a

great BBQ. A few of the students decided to take a nap under the shades of the trees. The others went on to play all sorts of games.

Our last stop before reaching Saint George City was Zion National Park. What a breathtaking site! We saw the Great White Throne, which rises nearly half a mile from the canyon floor and you can clearly see the river erosion that happened many years ago.

Finally we got To Saint George, City. We had our dinner at the Sullivan's Rococo Steak House. We toured around the city and then we went to sleep. Good Night, we will see you tomorrow bright and early.

Lassen Takes Montgomery by Storm

Today we saw a lot of things between Georgia and Alabama. We stopped in Morrow, Georgia, just outside Atlanta. We visited the William H. Reynolds Memorial Nature Preserve. The ranger informed us about how a pond evolves to become a forest. While walking through the preserve, we saw Southern pine trees hardwoods also. While there, Jeremy saw a bird and tried to catch it. Then a turkey jumped out of a bush and chased Yesenia. Once it stopped chasing her it started chasing Hector, so Hector and Yesenia

jumped in the bus. The rest of us joined them and we headed for the capitol of Georgia, which is Atlanta. We visited the state capitol which was patterned after the national capitol. It was added to the National Historic Landmark in 1977, the Capitol is made of Indiana limestone and Georgia marble. Its dome rises more than 240 feet from the rotunda's floor and its exterior dome is covered in gold leaf mined in the northern regions of Georgia. Our next site to see was the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum. It has all sorts of things from when he was president. We stopped at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. The site includes the birthplace, church, and grave of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Our final stops in Atlanta were the global headquarters for CNN (we took the tour and it was fantastic) and the World of Coca-Cola Atlanta. We saw 1,200 artifacts from 1886 to the present and many interactive exhibits. The best part was tasting Coca-Cola products not available in the US. Some stuff tasted nasty, and we were glad it wasn’t available here, but some drinks were really good. Too bad we couldn’t get them here.

We made a lunch stop at West Point Lake just outside of La Grange, Georgia. 5. Actual impoundment of the lake began in October, 1974. The project provides water storage for

navigation on the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint Waterway, running 260 river miles from Apalachicola, Florida to Columbus, Georgia. The powerhouse's three generators produce enough power yearly to serve 24,000 homes. We crossed the state lines and visited Auburn, Alabama. Auburn University, founded in 1856 has Samford Hall, Langdon hall and University Chapel listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

We finally arrived at our destination for the night, Montgomery, Alabama. It has an interesting history. In February, 1861 Jefferson Davis was sworn in as the first president of the Confederate States of America right here in Montgomery. It was also the first capitol of the Confederacy. A few months later, the Confederacy capitol moved to Richmond, Virginia. The Alabama State Capitol was built in 1851 and resembles the U.S. Capitol. Across from the was the home of Jefferson Davis, built 1832-1835 and moved in the early 20th century to its current location. We saw war relics and furniture from the time period. We saw Maxwell Air Force Base. This is where the Wright Brothers’ Flight School had stood. Our last stop for the day was the Troy State University Montgomery Rosa Parks Library and Museum. The Rosa Parks Library and Museum is designed to build an understanding of the event that began the famous bus boycott. The Museum was constructed on the site of the old Empire

Theater where Mrs. Parks made her historic stand in 1955. There are six areas inside the museum that tell the story of the early civil rights movement. We saw a restored 1955 station wagon and a replica of the public bus on which Mrs. Parks was sitting that day.

We chose this route so we could see two state capitols and travel through as many southern states as possible before we arrive in Saint Louis.

BALBOA HITS THE BACKROADS

We started our morning in Mitchell, SD. We ate breakfast, then hit the road heading to Norfolk. In Norfolk we

visited the Elkhorn Valley Museum & Research Center to learn about the history of humans in Nebraska. We also went to the Norfolk Arts Center to learn about art. That was really cool.

On the way to Lincoln, NE the countryside was very peaceful and relaxing. We saw many farm animals grazing in the fields. It was really fun. We were in the car for three hours and forty-five minutes. When we arrived in Lincoln, we saw the Roller Skating National Museum because Adeel likes to roller skate. Cerina has a love for art, so we went to the Great Plains Art Collection. The museum featured many local artists working a many media. In the Museum of Nebraska History we learned a much about the local history. Kareena likes to study history. Sam loves animals, and zoos, so we also went to the Henry Doorly Zoo.

We shopped in the Historic Haymarket District where local venders sell produce, plants, and crafts. Haymarket was the first successful urban warehouse district as part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Not too far away, we rushed to see the Lincoln Children’s Museum, a fun place with many interactive and exploratory displays. A couple of us thought we were back in school with all the displays of sciences, mathematics, and the arts.

We also visited the capitol building and tried to see Nebraska’s governor, Mike Johanns, but he was unavailable.

At dinnertime, we went to the Star City Dinner Theatre because we wanted to see live theater and we were extremely hungry. After dinner, we went to the Hyde Observatory. We checked into our hotel rooms for the night and were ready for a good night’s sleep. We were really tired because of all the traveling and the wonderful fresh air. We really look forward to the next day. We chose this route because it was faster and it was way more peaceful than the interstate. The temperature was 67ºF, and it was partly cloudy and there is a little breeze.

Gledhill Takes off to Texas

This is an old gas station that we passed by, so Eunice took a picture of it.Later we stopped at Amarillo TX. We went to a museum called American Quarter Horse Museum. There we saw a lot of horses. It was a blast!! People all over Texas love to go there. Horses are very important in the Texan history.

Susana took this Picture of a horse.Later that day we went to the International Helium Centennial Time Columns Monument. This monument represents the discovery of helium in 1868. This was a 60-foot stainless steel monument. Then we went to Firewater Water Park. The next stop is Wichita Falls TX to Lake Arrowhead State Park. We had a picnic near the lake. We dared Mrs. Moore to water ski and she did. After eating, we went horseback riding and watched the beautiful sunset. We finally got to our destination, Decatur, Texas. In Decatur we went to Decatur Baptist College-One of America’s historic places in Texas. The president of the college gave us a tour of the school. It was enormous!!! Then we checked in to The Best Western Inn of Decatur for a nice hot bath and a good night sleep. We chose this route so we could go to Lake Arrowhead and go to the Quarter Horse Museum

Beckford Sees Shakespearean Festival

We started today in Henderson, Nevada. We drove I-15 North to Zion National Park. It was 63 and fair. There, we hiked on their huge rock formations, canyons and one of the world’s largest freestanding arches. Desert terrain and huge, sculpted rock formations co-exist with hanging gardens. It was awesome! While we were hiking, Jeffrey U. saw a skunk and he started messing around with it. It came closer and closer, and suddenly, IT SPRAYED HIM! Right then, we left Zion immediately, and went to the facilities to wash Jeffrey up.

We took I-15 north to Cedar City. It was 47 and mostly cloudy. There, we had a picnic at the world famous Utah Shakespearean Festival at Southern Utah University. We saw “The Winter’s Tale” at a replica of the open air Globe Theatre.

On to Beaver, Utah, where we saw the U.S. flag that flew on the USS Utah, which sank at Pearl Harbor. Catherine’s grandpa was stationed at Pearl Harbor and has told her many stories about that day. Seeing the flag made it seem more real for her.

We decided to head north to Fillmore, where the weather was 52F. We visited the Territorial Statehouse State Park. The Park was the site of Utah’s first territorial government headquarters. They had a large grassy

area so we played tag on the grass and talked about the Road Rally and what the other schools were doing. We stopped for gas and went to the bathroom.

Then we headed north on the I-15 freeway and went to American Fork, Utah. It is at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains, near 11,750 feet high Mount Timpanogos. We took a boat ride at the Utah Lake State Recreation Area. We had the time of our lives. It was a great experience and we learned a lot from the trip, but we were exhausted. Our car included Nairi S., Catherine S., and Jeffrey U. Everyone

Dearborn Goes Wild In Wyoming

Morning comes early when you stay at a dude ranch. We got up as the sun rose at 5:45 am. After having breakfast with our cowboy friends, we donned our cowboy hats, and continued with our western adventure heading east toward St. Louis. We headed out of the state of Utah and into the “Cowboy State” of Wyoming.

Our first adventure in Wyoming was in discovering a ghost town in Green River. In the ghost town we saw many old buildings that were from 1860. We looked around for any ghosts of old westerners, but we didn’t find any.

Onward, on highway 80 E, we headed toward the town of Rock Springs. Rock Springs began in 1862 as a station along the Overland Stage route. Nearby, the

Red Desert stretches over 100 miles to the north. We made sure our cell phones were charged, our ice chests were full, and we had plenty of sun block as we ventured into the desert of moving sand dunes second in size only to the Saharah Desert.

Dusting ourselves off after playing in the desert, we continued along I-80 towards the town of Rawlins, Wyoming. Here in Rawlins, we discovered a museum which houses the remains of an outlaw named Big Nose George. Big Nose rode with the famous James brothers and robbed trains in the early 1800’s. One of the attempted robberies got messed up and everyone fled. The James brothers got away. After being hunted down, Big Nose George was caught. He was put on trial and found guilty. When in prison, he tried to get out and killed two of the prison guards. The men of the town took him nd hanged Big Nose George. A doctor got a hold of his body and skinned him and made shoes out of his skin! George’s head and bones were placed in a whiskey barrel and buried. In 1950, the barrel was found and Big Nose’s skull and the skin shoes were placed in the museum.

Traveling along the 220 highway out of Rawlins northward, we encountered some of the most amazing wildlife. We saw bison, which are native to the area. We saw elk, weasels, and calves. As the sun began to set on the west, we rolled into Casper. Here we checked into the Radisson Hotel for the evening. In town we had a delicious dinner at Silver Fox Restaurant, followed by a night of shopping at the town mall. Maybe tomorrow before we leave Casper, we might be able to visit the old car show.
