PUTTING YOURSAFETY FIRSTThe road construction and maintenance industry continues to demand even higher levels of safety and productivity. In order to meet these requirements, we work continuously to develop safer products, and to produce comprehensive manuals on the safe and effective use of our products.
IT’S ALL ABOUT EVERYONE’S HEALTHHelping you to ensure a safer workplace and healthier workforce is of the utmost importance to us. The wellbeing of any person coming into contact with our equipment is paramount. Therefore, we strive to identify and assess potential risk factors that could threaten the health of you and your employees.
All products in this catalogue are designed to meet safety requirements.
BE AWARE OF ALL SAFETY PROCEDURESSafe work procedures should incorporate inspection – before the machine operates, and also through regular monitoring based upon road planing and grading conditions, safety and hazard management systems. Workers should be provided with safety information, instruction and training on transportation, installation, operational care and disposal of road planing and grading tools.
DRESS RIGHT FROM HEAD TO TOEYou must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times. This is what we strongly recommend to help avoid injury:
– Safety helmet– Hearing protection– Safety glasses– Protective, high-visibility clothing– Safety boots– Any site-specific PPE as required
BEFORE OPERATING THE MACHINE– Block off or stop operation if bystanders enter work area.– Stop operation if bystanders enter the work area.– Operate only from the operator's station.– Be alert to changes in the work area.– Watch out for bystanders or changes in weather and
soil conditions. MAKE A RISK ANALYSIS BEFORE YOU STARTPay attention to safety when planning all of your work. Before you start, always take the time to go through all operations. Identify any potential risks and take appropriate measures to avoid them. If necessary, seek expert advice on how to help minimize risks. Finally, make sure that you have the right resources to perform all tasks in the safest manner possible.

HOW TO WORKWITH SAFETY IN MINDLIFTINGUse the correct safe lifting practices when working with heavy items. Consider your body position, the awkwardness of the item and its weight. Are two people required for the job, or is a lifting device needed?
INSTALLATION/REMOVAL Cemented tungsten carbide tipped tools have tough wear resistant edges that may fracture or cause hard objects such as steel hammers to chip when struck during the installation or removal process. During installation, spring tensioned clips can become dislodged and a risk of injury exists. Use a brass or copper hammer to reduce this risk. Wear safety glasses and gloves as standard.
USE– Beware that rotating tools can break or
become dislodged during use.– Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as eye
protection and suitable clothing should be worn around machinery that uses carbide tipped tools.
– Machines generate noise; suitable hearing protection is recommended.
– Inspect tools before use and at regular intervals. If they
are loose, dull, bent, cracked, burred or otherwise unsuitable, DO NOT USE THEM! Replace them.

– Rotating tools can break or be dislodged during use. Personal protective equipment such as eye protection and suitable clothing should be worn around machinery using carbide tipped tools. Sandvik recommends introducing a barrier between the cutting drum or board and personnel.
BLOCKSDo not use blocks if they are cracked, bent or damaged. The use of tools in holders with excessively worn bores can cause loss of the cutting tool while it is in use, thereby creating a dangerous situation.
BOARDSDo not use boards if they are cracked, bent or damaged. The use of tools in boards with excessively worn bores

WORLD-LEADING EXPERTISEWe are the world’s leading supplier of machines and tool systems for all rock, surface and mineral excavation applications. We deliver millions of tools annually: for small road planing, ice scraping and projects that require roof drilling bits to be used for all types of coal and soft minerals, up to the biggest tunnelling, trenching and surface mining tools.
We constantly develop new hard material alloys, which function in today’s demanding environments. One of our extensive research projects in this field has resulted in the development of a new generation of carbide grades and larger, stronger and more stable and efficient tools. Demands on tool performance, particularly relating to cemented carbide tip material and its resistance to wear and fracture, become more critical as we progress into harder rock and mineral formations. Larger continuous cutting machines are being used to replace the drill and blast process in many mining projects. This continuous process offers a lower cost per ton of excavated material, ensures worker safety and has a positive effect on the environment.
TOUGHEST IN THE INDUSTRYThis latest generation of patented carbide grades is manufactured using an innovative process technique with completely new raw materials. The process has made it possible to create new, extra-coarse, super-tough alloys with perfectly uniform grain structure. It has also allowed us to better match tip material grade to hard rock and soft rock applications.
The creation of this material, with a significantly stronger carbide matrix and a perfect grain size configuration, has contributed to superior toughness and the high temperature wear resistance required for many operations. Our range of standard grades are cost effective in all general surface and underground applications, and can meet or exceed the performance of competitors’ brands. The XT-Grade has proven to be 1.5 to 3 times more effective than anything else on the market in hard-to-extreme tunnelling, trenching and coal mining applications.

RX CUTTING EDGES
INSTALLATION1. Remove old blades from your moldboard and clean
off all dirt on bolting surface.
2. Install new System 2000 boards and tools.
3. Move to flat, level surface. Apply forward and downward pressure. Using a magnetic protractor, set the board at 90° from the level surface. Tilt the moldboard back until the protractor reads 70°. Measure both ends of the moldboard. If different, split the difference. Mark the tilt quadrant and circle frame for future reference.
4. If the angle is not correct, chattering or vibration will occur. If this happens, adjust adapter back to 70°.
GENERAL OPERATION1. Ensure all tools are rotating freely and System 2000 is at the
correct operating angle. (see INSTALLATION)
2. Check rotation of tools periodically. A tool not rotating will leave a “drag mark,” and should be freed as soon as possible. Failure to do this will cause premature wear of the carbide tip.
3. In oil road reclamation and asphalt planing, take up only 1/2 of the material on the first pass. This will break the crust and make it possible to plane the desired depth.
4. When mixing calcium chloride, the tools should be pressure washed to prevent the mix from setting up between the tool shank and the spring retainer. Punch the tool out 3/4 of the way, and rotate by hand to free the tool. Then knock the tool back into place.
5. For ice and snow removal, put the blade in “float” position with no down pressure. Recommended travel speed is third gear (low range). Higher speeds could cause premature tool wear.
6. The one-piece board design has the ability to back-drag material from unwanted surfaces, such as manhole covers, driveways and curbs.
7. The unique design requires that the board be positioned at a 70° angle. This allows material to roll up the blade, providing superior mixing characteristics.

XSYSTEM 2000Grading Tools Guidelines
MAINTENANCE1. If tools are not rotating freely, pressure wash all sides
of the tools. After washing, rotate the tools by hand. For those not rotating, punch out and clean the bore hole and sleeve, then punch back into the adapter. Lubricate with any lightweight oil. A pneumatic impact wrench, or a socket wrench, can be used to spin tools that have an extended tail with hex geometry.
2. When center tools are worn down to 1/2 to 2/3 of their original size, rotate them with less worn outside tools.
3. Replace the tool if carbide wears to a flat spot, breaks or wears off.
4. If the end of the adapter on the outside of the grader moldboard shows wear, rotate with the center section adapter.

Patent-Pending Square Washer
New System 2000 Square Washers With Interlocking Feature (For 22 mm And 25 mm Tools)
System 2000 Tools With Square Washers
Sandvik System 2000® is a high-tech road rehabilitation cutting system, ideal for maintaining rural roads (e.g., ice, dirt, gravel, hauling roads). System 2000 increases productivity, essentially eliminating downtime. It works by utilizing a replaceable conical tool installed in a heat-treated adaptor board that allows better wear resistance and improved cutting capability over conventional steel blades.
In addition to the integral end protector – which always leaves cutting edges straight – the latest innovation to the System 2000 is a unique patent-pending square washer that further increases productivity.
