YOUR FRONT ROW SEATS TO VÉLO BIRMINGHAM & MIDLANDS! On Sunday 21 June 2020, we need your help to showcase the very best of the Midlands as we welcome 18,000 cyclists for the return of Vélo Birmingham & Midlands. Cyclists of all abilities will be taking on the 100-mile challenge on traffic-free roads, many of whom will be fundraising for charity. Riders will set off from the centre of Birmingham and head out on a journey through the beautiful West Midlands countryside, passing vibrant communities and enthusiastic supporters along the way! It is hugely exciting to be back for another year and there are countless ways you can get involved and make the most of the celebratory atmosphere throughout the region. We’d like to thank you in advance for your help and support! The purpose of this leaflet is to provide you with information about how to plan for the event which will pass near you. It also includes a detailed route map and key contact information that we recommend you keep hold of in case you need it in the lead up to the event or on the day itself. You can find more information on our website, which will be regularly updated, including a detailed interactive map, travel advice and local access routes. Please visit the ‘Local Info’ tab on www.velobirmingham.com. PLEASE PLAN AHEAD – HOW WILL YOUR TRAVEL BE AFFECTED? Due to the number of riders participating in Vélo Birmingham & Midlands, it will be necessary to implement road closures across the full route to ensure the safety of riders and the general public. This could impact your local travel arrangements on Sunday 21 June, including public transport. Where possible, we recommend planning travel ahead. The road closures will be put in place and removed in sections to minimise the length of time the roads are closed. On the day, you can use Google maps or a ‘live update GPS’ to navigate around the road closures as the route and road closures will be updated live. Footpaths and pavements will not be affected, so pedestrians will be able to use these as well as existing crossing points. In some sections of the route where there is a lack of suitable footpaths, pedestrian access to the road will be facilitated for access purposes only. Please take extra care when navigating roads along the route on foot and ask an event steward for assistance if you are unsure. Some bus services will be affected during the road closures. Check local bus routes on the Network West Midlands website and get the best travel options using the public transport journey planner. Visit – wmnetwork.co.uk/velo. CONTACT US We are here to help! If you need any assistance ahead of the event with planned travel or other questions, please get in touch with us as early as possible on [email protected]. On the day of the event, in the case of a personal emergency, we can assist on 0121 396 1296.

PLEASE PLAN AHEAD – HOW WILL YOUR TRAVEL BE AFFECTED?Due to the number of riders participating in Vélo Birmingham & Midlands, it will be necessary to implement road closures across the full route to ensure the safety of riders and the general public.

Page 4: ROAD CLOSURES – SUNDAY 21 JUNE - Velo …...Due to the number of riders participating in Vélo Birmingham & Midlands, it will be necessary to implement road closures across the full

GET INVOLVED!Vélo Birmingham & Midlands promises to be a fantastic day and we want to help you to make the most of it! If you’re a business, club, community organisation or resident, there are lots of ways to get involved and take advantage of the celebratory atmosphere that will be spread throughout the region.

Spectate: Line the streets in support of the riders and welcome them to your town or village. It’s the perfect excuse for a garden party or social occasion! The route boasts some of the best country pubs, local shops, cafés and restaurants, so why not check in with your local and enjoy the spectacle? The Spectators page on our website will be updated closer to the event with details of great locations to watch the action unfold and any activities in your local area. If you would like your village or business to be featured on this page, please get in touch as we’d love to hear from you!

Volunteer: An event of this scale wouldn’t be possible without an army of amazing volunteers. Register your interest via the link on our website or contact us on [email protected] if you’d like to be involved during the event weekend.

Take part: General entries may have sold out, but we’ve held entries back for Midlands residents, so it’s not too late to saddle up and get involved! All abilities are welcome... and lycra isn’t compulsory! Please email [email protected] for information.

Should you need to travel on Sunday 21 June, please plan ahead: • Check out the road closure times, interactive route map and local access plans on www.velobirmingham.com.• Consider the best mode of transport, departure time and route to avoid the road closures.• Allow plenty of time for travel. We anticipate increased levels of traffic on roads surrounding the route.• Businesses may need to review delivery schedules and liaise with staff regarding rotas and access arrangements during road closure times.• Visit the ‘Local Info’ section on the event website for more travel advice and FAQs.Parking: To ensure the safety of participants, residents and spectators, there will be parking restrictions in place along the event route. To prepare for the day, we kindly ask that you move your vehicle off the route the night before the event. For those affected we advise using local parking locations, your own driveway or alternative roads clear of the route. We will be issuing traffic enforcement notices 2 weeks before the event as a reminder. Your vehicle may be moved to a nearby location if you do not comply with these notices.

Litter and waste management: A full cleanse of the route will take place before and after the event to make sure we leave it as clean as we found it. We will ban any rider who is caught littering from all future Vélo events.

Emergency Services: We are working closely with the Emergency Services to ensure that their access is unaffected throughout the road closures. We want to stress that the Emergency Services are always prioritised during the event. Please follow normal protocol when reporting an emergency on the day. Please note the event has its own medical provider to cover the needs of participants.

Community welfare and carers: We appreciate the importance of the delivery of care and we will work closely with care providers and individuals to make sure that care visits are delivered as usual throughout the road closure period. Care providers should plan their journeys ahead, taking into account road closure times and potential increased traffic. Any carers who have any concerns or need assistance planning travel should contact us on [email protected].

On-call doctors, vets and district nurses: If you are an on-call doctor, vet or district nurse that may be affected by the road closures, you can get in touch with us by emailing [email protected]. In the event of a call-out for which you need access to the route on the day of the event, you can call the event hotline on 0121 396 1296 so that we can provide direct assistance.

Farms: Any farmers that have concerns regarding their day to day operations should contact us on [email protected].
