THE PLATFORM

I always enjoy working with the RNCM orchestras, and the orchestra that I had for the recording of Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra was exceptional. The ability of these young players to rise to the challenge of this orchestral showpiece and to deal with the demands of the recording studio was very impressive.

Before I decided where to study my postgraduate degree I researched a great deal and attended many auditions in conservatoires throughout the UK. I chose the RNCM because of its fantastic reputation and because I felt immediately welcomed.

The most amazing opportunity came last year when I played the role of amastre in the RNCM production of Handel’s xerxes. The role gave me the opportunity to experience the intense rehearsal and performance schedule of a professional opera performer and also to have the thrill of performing to a packed house. I really value the performance opportunities I have had from opera scenes, festivals and external engagements.

The staff here are very supportive and receptive to my needs; they are able to offer me the flexibility to focus my work on the areas that most need development. for example, I have been able to take a number of language classes. I have enjoyed the course so much that I intend to continue my studies here prior to embarking on a career as a freelance performer; my ultimate ambition is to perform in opera.

If anyone asked me why they should come to study in Manchester I would say that it is a really vibrant place with so much culture and a great community feel.

I’m originally from Taiwan, and I chose to study my Master of Performance degree at the RNCM after studying in Paris for four years. The Master of Performance course is well-suited to my needs and has broadened my repertoire. There are many opportunities to perform as part of an orchestra and in concerts, festivals and church recitals. Through the academic strand of the course I have also been able to build up my research skills and the practical pedagogy of the course component supports the development of my teaching ability.

Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to play the Prokofiev Piano Concerto with the Manchester Beethoven Orchestra. It was not only a great chance to learn how to communicate more effectively with the orchestra and conductor, but also to improve my performance technique through taking part in the public concerts. I’ve also had a recent masterclasss with Vovka ashkenazy and one-to-one lessons with Philippe Cassard, Nelson Goerner and Michel Béroff, where I was given invaluable critique to help to improve my performance.

This year the RNCM is celebrating the work of Beethoven with an extensive programme of concerts. as part of this celebration, I performed Beethoven’s Große fuge for piano duo, a challenging piece which was rewarding to learn and perform in the RNCM Concert Hall.

RNCM has excellent facilities and practice rooms. If you live in the hall of residence, which is located next door to the College, you can practise in your room. There are many performance opportunities for students throughout the year including festivals, competitions, opera, spotlight concerts and external engagements. These opportunities allow you to develop your experience as a performer to become a professional musician.

THe RNCM’S POSTGRadUaTe ReSeaRCH deGReeS PROVIde OPPORTUNITIeS TO CONdUCT INdePeNdeNT

ReSeaRCH GUIded BY WORld-ClaSS SPeCIalIST STaff.

If you have a strongly-defined idea of a research project in some aspect of music, and you want to be given the freedom to pursue that idea through a process of rigorous enquiry and reflection, then a research degree may well be the right one for you. You will have access to our outstanding resources and facilities, supervision of the highest calibre, individually-tailored research training and a range of opportunities for career development and enhancement.

all postgraduate research students are supported by a supervisory team, normally drawn from the RNCM’s specialist faculty and made up of a principal supervisor with specific expertise in the student’s area of research and a secondary supervisor who provides additional advice and support. In addition, each student is assigned a director of Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), which validates and awards RNCM research degrees.

Candidates’ research topics and methods should be congruent with those of their supervisor so you should start by identifying a potential supervisor for your project. You should then send a brief outline proposal to [email protected]

The topics that can be investigated within the four strands of the MPhil/Phd programme range from a traditional exposition of a historical musicological thesis or report of original research in music psychology to other project-based work that relates in imaginative ways to performance studies, composition, recordings, theory and criticism.

My background is in Music and Psychology. I completed my MPhil in educational Psychology at Cambridge and then spent time working in Human Resources for an investment bank in london and also at Intermusica artist Management looking after conductors, pianists and violinists, before returning to academic research.

I now work on a collaborative project at the RNCM exploring how technology vibrotactile technology can help musicians with hearing impairments play music together. Beethoven, in his time, and dame evelyn Glennie, today, have both used vibration in their music making. We also know it is possible to compose and even to perform music if you are deaf, but that there are challenges to overcome, especially regarding the need to stay in time and in tune with other players.

during my research my team has conducted interviews, observations and experiments to find out how hearing impairments affect performance and what musical information can be perceived using vibrations. This will contribute to the development of vibrotactile technology aiming to improve access to music for people with hearing impairments and facilitate group music performance throughout their lives.

The RNCM has a small but growing research community that capitalises on the resources available both within the college and in Manchester. Researching aspects of perception and musical performance requires access to trained musicians and being based at the RNCM has been crucial in this respect - many students have taken part in our studies and the staff have always been helpful and supportive.
