rms (room monitoring status)
DESCRIPTION
The use of the rms system in a hotel room enables the monitoring of room status. When a guest opens a room and inserts the card in the card holder, electric circuits are activated and the room status at the reception desk changes. If a chambermaid or a member of the hotel staff enters the room, the status on the reception desk will be displayed as “staff”. With the real-time monitoring of rooms, the guests will not have to be unnecessarily inconvenienced, and all services can be performed with increased peed and efficiency.TRANSCRIPT

rms (Room monitoring status) System description, September 2009
The use of the rms system in a hotel room enables the monitoring of room status. When a guest opens a room
and inserts the card in the card holder, electric circuits are activated and the room status at the reception desk
changes. If a chambermaid or a member of the hotel staff enters the room, the status on the reception desk will
be displayed as “staff”. With the real-time monitoring of rooms, the guests will not have to be unnecessarily
inconvenienced, and all services can be performed with increased speed and efficiency.
Functionality
The system is comprised of the hardware and software parts which form a complete unit for monitoring
room status.
Card holder (VingCard)
Reads data on card type (guest, employee) and transfers the card data to the in-room rms module.
The card holder uses the magnetic stripe reader and contactless MIFARE reader technologies.
In-room rms module
The module collects data on the inserted card, card type (guest, staff), the condition of additional sensors
(door and windows contact) and SOS signals. Depending on room status, contact is given to turn the air-
conditioning unit on or off. The collected data are sent wirelessly (2.4GHz IEEE802.15.4) to the rms control
module.
The rms control module
It wirelessly collects data from all the in-room rms modules connected to it. The collected data are forwarded
via LAN network to the rms program for room status monitoring.

rms program
After the VingCard lock is opened, the room is entered and the card is inserted in the card holder, the rms
controller wirelessly forwards the data to the central rms module (the number and layout of the devices is
determined depending on the size of the hotel and the possibility of wireless corridor coverage) which then
forwards the data through the LAN network to the reception desk software.
The VingCard intelligent controller distinguishes the guest card from the employee card and on that basis
displays the room status on the reception software with the accompanying reports.
The room status enables reports for hotel staff (a report on guest presence in the room, open windows, etc. is
available at all times).
When the card is inserted, besides the forwarding of data, the welcome light and the air-conditioning are
activated. The data visible on the reception desk enable the forced activation or deactivation of the air-
conditioning unit.
