GRUNBELT NEWS REVIEW

GrMnbelt Soccer, Due to poor home fteld condi

tlona, all Greenbelt home pmes were either poatponed or relocated laat Saturday. Greenbelt iooked solid and well prepared for the spring aeaaon. The six year old team played a tough defensive game with a 0-0 tie against New Carrollton. In spite of valiant eft'orta by forwards Adam Wheatley, Shawn Wilson and Rachel Houaer, Greenbelt could not aeore. Goalies Tim Farley, Scott Lubey and :Michael O'Brien kept New Carrollton aeoreless.

Greenbelt's ten year olds also tied, but with a 2-2 score. Jonathan Schaeter aeored both goals, and Mike Kramer and Stevie Tapley made aome Close shots on goal. Chris Davia and Jay Hilbert did a very ftne job in goal against Beltsville.

The 12 year olds also had a 2-2 tie game aeainst Beltsville. Sash& Gomelsky scored both Greenbelt goals on penalty kicks. Sean Arthurs and Pat Heaney proved themselves quality goalies, and Colin Joseph looked strong and conftdent on the front line.

, Rookie Ed Lavan was impressive throughout the game.

The 14 year old team took a 1-0 loss after holding Beltsville scoreless for moat of the game. Rookie Daniel Kreiger was especially exciting to watch playIng goalie, inakine aome incredible savea! Matt Webb and Daryl Brooks threatened to score several times, but a tough Beltsville defense kept Greenbelt scoreless. Since Greenbelt waa playing with one player miuing the entire game, the team will be a force to be reckoned with once all team playera are together.

The evening had opened In the spirit of cood will with the 8wearlne In of Franci1 T. Hutson as Deputy Chief of Pollee for the Greenbelt P o II e e Department. Mayor Weidenfeld did the.llonon and preaented Hutaon with his badge. "I've heard aome vel'J' good thinga about you," Weldenfeld said addinr tbat Greenbelt had a very eood pollee depart. ment and "I know you will make it better."

Council alao reaponded enthusiastically to a requeat for par· ticipation in a aiater city adoption program with a cit)' In the Soviet Union. Gail Drake, re;ruentlq the Greenbelt Peaee Committee, made the request. The committee has aelected the geocraphically similar city of Rezekne to adopt. The purpose of this "aiater city exchange. procram" Ia to create a bridge of underatanding between citizens of the United States and the Soviet Union. "We feel it is important to develop channels of communication with those who might otherwiae be considered our e.nemlea," aummarized Drake.

Rezekne is a Latvian city about 200 miles northwl'st of :Moaeow. Like Greenbelt it is near a railroad and has a lake. By mailing information to the city from various Greenbelt croupa, the commt"ttee hopes to open the channel• of communication and in tum learn about Rezekne. The committee notes that "Governments have to deal in formalitiea, but we individuals can all help build a bridge of underatandlng and

appreciation for the human qualltiea ahared by Americans and Soviet Latviana."

II any organizations h a v e acned to participate by Including material in the ftrat mailing to Reukne on the ftrst day of spring. Council readily acreed that it was appropriate to aend a letter of friendship aimed by all the city council membera. If and when a response ia received, council aeemed ready to move a resolution adoptinc Greenbelt's sister city.

Councilman Thomaa Wliite explained that hia interest waa no leu than "preeervine life on thia planet." So supportive was Councilman Richard Pilski that he suggested the program be expande\1 to adopt another sister. city-the Lithuanian home of hia mother and father. Jim. Casaels from the committee agreed that they would consider his request.

Council also quickly voiced support for a petition presented by Jack Snoddy of the Greenbelt Volunteer F i r e . Department. Snoddy voiced the department's displeasure with proposed county bill 26 which calls for charging fees for ambulance aervicea. The bill he explained would be a "slap in the face" to the volunteer and would result in significant loss of revenue for the department.

Readily agreeing, council directed that staff prepare a letter opposing the passage of CB 26 and suggesting that munlcipali· ties should have been consulted beforehand. The letter was to be ready for Snoddy to hand-carry to a hearing on the bill the next day.

T h e memorandum alao anticlpatll that the corporation will contract with GHI to provide loan proceaalng and underwritlnr aervice• for GHl appllcanta, thereby provldlnr GHI alao with fee Income.

Potential Beaeftta Naraaimban characterized the

NCCB memorandum aa a "very attractive propoaal because GHI will rain fee income, eonaiderably reduce Ita risk, and pin accen to several million dollars for re~&lea 1\nancing-all in return for an equity investment in this new entity of between $100,000 and $200,000." Subsequent discussion indicated that funds for GHI's inveatment would probably come from the Land Reaerve Fund.

Naraalmhan stated, however, that it would be difllcult to explain to NCCB the exclusIon of any part of OHI membership from eligibility for beMftts accruing from ownership of stock In a new corporation.

Secretary Janet Cantwell took lsaue with Jenklna' comments, saying that an t«ort should be made to heal the aplit within the community; Dl~t D ebb I e Hartwick agreed~ylnc that thla was a whole new nnture which

' presented an opportunl.tyto '>ring the larger hom&f back into the same status as the others. Audit Committee member Ray McCawley pointed out that if Land Reserve Funds are used for the equity investment, the larger homes would have made a contribut!lon to the funds used.

On a motion by Director Wayne Williams, the board voted 6-1 (Jenkins opposed) to authorize management to algn the memorandum of undl!l'standing and to prGceed with preparation of documents for presentation to the membership for their at

the annual membership meeting on May 16.

In other bualneas, the board received a draft of rulea and regulations governing maintenance of yards and regulations concerning fences, hedges and access ways. These regulations will b• presented for ftnal approval at the March 22 board meeting.

The board approved unanimously a management proposal of a 3-year plan for modernizing the GHI motor vehicle fleet. The plan will reduce the motor car fteet from five cars to two and the truck fleet from 22 to 18. The average age of the fleet at the end of the 8-year replacement program will be about five years.
