Socialization
According to agents of socialization definition, it is the people like PARENTS, PEERS, SOCIAL
INSTITUTIONS like schools and religious institutions that help in integration of an
individual with society.
Religious Institutions as
an agent of
socialization
• Religious institutions are considered as a secondary agent of socialization
• Secondary agents of socialization are those institutions or places that help an individual find his place within the society
• It helps a child in improving social skills that helps the individual in integrating well with the society around him
• Religious groups transmit definite political preferences to their practitioners
How does religious Institution act as agents of socialization ?
a• According to David Émile Durkheim a french sociologist, society has a life and power of its own beyond the life of an individual.
• In other words, society itself is godlike, shaping the lives of its members and providing religious practitions
• Durkheim identified three major functions of religion that contribute to the operation of society:

•Religion unites people through shared symbolism, values and norms
•Religious thought and ritual establish rules of fair play, organizing or social life
Social Control
•Defining god as “judge” encourage people to obey cultural norms
•Promote confirmity
