‘If I ruled the world, every day would be the first day of Spring…’ sings Tony Bennett, the last crooner in the generation of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. The loyal reader of this column knows I love this music. It’s timeless – simply perfect for leaving the world behind. I’m not the only devotee – just look at the success of the new Sinatra, Michael Bublé.

Suppose we could choose a favourite moment out of all the seasons – wouldn’t we choose the first day of spring? And I don’t mean the day the calendar says is the first day of spring, but the first day according to Mother Nature. What’s nicer than waking up to the singing of birds? You open the curtains, and the sun’s already shining – no more going to work in the dark. Wonderful. For me, it means ‘summer’s coming’.

Last autumn I spent a few days in Buenos Aires. I travel a lot for my work and I find inspiration everywhere, but South America – and Argentina in particular – had been on my wish list for years. Maybe it’s coincidence, but we have two South American guys playing music in The Concept Store during the weekends. Practically every Saturday and Sunday afternoon (for the hours, please see the website, under the heading ‘Concept Store’) we have live music in our showpiece store in Amsterdam. We discovered these two in Vertigo, a restaurant in the Vondelpark. They come from Buenos Aires and are attending the music conservatory in Amsterdam. They gave me a list of tips that proved more than worthwhile. In BA, the seasons are reversed, so it was spring there in November and already fairly warm – around 24 degrees – and all the trees were in bloom. It smelled wonderful and the birds were singing their hearts out. Odd to experience spring there when winter was on its way in Europe.

Buenos Aires is the city of the Tango, Argentine steaks, Evita Peron and Maradonna. I was there to pick up some inspiration and didn’t know what to expect. I went there as a blank slate. What a brilliant city with all its fantastic stores and restaurants. Argentines are warm-blooded people who truly appreciate elegant surroundings; practically all the shoe and clothing stores are designed with absolutely beautiful taste. A lot of time and money is invested in the décor of these stores. The place to be is Palermo Soho, a cross between New York’s SoHo and the 9 little streets in Amsterdam but then with much larger and more beautiful retail properties. They sometimes include whole gardens or courtyards full of plants and/or cactuses in old pots – created simply for atmosphere. Clothing stores aren’t full of boring clothing racks à la H&M. Instead, what you’ll see are antique cabinets and tables here and there with clothing displayed on whimsically nostalgic racks. Few things made by Gucci, Prada or Louis Vuitton, but lots of local labels made in Argentina. And, of course, simply wonderful food enjoyed in dozens of restaurants oozing with atmosphere. In short, highly recommended – that is, if 13 hours flying time from Europe doesn’t put you off.

So... for the coming season we have the ‘Buenos Aires sofa’, a delightful light lounging sofa. Just seeing it puts a smile on your face. Page 35 of this magazine and our website include an extensive travelogue devoted to this inspiring city.

What do you think of our new restyled RM magazine?Well, I’m proud of it! It was quite a job to get everything on the right printing plate – or maybe I should say ‘the right SD memory card’. For the photography, I went for a crisp, clean, basic house this spring. This way, everyone can see that our furniture and accessories look perfect in a 1930s house, as well as a contemporary house with sleek simple lines. It’s combinations like these that make the look even more effective. That goes not just for furniture but also for things like our mini flower vases. Put 15 on a serving tray. Et voilà.

It was also fun to take pictures of a loyal customer and her hobby. Talitha’s cakes look simply fabulous – and they’re delicious, too. I was totally inspired to create that page with all those cakes and cookies. Everything looked so pretty on our cake stands. Made me wonder why I had just decided to go on a diet!

FARMHOUSE in A nATURE RESERVE

WHY THIS 100-YEAR-OLD FARMHOUSE? ‘The location and the infinite view’, replies Bastiaan straightaway. ‘But we were rather put off by how it looked inside. Everything was dark brown and terra cotta. it looked a little like a 1970s Spanish hacienda’, adds Tooske. ‘For the first two years, we just left it that way; we furnished it with stuff we had left over along with cast-offs from friends. it was really “a mixed bag of junk”. The only things we bought a lot of straightaway were pillows and mattresses so that our friends and their children could always stay over. Right from the start, we were creating a nice place to stay.’

A LOT OF RESTORATION? ‘At a certain point, we took a good look around and decided to make some major changes. Our biggest wish was to lighten up our dark “cave”. We achieved this by painting everything light. The result is amazing. The other wish was a large fireplace. But that meant moving the flue, and that was the biggest operation of all. We now have an original 18th-century French mantelpiece that we can build a fire in at ground level. it’s brilliant! And we’ve covered the floor in French oak.’‘This farmhouse has lots of wooden beams, and we left the old cast-iron nails alone. We didn’t do anything to the old radiators either. Special details give a house character. now that the house is lighter, it also looks a lot bigger.’ >

Tooske Ragas-Breugem (born: 1974) is the presen-ter of countless TV programmes but has also played in a Dutch musical (‘De 3 Musketiers’) and acted in films. now, after presenting a popular german talent search programme for several years, she’s presen-ting two Dutch programmes, a talent search for pop stars and a house-hunting show. Bastiaan Ragas (born: 1971) is a singer, musical star, actor and writer. in the 1990s, he was a member of the popular boy band Caught in the Act and was successful in germany, Asia and Australia. Since then, he played the leads in two Dutch musicals (‘Aida’ and ‘De 3 Musketiers’) and will have the lead in the 2011-2012 production of a Dutch musical comedy about what every man should know about pregnancy and delivery. His first book of short stories will be published in June.

Tips van Nico Tijsen‘Tooske and Bastiaan’s house has wonderful light rooms with beautiful wooden floors, so the foundation was already laid. Because of the farmhouse’s pyramidal roof, it has lots of slanted ceilings with low walls. The solution was to place baskets against them – the perfect place to put away all the toys after the couple’s four children have finished playing with them. With kids, it’s also handy to have chairs with removable covers so that an accidental brushstroke is no cause for panic. The fireplace is the focal point in this house, and the full-length mirror above it makes this spot a real pièce de résistance.’ For more decorating tips: rivieramaison.com

NICEST SPOT IN THE HOUSE? ‘in front of the fireplace. it’s a wonderful spot, especially now that we have those nice roomy wingchairs. On a cold night, we sit here nice and cosy, all of us watching the flames,’ says Bastiaan. ‘i especially like the long dining table,’ says Tooske. ‘We spend so much time there with the children watching them draw and play with clay. it’s also the perfect spot to linger with friends after dinner, especially because these dining room chairs are as comfortable as easy chairs.’ ANY OTHER WISHES? ‘it might sound dull, but it really isn’t. We’re so happy with this farm-house, and we feel privileged that besides our busy life in Amsterdam, we can also give our children a place where they can climb trees to their hearts’ content. We also made a conscious decision not to have internet access or TV here. What we especially enjoy during every free hour that we spend here is the peace and quiet. This is life’s most precious possession.’ <

Make a vegetarian sandwich with cucumber, lettuce, tomato and egg even tastier by adding rocket, mozzarella, garden cress, avocado and lime juice. With directions from Marco Schoonhagen of Restaurant Long Island, here’s a recipe for a delicious ‘spring sandwich’:

Ciabatta with smoked chicken Ingredients:ciabattathinly sliced smoked chicken breastslices of fresh mango2 tablespoons of mayonnaise

with a pinch of hot curry powdera few fresh spinach leaves (the dark green, curly-leaf kind)

Preparation:Slice the roll open, spread both halves with the curry-mayonnaise. On the bottom half, place the spinach leaves and then a generous layer of the smoked chicken breast. On top of this, stack the mango slices, and top with the upper half of the ciabatta.

F Nestled in the rolling English countryside is this centuries-old stud farm known as Fairfield Stables. Encircling the stables complex are old brick walls, completely overgrown with roses and ivy. There’s an air of excitement here: top equestrians and their thoroughbred mounts are preparing for an international event. At the nearby clubhouse, though, things are more relaxed – in this inviting interior, leather armchairs with sand and cream-coloured accessories set the scene. Many pillows have special details such as a bridle bit.

The ‘bridle’ is a lampshade with its own bit. A bit is placed in the

Why thiS hobby? I love cooking in general, and I haven’t been baking these kinds of cakes very long. Before I decided to start doing it myself, I spent a little time seeing how other people did it. I could hardly wait to try it myself – after my first one, I was completely sold. A lot of work goes into making a cake like this, but it’s so much fun to do.

What kinD oF CakeS? By now, my repertoire includes wedding cakes, cakes for new parents, birthday cakes and cakes for companies. I can bake a cake for any special occasion.

Do you take oRDeRS, too? Since I have my own birthday just once a year, I already have all my diplomas, and I don’t have a big family, I decided to take orders for my cakes, too. Because of my work, I have to schedule this ahead of time, so I ask people to place their order well in advance by e-mail (lovetoeat@live.nl). We can then decide on the colour, flavour and design.

the MoSt DiFFiCuLt Cake you eVeR MaDe? Every cake I make is demanding, but that’s exactly what makes them so much fun. You have to be inspired at just the right moment. Your hands don’t always do what you have in mind. Decorating the cake is always a challenge. The fondant has to fit like a glove – no seams or cracks showing. And stacking the layers is a stressy operation, too.

hoW Many CaLoRieS on aVeRaGe? Cakes are for parties – you don’t count calories at a party!

tRenDS in CakeS? The tiered cakes I make are a real trend right now. You can make them in any colour you want. They can be rectangular, round, or used interchangeably; with so many choices, you can really add sparkle to your cakes. Take a wedding cake: I could make one in the colour of the bride’s bouquet or dress. The cakes I make to celebrate the birth of a baby are usually pink or blue with a handmade stork or baby on top. A cake made for a company can have its logo printed on top. The possibilities are endless.

MoSt DeLiCiouS Cake? Oof, that’s hard to answer because I like so many – as long as they’re fresh and made with love. That’s something you can taste! A cake with a lemon curd and vanilla crème filling is scrumptious, but so is a cake with whipped cream and raspberry preserves and finished with vanilla crème.

eSSentiaL FoR Cake bakinG? Patience is key to making these kinds of cakes. It takes me two to three days to finish a cake. I often want to work out an idea all at once, but a ribbon or other element has to harden for a couple of hours first. That’s when it’s hard to wait.

Light!

Tips from nico Tijsen I always use a lot of floor and table lamps – not just for their atmospheric effect but also for the flexibility this offers. (You’ll have to have several outlets, though!) Exchange a ‘winter shade’ on your lamp for a ‘summer shade’. Little effort for a splendid effect.

Consider the source(s) of natural light first; sunlight is the

most important form of lighting. If the room receives no

sunlight, it would be advisable to use lots of white. White

reflects light and makes a room look both lighter and larger.

Place mirrors in strategic spots as well.

Consider the function of the room; a study requires a

different kind of lighting than a bedroom does.

Make a lighting plan by considering which spots need

more light. This lighting can be classified into general and

atmospheric lighting. General lighting ensures the quick easy

illumination of a room. A dimmer is always useful to keep the

light from being too bright when first turned on.

Atmospheric lighting is the best way to make your home

look inviting. No wonder that Rivièra Maison has so many

Rivièra Maison has entered into a collaboration with the Dutch Ronald McDonald House Foundation. In 2011, Rivièra Maison will contribute to the foundation by decorating two sitting rooms in houses in The Hague and Veldhoven. A Ronald McDonald House provides parents of ill or handicapped children with comfortable accommodations. Most of these houses are within walking distance of the hospital so that parents can get to their sick child quickly. The house in The Hague is even located on the roof of the Juliana Children’s Hospital. Having the house so close-by makes not only parents but also their children feel more secure.

Rivièra Maison had already decorated a living room for the house in Leiden. ‘We received many positive reactions to this,’ says Tessa Colijn, Sponsoring Coordinator for the foundation. ‘Rivièra Maison’s furnishings create a warm feeling, and this is exactly what a family needs during the often difficult time that they spend with us. So we’re extremely pleased that Rivièra Maison is going to decorate these sitting rooms.’
