Spring is here, and that also means we are in the home stretch of the school year – just 3 more
months left of the 2018/2019 school year!
March brings us to our second big fundraiser of the year and an annual favorite – Fun Run!
This year it will be held on March 15. This year’s theme is “The Riviera Shamrock Shuffle
– 2019 Fun Run & Race For Gold” where the kids will be racing for gold, and earning a
little gold for the PTA. Thank you to Fun Run Chair, Michael Pandolfo and his committee, for
planning a great event. This is a fitness event, a fundraising event, and an all-around fun day.
Of course, this fun day requires A LOT of volunteers. Please stay tuned for communication
from your room parent asking for Fun Run volunteers.
Our Career Day Chair, Cristina McKinnon, has created a fun Career Day for March 26. We
hope your kids will learn a lot about different careers and are already making plans for their
future. Thank you in advance to all the parents who will take time off and share their work
experience. See page 5 for more information.
March 19 is the day the 5th graders will have their class picture taken. This is a picture of the
entire 5th grade class and an individual picture that will be in the diploma your 5th grader will
receive at fifth grade promotion ceremony. It’s customary for the kids to dress up for this
photo shoot – ties, dresses, the whole kit and caboodle.
That brings us to another annual favorite, the Bike Rodeo on March 22. This is a competition
that tests the kids on their bike skills as well as their safety knowledge. This event is open to
all 3-5th graders. The winners of the contest will go to compete at the district level on
Saturday, May 4. Please be especially careful when dropping your kids off on 3/22 – many kids
will be riding their bikes to school that day. Thank you to Bike Rodeo Chair, Faye Rowell, for
organizing the entire event.
Also, our annual GALA is happening on April 27. Mark your calendars for a FUN night at
Smog City Brewery for a “taste of the town” with food from many local restaurants!
Invitations were recently sent home. We are looking for donations that we can auction out at
the Gala. See page 9 for more information about donating and page 7 for event and ticket
info.
Let’s keep “Growing Together” as a community and leading by example.

March 2019 2 RIVIERA REVIEW
On March 4, the Riviera PTA recognized the following individuals for
their outstanding support of Riviera Elementary School. Each has
made a lasting impact on the Riviera learning community. Thank you
for your service to our students and community!
Do you want to win a brand new 2019 Lexus NX300h Hybrid SUV? If so, please stop by the
office to purchase a raffle ticket. Tickets are $30 - but $20 comes directly back to Riviera
Elementary School. Last year, a teacher at Hickory Elementary won the car. It would be great
to have a Riviera winner! Riviera will sell tickets until April 19 and the winner will be drawn at
the TEF Silver Anniversary Gala on May 4, 2019. See page 14 for more info.
Proceeds from the raffle ticket sale will be earmarked for technology needs in the new
Science Lab. Our goal is to have a dedicated teacher laptop and sound amplification system
for instruction in the lab. All grade levels are visiting our amazing Science Lab weekly. This
month, silk worms and frog kits were delivered for experimentation. Riviera also received an
anonymous $5000 donation for the new Riviera garden, which will be an extension of the new
lab!
Speaking of STEM…all Kinder
through 5th grade students have the
opportunity to participate in the
Riviera STEAM Fair on Thursday,
April 4. This year, students will be
applying and practicing their
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math skills, but approaching the projects with a
creative or Artistic perspective (the A in STEAM). This perspective is based on the new Next
Generation Science Standards (NGSS) where students are encouraged to focus not just on
results, but on their process, one that includes trial and error, divergent thinking, dynamic
problem solving, and plenty of perseverance. Mr. Hicks, Mr. Musick, Mrs. Elder, and
Mrs. Glavas have prepared student information packets, and guidelines were sent home in
February.

Fun Run & Shamrock Shuffle
Friday, March 15
Again this year, we are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day at our Fun Run. The Shamrock Shuffle takes place on Riviera Elementary’s Fun Run track. Race for Gold!
Wear your grade level shirt or a shirt of that color and some green accessories. And don’t forget your running shoes! As always, anything you wear must be safe to run in. Of course, our DJ will be spinning tunes to keep everyone motivated and
moving to the beat.
Information Packets & Sponsorship Envelopes were sent home with each student.
Room parents will also be reaching out for event-day volunteers.
The purpose: To raise money for our Science and Computer Labs, Music, special assemblies, field trips, Adventures in Art, part time teachers, Library supplies, and many other PTA-sponsored programs. Last year was overwhelmingly successful. This year, we have a goal of over $25,000 in pledges from Riviera Roadrunner families, friends, relatives, and neighbors.
We have some terrific raffle prizes for our participants again this year, plus it’s a great way to pro-mote physical fitness. All Riviera students and staff are looking forward to running and walking. This is a day of fun for all!

Health Matters
Think twice before popping the pills!
While antibiotics are lifesaving marvels in the right setting, they can
sometimes cause more harm than good. • In the last eblast we mentioned that antibiotic resistance is on the rise.
• This occurs when bacteria outsmart the drug that was designed to kill them.
• This is very dangerous as there are several “superbugs” out there and we are left with
nothing to treat them with.
• Antibiotic resistance is primarily caused by the overuse of antibiotics.
• The more people who use antibiotics the more resistant germs grow.
• In addition to fostering germ resistance, antibiotics are often associated with dangerous
side effects (upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, rash) and allergic reactions.
• Further, taking antibiotics destroys your bodies protective good bacteria allowing bad ones
to take over, this can lead to things like yeast infections and sometimes life-threatening
diarrhea.
• Research shows that sick patients often expect to get antibiotics when they visit their
doctor’s office and that doctors feel pressured to meet their patient’s expectations, even if
an antibiotic is not appropriate for the illness.
• Remember; colds, respiratory infections, “bronchitis”, sinus infections, pink eye, and sore
throats are mostly caused by viruses.
• A viral infection cannot be fixed with antibiotics.
• A recent study showed that a quarter of outpatient antibiotic prescriptions in the U.S. were
not appropriate.
• Both patients and doctors should use careful judgement on when to expect, take and
prescribe these potential life savers.
(It’s ok to tell your doctor, “I would like to avoid unnecessary antibiotics.” They might
even smile!)
Please submit questions for the Roadrunner Doc, suggest topics, or let us
know if you’d like to join the team at [email protected].

Plastics in... clothes!
Did you know?
Polyester, nylon, acrylic, fleece, rayon... are plastic-based fabrics. They're every-where, from sweaters to yoga outfits! Manufacturing them creates lots of pollution. Washing them sends microplastics to the ocean. They won't biodegrade. Plus they make for a huge part of the landfills.
Time to reduce the ecological
impact of clothing!
Visit THRIFT stores : 2 at Riviera village!
Trade clothes with friends
Give outgrown clothes and shoes to friends and charities
Buy clothes in person if possible, so you can try it on and you
don’t have to return: Less fuel and packaging waste!
If your clothes can't be worn as is because of stains or holes, H&M takes your “clothes and textiles from any brand, in any condition.” (Plus you get a coupon!)
