General Manager’s MessageBy Bill Wagner, CCM

As I write this, we have reached the hottest part of theSouth Florida summer, although this year it seems like therest of the country has outdone us in extremetemperatures. What I have learned over a lifetime of

Florida summers is that just when it seems like there will be no end to therelentless sun and humidity, our glorious winter weather cannot be far behind. With that in our thoughts, the staff is very busy making plans for what weanticipate to be an extraordinary coming year.

We can look back on this summer and note that we have had the mostsuccessful junior summer camp in the history of Riviera Country Club. Whatcould be better than seeing our youngest members laughing and having a goodtime at Camp Riv? I hope you all had the opportunity to look in on the fun.

I am happy to report that we have found our new Food & Beverage Directorand his name is Jean Pierre Decrequy. Jean Pierre has worked at some of thefinest international hotels and clubs and is a certified executive chef. He will, Iam certain, make a fine addition to the Riviera staff.

We hope you will join us at our traditional Labor Day Celebration onSeptember 4, and our Seafood & Lobster Bash on September 29. Labor Daywill include a Tennis Round Robin and a Mixed Golf Event, along with theessential hot dogs, all their accompaniments, and beer and sodas. If you love thefruits of the sea, then our Seafood and Lobster Bash is the place to be. Miami’sHeat Band will entertain us and we expect this event to be a sellout, so makeyour reservations early.

On page 6 of this newsletter, you will see an article about Stu Thomas, one ofour Members who recently passed away. It will make you smile as you see hisold friends gather to memorialize, commemorate, and celebrate his life. Abeautiful teak bench with a brass inscription was unveiled on the chippingrange, directly across the street from Stu’s home. Riviera is home to so manywonderful Members, and their gesture is proof of that camaraderie.

Bill Wagner

Remembering Stewart P. Thomas

On Saturday, July 8th, at 8:34 A.M., Members gathered toremember their good friend and fellow Member, StewartP. Thomas. A beautiful teak bench with a brass inscriptionwas unveiled on the chipping range, directly across thestreet from Stu’s home.

8:34 A.M. every Saturday morning was Stu’s traditionalgolf starting time, and was deemed the appropriate timefor this memorial ceremony. Jim Armstrong, Stu’s long-time friend, recounted that we always used to complimentStu on a great shot, but never his swing – which wasunique to Stu. With a Bloody Mary in hand, Jim toasted,“Nice swing, Stu!”

From the GreenCommittee Leigh Livesay, ChairmanOur putting greens represent less than five percentof our managed turf area, yet their quality canmake or break a golfer’s experience. By theconclusion of September, we will have ended thesummer’s heavy maintenance, with the fourth andfinal green aerification completed by mid-month.We can look forward to great playing conditionsthis fall and through the spring. All Members canall help by filling our divots, properly repairingball marks, raking the bunkers, and proper cart use.

I would like to start out by saying I have received a very warm welcometo the Club by manyMembers. It is great tohear the stories and historyabout the Club from manyof you. The history andwarm welcome has mademe very happy to be a partof such a great operation. Ilook forward to meetingmany more of you whenyou return from yoursummer vacations andretreats.

The Members that are in town and playing the course over the last threemonths have surely seen changes. We have planted some new trees, changed the fairway mowing lines to make the course more interesting, grown some rough, and chipped away at the summer culturalmaintenance program.

This summer’s program isan aggressive one. Wehave had two aerificationsand four heavy verticutson the greens. All of theseprocesses were followedby topdressing andbrushing. Three down andone more to go. The lastgreen aerification date isSeptember 18th.Aerification will also takeplace on the tees, collars,

and fairways during the month of September. This will happen onMondays and should not affect play.

By performing these necessary processes, we will have made an impactand removed a large amount of organic material built up on the greens. Itis the natural desire of the Tif-Eagle bermudagrass to produce thatch. Thethatch breaks down and becomes organic material. The material has to beremoved so the grass can breathe. I tell people it is like taking off your

sweater in the middle ofsummer.

I hope my Riviera Gazettecolumn will provide youwith answers andknowledge on theconditions of the golfcourse. I look forward tobeing your Director ofAgronomy for many yearsto come.
