RIVERTON PRIMARY CAMPUS 20 th June 2017 http://rivertonprimary.wa.edu.au/ PHONE 9457 2644 A Message from the Principals Our annual Bookfair concludes today, having been on since Friday. This fair has provided an opportunity for parents and their children to come in and purchase books and related material, with a portion of the money spent coming back to our campus to use to purchase more resources for the library. If you have any queries, please ring the school. I was encouraging to see a number of parents and their children at the fair. Thank you to Mrs Murphy for her organisation, and planning for the event, and to those teachers and others who helped her out where required. Finally, thank you to the parents and students who purchased items. I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Riverton Primary Campus choir’s performance as part of the Children Sing Festival, held in the Octagon Theatre at the University of Western Australia on Tuesday. Enthusiastic, well- rehearsed and looking great, our students sang beautifully, performing “My Island Home” and “Ain’t No Sunshine” to the assembled crowd, accompanied beautifully by our two student pianists, Janelle Lee and Huimin Liu. I was particularly impressed and the students should all be very proud of their efforts. Thank you to Mr Davey for all his preparatory work and conducting on the day, and to the parents who were able to attend. Our kindergarten students hosted the AWCH incursions to Riverton last week. Having learnt about hospitals, health and related concepts, our students have really benefitted from the visits. Thank you to Mrs Frossos for the organisation and the teachers for their work. Visits like this are both purposeful and meaningful to children as they widen their understanding of this important area. Our Year 6 students were again visited from teachers from the Constitutional Centre on Thursday, having sessions on our government, the rule of law and elections. Thanks to the Year 6 teachers for organising these important events that serve to consolidate and contribute to the HASS curriculum area. We have a strong and vibrant Japanese language program here at the campus and, as a result, we are sometimes able to provide excursions or incursions from those connected to this learning area. Last week we were fortunate enough to be visited by a performing artist from Hokkaido in Japan who entertained our students on Wednesday with traditional songs, using the traditional Japanese instruments, providing our students with another glimpse of traditional Japanese music and culture. Moreover, the students were then able to complete some Japanese art in their classes with our guest. Thank you to Ms. Hall (sensei) for her organisation and to our teachers for their support. Traditional Fairy Tales with interesting twists and modern adaptations are often the subject of the items presented by classes at our weekly assemblies and last week’s Junior Assembly was no exception. The enthusiastic students from Rooms 1 and 10 performed a wonderful play about the Three Little Pigs with a far more compassionate wolf than the original tale! It was very funny and it was performed with enthusiasm and skill by our talented and excited students. Congratulations to them and thank you to Mrs Ellery, Mrs Boyling and the education assistants for their hard work. I would also like to thank and acknowledge the Award winners from the assembly. Our students played well again in the Eagles Cup against Caralee PS last Friday, with our competitors enjoying the event and performing well, with pleasing results. Riverton won the football, won the soccer and achieved a win and a loss at netball. Under clear blue skies and a warm sun, it was wonderful to again watch the games played at our home base, particularly on the brilliant new courts. Thank you to those parents who were able to come along and support the teams. I would also like to acknowledge and to thank Mr Brooks, Mrs London, Mrs West, Mrs Giles, Mr Smeed, Mrs Hares and Mr Ellis for their work coaching, umpiring and helping with the teams. Our annual Faction Cross Country event is on tomorrow and I would like to wish all our participants the best of luck. The students have been practising hard for a while now and I am sure they are all keen to do well. I have no doubt that some parents will be able to come along and support the children, and I thank them in advance for that. Thanks also to Mr Brooks for his work in preparing for the big event. Please also note that the first of our Edu Dance concerts will be on this week on Thursday (22 nd June) and I look forward to seeing friends and families at the event where our excited students will perform their act, having practised so hard throughout the term. Good luck to them all. Our final assembly for the term will be held on Friday 30th June at 9.00am and is set to be a busy one! The end of term awards will be presented to our students and people will also have the opportunity to meet members of our new School Board. In addition, our Year 6 Kidpreneur students will be displaying their wares and “businesses” in the corridors around the assembly area. Parents and visitors will get a chance to look at their displays straight after the assembly. Finally, one of our Year 5 students, Breen Doyle, who has been raising money for cancer research, will have his head shaved at the conclusion of the event. It should be a lot of fun and we look forward to seeing a large number of families and friends in attendance. Paul Grundy - Principal Riverton Primary School Vicki Sturgeon Principal Riverton ESC

Year 6 News

Riverton Public Library Mural This term the Year 6 class from Room 22 have been working with artist Samantha Hughes at the Riverton Public Library producing a wall mural. The Year 6 group went on an excursion to CREEC to look at the natural local environment for art ideas. They have also completed two workshops in drawing and painting and next week they will begin to paint the mural over at the library. The mural will be officially opened on Wednesday 28

th

June at 10.00am at the Riverton Public Library and parents are invited to attend.

Riverton Leisureplex Art Project The Year 6 class from Room 21 had an input into art ideas for the Leisureplex Art Project and worked with artist Matt McVeigh in an art workshop here at Riverton Primary. The final installation is now complete so if you are at the Leisureplex please take the time to look at the amazing artwork.

Kidpreneur businesses The Year 6 students have been working on businesses. Our Kidpreneur businesses will launch on the 30

th June. We would like to invite you to the

market. The businesses include Ben and Lagan’s, Hosi’s and Jiggas’s Thai Kitchen, Oritopia, Alboe and many more. Students may bring money to buy food and other cool things at the market. We have put our time and effort into making these products with a little help from friends! Maker Kids is a program that encourages kids to start their own businesses. This is what has motivated Riverton Students to sell products of their own.

Music News

On 13th June the Riverton P.S. Choir went on an excursion to the Octagon Theatre U.W.A. to perform in the 2017 Children Sing Festival.

All choir members performed excellently in front of a full Octagon Theatre and were able to watch performances from 5 other schools.

We were particularly fortunate as we had two of our own choir members accompany us on the Grand Piano. Huimin Liu and Janelle Lee were outstanding and were the only students from any school to do so.

After our performance we went to Kings Park for a picnic and run around and managed to get back to school by 3pm.

Next term we will be performing at Crown Theatre Burswood.
