• 2nd – for group discussion. They will commit to giving us a special price if we want to play there once a month. Their normal fee is $39 but we can get a rate of $25 if we let them know ahead of time. We do not have to guarantee a mini-mum number of players and we can opt out of any month we choose. We can play either Satur-day or Sunday. This time of the year, our earliest tee time will be around 2pm. Later on, it will be earlier to assure we complete the rounds before dark.

Greater Hickory Classic Volunteers for the Senior PGA event at Rock Born Golf & Spa, August 16-22, were Charlene (Marshal), Dana (Marshal), Bill S. (Marshal), Bill L . (Carts, Shuttles, Marshal), and Judy (Scorer's Tent). For $55, volunteers received shirts, hats/caps, and pouches; on-site parking, free admis-sion all week, free meal(s) and bever-ages on the day(s) volunteering, a pre-tournament dinner/raffle at the Hickory Metro Con-vention Center, and a free round of golf at Rock Barn (if volunteering for 3 or more days). With weather ranging any-where from the high 90's to the low 80's, the tournament proved, once again, to be nothing less than spectacular. The suspense hung in the balance right down to the final putt, with Doug Tewell "nailing" a twelve-foot putt for birdie to maintain his one-point mar-gin over Bruce Fleisher. The volunteers were in agreement that good food, good fun, and GOOD GOLF prevailed and are looking forward to participating in the event for at least the

next two years, during which time Rock Barn is under contract with the Senior PGA. Next year's tournament will be held in early October.

Future Monthly Meeting Sites The location of each monthly meeting will be determined by the ASGA member, who is scheduling golf for that particular month. (Please see the Hickory ASGA Schedule in the newsletter.) All meetings will be held at 6:30 pm on the second Thursday of each month, unless other-wise notified. At this time, these locations have been selected: September........Lib (Oyster Bar/Ramada Inn)

August Saturday Golf Outing Thanks to Peggy, who scheduled twelve members/guests to play at Silver Creek near Morganton on Saturday, Au-gust 14, 2004; however, due to heavy

rains, which were predicted as the aftermath of Hurricane Charley, the golf outing was cancelled on Friday of that week. In lieu of the regularly sched-uled Saturday golf, Bill L . scheduled golf on Saturday,

August 28, 2004, at Rivercrest for $25 per person at 3:00 pm. Results of this event were not available at the time of this writing. Coming soon! Members and guests would like to thank Bill L. for re-scheduling the Saturday golf.

August Sunday Golf Outing Members were urged to get a partner and play in the Couples Tournament at Brushy Mountain Golf Club at 1:30 pm for $25 per couple. However, this event was cancelled by Brushy Mountain due to the lack of participation. (Many golfers were involved with volunteering/attending the volunteer dinner for the Greater Hickory Classic at the Hickory Metro Convention Center. Instead, as a different option, members

have been notified of the Couples Tour-nament/Dinner on Sunday, August 29, 2004, at Rivercrest Golf Club for $35 per person. ASGA members, who are inter-ested in participating, should contact the club and sign up with an opposite-sex partner (828) 495-0017.

It also features out-standing play - such as holes-in-one; and, gives ideas for increasing member-ship. Check it out!

Please give sup-port to our chapter by attending the meet-ing and warmly welcoming our guests. Have a great Labor Day holiday week-end!

Ben Hogan Ben Hogan always had a laser-like approach to problem solving. He believed in breaking the problem down to its sim-plest form. Late in 1992 he sat down for lunch with one of his greatest admirers, Nick Faldo, who had recently won his third British Open. Both men realized they had similar attitudes to hard work, prac-tice and determination. For his part, Faldo was fascinated by Hogan. He found him-self in total agreement with everything the Hawk said. At one point during lunch, Faldo asked Hogan for any advice he might have on how to win the US Open. Hogan re-mained silent. As their meeting was about to end, Faldo again asked if there was one secret that could help him win that elusive US Open. “Shoot lower scores,” responded the great champion.
