Riverbay Association Newsletter -- Spring, 2012
A short message from the “prez”
Here we are again—having survived another winter
and looking forward once again to a Chatham
summer. Many of you were away for the winter
but some of “us”, as you can see below, stayed put
right here in
Riverbay for
the quiet
season— a
non-winter
this year.
Amidst
Riverbay
peace and quiet, many residents remained active
in Town government, the business community, and
in the Chatham schools, churches, and various civic
organizations. So, welcome back to all who left for
the winter or some part thereof.
As Chatham turns 300 this year, Riverbay hits the
#50 marker. Town records indicate building began
here in the ‘hood after August, 1962. To celebrate
both of these very significant anniversaries, the
Riverbay Association is sponsoring a motorcade in
the famous Chatham 4th of July parade. Several
Riverbay residents, owners of some very beautiful
antique and classic cars, will participate.
Additionally, the Association will host the annual
picnic here in Riverbay proper on August 4th. See
pg. 3 for more details—please mark those dates.
In closing, this will be my 4th and final year serving
as President of the Riverbay Association. I have
had the pleasure of working with some wonderful
people who have given me much support over the
past few years, but listing individual names would
fill the newsletter. I say THANK YOU to all of the
Riverbay Beautification Committee planners &
workers, Plant Swap Day table mates, Riverbay
mail “dream team”, our own “Betsey Ross” team,
Riverbay.org ad hoc committee members ,
flagpole/entrance sign maintenance team,
irrigation liaison support, Riverbay Picnic helpers,
our Adopt-a-Corner sponsors, resident water
donors , and especially, to my husband, Ted, the 1st
man of Riverbay. My sincere gratitude is also
extended to all of those who have served with me
on the Riverbay Executive Board since 2008,
including Al Brier, Bill Burley, Jean Carey, Judy
Chesley, Jack Farrell, Sal Gionfriddo, Audrey Gray,
Eric Hartell Ron Holmes, Harry Howard, Andrew
McClennen, Blanche MacMullan, Tom Patton, John
Randall, Ann Reydel, Christie Turner, and Jean
Zilliox Thank you so very much to all of you!

Joint Celebration : Riverbay’s 50th Chatham’s 300th

Riverbay is just a “young’un” compared to the Town of Chatham, but there is
much history in our neighborhood preceding 1712. The Monomoyick Indians inhabited this region as
well as parts of Harwich and Orleans. The Monomoyicks traveled thru this area, now Riverbay, to
reach the Muddy River (aka Muddy Creek or the Monomoyick or Monomoy River) for fishing and
shell fishing. So, in some ways there is just as much, if not more, history here in our area as in the
“olde village” but in a different way. People often ask , “Why so many Indian names of Riverbay
roadways?” Well. now you know the rest of the story.…
Two events planned to celebrate the dual birthdays: [1] Annual Association Picnic with the
“longest picnic” table in Chatham. World record: 305 ft. Our goal: just 100 ft. [2] Riverbay’s “Century
of Cars” will be first in the 20th century section of the Chatham parade. As the decades moved on and
the Cape economy became more tourist based, the visitors to Chatham began to come via…..
