The WICPA Education Foundation, Inc. awarded the business department a 2017 WICPA Accounting Careers Awareness Grant for a proposal for FBLA students to attend a trip to the March 26 Milwaukee Bucks vs. Bulls game to attend a game and learn about accounting in the professional sports industry. FBLA State Qualifiers will be attending the State Leadership Conference on April 2-4 in Appleton. State competitors include; Bea Mumm, Rebecca Breuer, Taylor Linder, Maria Breuer, Brooklyn Parker, Travis Jelinek, Jake Breuer, Jonathan Breuer, Bayli Mason, Ryan West, Dan Kerscher, Chloe Stagman, and Josh Remis. These students will com-pete in their event, attend workshops, field trips to local businesses and work on networking skills while attending social events. The students who place in the top three in their event will qualify for the National Leadership Conference being held in Anaheim, CA.

Grades 5 & 6 to Move in November

The new middle school wing at Patch Grove will be ready for students in Novem-ber of 2017. The RRSD School Board has designated November 16-26 as the period for moving supplies and equipment from the Upper Elementary to the new middle school. Students in grades 4K-12 will be out of school November 16-26. Classes for all grades will resume Monday, November 27.

We’re very pleased with Kraemer Brothers and our geotechnical engineers on work they’ve done to identify and address issues which will result in a better con-struction product.

On the recommendation of Kraemer Brothers, the Board opted to re-route the water main coming into the school. This is so the main can be accessed from outside the building in the event of any future problems with the main.

Working with the geotechnical engineers, Kraemer Brothers identified severe compaction of the soils on the south side of the 2001 addition to the Patch Grove building. To compensate for the soil compaction issues, Kraemer Brothers will install a truss girder between the 2001 and 2017 construction.

As with any construction/remodeling project, there are likely to be more discover-ies and modifications along the way. Meanwhile, we’ve been fortunate to have many good weather days and the project is proceeding on schedule.

River Ridge Athletic Boosters would like to thank Abbi Schlueter for our new logo. A few of the Art Club stu-dents submitted a design. Abbi’s logo was chosen and she received a $25.00 gift certificate to Cenex.

This year, Ms. Moser and Ms. Ellis in the high school math department held a couple contests to celebrate Pi Day. Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. The first contest was a Pi Pictogram Contest in which students had to use pic-tures to represent a phrase that included pi. First place winner was Azel Johnson with “turkey pot ‘pi’”, and second place was Olivia Loper with “you are ‘acute tea pi.’” The other contest asked students to memorize and recite as many digits of pi as they could. We had three brave volunteers to recite in front of the student body. Third place was Cecil Callahan with 10 digits, second place was Skylar White with 49 digits, and first place was Alexis Morris with an astounding 291 digits! Now that’s a lot of pi!

On March 10, the Heavenly Hats Foundation held its annual Hat Parade and schools all across the country participated in this event. The River Ridge High School Student Council decided to donate one dollar for every student in grades 7-12 who wore a hat to school on that day. The money is donated to the Heavenly Hat Foundation and will be used to buy hats for people who have suffered from hair loss due to cancer treatments or another disease. We would like to thank all of those who wore hats, we were able to donate $73.00 to this cause.

Sixth Graders Celebrate Pi (Pie) Day by Heidi Serres

The 6th grade students researched interesting facts about Pi after using it to figure the area and circumference of circles. They shared their knowledge of Pi with relatives while enjoying pie and drinks. River Ridge Pi Day was celebrated on 3-14 at 1:59:26. Thank you to all who donated the delicious pies and to all who at-tended. We had a great time cel-ebrating Math!

“We’re Alike, We’re Different” was the character theme celebrated at River Ridge Elementary in the month of February. Students partnered with a student from a dif-ferent grade level to find out what they had in common through a heart shaped Venn diagram. Students and staff also wore their crazy mismatched socks one Fri-day to show how we’re all different and unique. At the end of the month students gathered for our character as-sembly where Dr. Athey, our elementary principal and superintendent, read the book “It’s Okay to be Differ-ent”. In January, River Ridge students were invited to compete in the Wis-consin Knights of Columbus “Knowledge” Contest. Students from Riv-er Ridge competed in the local contest with students from St. Mary’s School in Bloomington, Cassville Public School, and St. Charles School in Cassville. Six River Ridge 7th and 8th grade students received awards in this competition. They are from left: Samuel Reuter, 1st Place -7th Grade Math; Seth Breuer, 2nd Place - 7th Grade Math; and David Nies, 3rd Place – 7th Grade Math; Tori Doll, 2nd Place - 7th Grade Spell-ing; Kaycee Esser, 2nd Place-8th Grade Spelling; and Gavin Esser, 3rd Place -8th Grade Math. Samuel Reuter who received 1st Place in Math also qualified to compete in the Diocesan Competition, which was held on Saturday, March 4th, in Sauk City, WI. tional Speaking Contest in Argyle. Kendra placed 3rd overall in FFA Creed Speaker and was recognized for her achievement. Bea Mumm placed third in the FFA Discussion meet. Also, she advanced to the state in lev-el in the FFA Job Interview contest.

Congratulations also to Matt Walz and Dillin Meier for doing FFA Extemporaneous Speaking at the District Level at Platteville.

The River Ridge School District is offering a total of six summer stu-dent worker positions. These will be General Maintenance Assistant and District Office Assistant positions. The work is performed from June 5 through August 25, 2017. The positions provide approximately 25 to 32 hours per week, and the salary range is $8.00 - $9.00 per hour. The salary rate will be ad-justed if necessary when mini-mum wage rates change. Selec-tion criteria are as follows:

* Must be a River Ridge High School Graduate * Must be enrolled in a college, university or technical college * Must be 18 years of age or older * Must be able to learn to operate the necessary equipment and tools * Should be trustworthy and have a genuine interest in the job * Must have dependable transpor-tation to and from the work site

If the District is unable to fill the positions with applicants who meet these criteria, other interest-ed applicants may be considered. Interested candidates should sub-mit resumes and letters of interest to Kevin Kocer, Business Manag-er, by May 16, 2017. Please state within the letter which position you are applying for and which university, college or technical college you are enrolled in.

It’s hard to believe the final eight weeks of school is upon us! The con-sumer math students have completed the unit on managing expenses and are beginning a unit on making financial decisions. We are looking for-ward to having Michael Higgins from People’s State Bank join the class for discussion about finances.

The Algebra A students are working hard to become proficient writing lin-ear equations. Linear equations are used in the workplace; for example, construction, insurance, or surveying, and have many real world connec-tions and applications. We observe the use of these equations when read-ing graphs and analyzing data.

In geometry, students completed a couple chapters working with proofs, one of the more difficult concepts of the course. They deserve a high five for persevering to the finish! There were many sighs of relief when we started the chapter on perimeter and area.

The pre-calculus class is working on the statistics and probability portion of the course. They are doing many investigations involving the use of ob-servational studies, surveys, and experiments. This great group of students makes for a lively discussion! Ask them about the hand washing study completed by Harris Interactive.

The Wall of Fame in my room has many pictures of successful students. I recently took the picture of a student who proclaimed her goal of “get-ting up on the wall” had been fulfilled! You are welcome to step into our classroom anytime to take a look.

Moser’s Math Minutes STUDENT SUMMER WORK

Sixth graders have written several types of writings this year. Students were able to submit two of their writings to state competitions. For the “Dream Career” essay students wrote a 400-500 word essay about their future jobs. This pushed them to think about their education, career, and got them doing some research on facts about their job.

Anthony D. won the “Dream Career” middle school essay contest sponsored by the publication Teaching Today Wisconsin. His essay was about becoming a professional NFL player and looking up to Cam Newton as a role model. He emphasized his desire to be a role model for the “Youth of America”. He wrote about helping others by creat-ing a charity called “Anthony’s Kids of America” to help cancer patients and also assist football programs in small schools. His essay was published in the Winter 2017, Vol. 1 issue of the newspaper and Anthony received $100 and a certificate.

The second state contest challenged students to write and illustrate their own picture book. In the process of creat-ing picture books, sixth grade students read picture books and found themes that helped them come up with ideas. Before students made the picture books, they determined a theme, plot, setting, and characters. Students were focused on writing 600 to 1000 words and using dialogue for their stories. Students typed their own rough draft of the text. Then they sketched illustrations in art class or found pictures on the Internet. The students had their stories proofread by peers, parents, grandparents, and teachers to improve. Once they were done with their rough drafts students put their stories in a hardcover Bare Book to submit to the contest.

Payton M. won first for her book in the Literary and Illustration at the Mu Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Literary Competition. She illustrated using colored pencils in the picture book entitled, “It’s a Miracle”. Her story has strong themes about the importance of family and not giving up hope to eventually persevere. Her main character is a young mom who becomes paralyzed in an accident and later walks again. Her book will be honored at a banquet on May 1st at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. She can invite four guests and her teacher for a dinner banquet. There we will meet

the other winning authors and hear their stories. Her book has been sent onto the state level for continued judging and we will be awaiting any further announcements in late April.

In conclusion, our sixth graders worked really hard on these writings. They are all proud of their writing accom-plishments, and having state winners is a bonus. We were lucky to have a sixth grader win in each contest!

You may apply for open enrollment from February 6-April 28, 2017

What is Public School Open Enrollment? Wisconsin’s inter-district public school open enrollment program allows parents to apply for their children to attend school districts other than the one in which they live. Applications may be submitted to up to three nonresident school districts.

Who may participate in open enrollment? Pupils in 5-year-old kindergarten to grade 12 may apply to participate in open enrollment.

Open enrollment for prekindergarten, 4-year-old kindergarten and early childhood education is limited. Parents should call their resident school districts to find out if their preschool-aged children qualify for open enrollment.

How and when may parents apply? The open enrollment application period for the 2017-18 school year is from February 6-April 28, 2017. The application period closes at 4:00 p.m. on April 28, 2017. Late applications will not be accepted for any reason.

Parents may apply online at http://dpi.wi.gov/oe.

Can I apply to a virtual charter school under open enrollment? A pupil may only open enroll to an online/virtual school if: (1) the school has been created as a virtual charter school that meets the requirements of the charter school law [Wis. Stats. 118.40 (8)] or (2) the pupil is required to physically attend school in the nonresident school district every day that school is in session. Other important things to know about applying to virtual charter schools:

A virtual charter school is not homeschooling. Pupils attending virtual charter schools are public school pupils.

You must know the nonresident school district in which the virtual charter school is located. If you have any questions about this, call the virtual charter school.

You must know your resident school district in order to apply.

A list of 2016-17 virtual charter schools may be found at this webpage.

Can an application be rejected? Yes. Nonresident school districts may deny an application if regular or special education space is not available for the pupil; special education or related services are not available; or if the pupil has been referred for a special education evaluation but has not yet been evaluated. Nonresident school districts may also deny an application if the pupil has been expelled during the current or preceding two years for certain violent conduct or if the pupil was habitually truant from the nonresident school district during any semester in the current or previous school year.

If there are more applications than spaces, pupils must be selected randomly, after giving preference to pupils already attending school in the nonresident school district and siblings of currently-attending pupils.

Some school districts establish waiting lists to fill unused spaces, but others do not.

Can a resident district prevent a pupil from leaving? Yes, in limited circumstances. A resident district can deny a pupil’s application for an invalid application (early or late application or missing information), ineligibility due to age (too young or too old), or if the resident district does not offer the same type of prekindergarten, four-year-old

kindergarten, or early childhood program as the nonresident district or the pupil is not eligible for the program in the resident district. These are also reasons that a nonresident district can deny an application.

Can parents appeal if an application is denied? Parents whose applications are denied may appeal to the DPI within 30 days of the denial. State law requires the DPI to uphold the school district’s decision unless DPI finds that the decision was arbitrary or unreasonable. The DPI’s decision may be appealed to circuit court.

Must pupils reapply every year? Once a pupil is accepted into a nonresident school district, the pupil may continue to attend that district without reapplication except that:

The nonresident district may require a pupil to reapply one time—at the beginning of middle school, junior high or high school.

A pupil may be returned to the resident school district if the special education required in a new or revised IEP is not available in the nonresident district or there is no space.

A pupil who has become habitually truant in the nonresident district may be returned to the resident district.

Is there a cost to parents for open enrollment? There is no tuition cost to parents for participation in open enrollment. Parents of open enrolled pupils may be charged the same fees as resident pupils.

APPROVED MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL SCHOOL BOARD MEETING OF THE RIVER RIDGE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF THE RIVER RIDGE SCHOOL DISTRICT, GRANT COUNTY, WISCONSIN: FEBUARY 8, 2017 AT 1:30 PMI. Call to order – Board president Kenny Nies called the meeting to order at 1:36 PM

II. Roll Call – Present: Cory Moravits, Jason Cathman, Cory Raisbeck, Kenny Nies. Absent: Kerri Schier, Dave Breuer.

III. Pledge of Allegiance – No flag was present. The pledge was not recited.

IV. Statement of Notice – Cory Moravits presented proof of posting on February 1, 2017 at 2:00 pm. Cory Raisbeck made a motion to approve the posting. Jason Cathman sec-onded the motion and it passed on a voice vote.

V. Appearances – There were no public appearances.

VI. Bid Opening at Kraemer Brothers Construction in Plain, WI. - Greg Callin and Mitch Gilbertson gave a short overview of the work and planning that led to today’s second bid opening. Mitch Gilbertson explained how the bidding process works. The following bids were received:

Cory Moravits made a motion to approve the financial report, pending the audit of 2016/17, for revenues of $1,048,588.20 and expen-ditures of $738,818.60. Kerri Schier seconded the motion and it passed on a 4-0 roll call vote.ii. Approve Engagement Agreement with Quarles & Brady LLP for Bond Counsel and Disclosure Counsel – Kerri Schier made a motion to approve engagement agreement with Quarles & Brady LLP for bond counsel and disclosure counsel. Jason Cathman seconded the motion and it passed on a 4-0 roll call vote.iii. Resolution Awarding the Sale of $9,500,000 General Obligation Corporate Purpose Bonds – Jason Cathman made a motion to approve the resolution awarding the sale of $9,500,000 General Obligation Corporate Purpose Bonds to Northland Securities. Cory Moravits seconded the motion and

it passed on a 4-0 roll call vote.iv. Resolution to Establish Account with the Local Government Investment Pool for Bond Proceeds – Cory Moravits made a motion to approve the resolution to establish an account with the local government investment pool for bond proceeds. i. 321 ANNUAL SCHOOL CALENDAR and School Hours – Jason Cathman made a motion to approve the 2nd reading of the 321 Annual School Calendar and School Hours replacement policy. Kerri Schier seconded the motion and it passed on a voice vote.ii. 760 FOOD SERVICE MANAGEMENT – Cory Moravits made a motion to approve the 2nd read-ing of the 760 Food Service Management replace-ment policy. E. Technology Committee – School Superinten-dent Dr. Jeff Athey gave a report on the February 7, 2017 meeting.

VIII. Old BusinessA. School Board Vacancy – Date for Interviews

and Selection. President Nies noted that three indi-viduals have applied to fill a board vacancy created by the resignation of Emilie Mumm: Chad Breuer, Melissa Cornwell, and Adam Guthrie. The date for interviews and selection was set for March 1, 2017 at 6:00 PM

VI. Guaranteed Maximum Price – Greg Callin from Kraemer Brothers gave a review of the budget and a guaranteed maximum budget of $9,400,000.00 on the referendum project. Cory Moravits made a mo-tion to allow Kraemer Brothers to continue the refer-endum project with a guaranteed maximum price of $9,400,000.00. Jason Cathman seconded the motion and it passed on a 5-0 roll call vote.

VII. Consideration of and action on a resolution authorizing and approving the purchase of real estate – Cory Raisbeck approved the resolution authorizing and approving the purchase of 37,485 square feet of land along the east boundary of the property for the price of $10,028.00. Jason Cathman seconded the mo-tion and it passed on a 5-0 roll call vote.

VIII. Consideration of and action on approving a temporary use agreement for real estate prior to ac-quisition – Cory Raisbeck made a motion to approve the temporary use agreement for real estate prior to acquisition. The motion was seconded by Kerri Schier and it passed on a 5-0 roll call vote.
