YOUR MEMBERSHIP MATTERS
Walt Disney once said, “You can dream, create, design, and build
the most wonderful place in the world, but it requires people to
make the dream a reality.” I feel safe saying that Walt’s dream is
indeed a reality. We can use this same thinking in NAWIC. We
know that the success of our organization lies within our
membership. Our members can contribute in many ways; whether
it is serving on the board of directors, attending an event or
monthly meeting. Every member indeed serves a purpose and for
that I want to say thank you.
To continue our chapter’s growth and success, I would challenge
our membership to reach out to both members and non-members.
Discuss/connect with each other how NAWIC can impact your
workplace and our community.
Some questions you might consider – “What would you like to
accomplish this year? What would you like to see continue?
Conversely, what would you like to see change? How can we serve
our membership and community better? Please feel free to reach
out to me or any board member at any time with suggestions or
concerns. I know that with our diverse membership we can
continue to grow and be successful. Let’s make it a reality!
I leave you with this thought as we approach the holidays.
Christmas is not so much about opening presents, as opening our
hearts!

Who brought you to NAWIC?
Mickey Jennings when we worked together at
Hourigan Construction
Why did you join NAWIC? I joined NAWIC
for networking opportunities and to become a more
self-confident individual. I realize I have a voice – thanks to NAWIC. I love the camaraderie and
“sisterhood” that NAWIC offers.
What is your history in our chapter, including
positions held? President (2015-2017) Newsletter Chair (current and 2008 – 2011) Served at every board position with the exception of Treasurer Chaired PR & Marketing and Roster (current), Secret Pals, Friendship
Company: Boynton▪Rothschild▪Rowland Architects PC
Office Administrator ▪ 2 Years
Responsibilities: I do just about everything at BRR (with the exception of the actual architecture, design and project management) – from invoices, time sheets, accounts receivables and payables, marketing, correspondence, specification writing, receptionist, etc. We only have 3 employees – 2 principal architects and myself.
COMPANY BIO Boynton▪Rothschild▪Rowland ArchitectsPC is a successor firm of 5 architectural firms dating back to 1904. BRR Architects PC and its predecessor firms have specialized in client satisfaction for many commission types over the past 100 years. The firm has built an exemplary reputation based upon design expertise and technological excellence in educational (secondary and higher education), institutional, cultural, sports, historic renovation, historic restoration, forensic investigations, and special use projects. The firm offers a full range of architectural services - master planning, programming, conceptual design, space planning and interior design, project management, and construction administration.
Previous employers, title, responsibilities, and length of time with company: I have worked in the A/E/C industry since 1987. I started in the industry working at United Virginia Bank in their Interior Design / Architectural Department. Along the way I became interested in the marketing aspect at the various firms as a Marketing Coordinator – preparing proposals, advertisements, brochures, etc.
PERSONAL BIO Where were you born? Lexington, Virginia – moved to Richmond in 1981 after graduating from college. Education: BA in Fine Arts with a concentration in Commercial Graphics from Bridgewater College. I also have a Career Studies Certificate in Interior Design from J. One daughter lives in Farmville and the other is currently in Elgin, Oklahoma (her husband is in the Army). If you follow me on Facebook, you know them well. Anyone who knows me understand I have a passion for my southern heritage.

WAYS & MEANS: Golf Tournament
REMINDER: The Early Bird Corporate
Sponsorship deadline is January 31, 2018
THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Donley’s and Fast Glass for
stepping up as our first two Early Bird Corporate Sponsors!
We still have a lot of work to do to set up our Golf Tournament and our
Chapter for a successful year. The Early Bird Corporate Sponsor Form is
attached to this newsletter and we need your help spreading the word! Please
send it to your employer or any industry contacts you may have and ask if
they would consider becoming a 2018 Corporate Sponsor for our Golf
Tournament. The personal contact from you makes all the
difference in the world in recruiting sponsors - a simple
email, phone call, or asking in person will help us reach our goal!
The NAWIC Golf Tournament is our only chapter fundraiser and will be
Thursday, May 3rd 2018 at Hunting Hawk Golf Course in Glen Allen, VA.
Proceeds from the Golf Tournament go to our NAWIC operational costs,
educational programs, and provides the funds for the Scholarships we give out
each year to students pursuing construction. The Corporate Sponsorship is
$2,000 and includes a foursome and advertising prominently throughout our
Golf Tournament and the whole year.
Other sponsorship levels and foursome registration will be available in
February 2018. If you have any questions, please reach out to
A "pinch point" or "caught-in/between" is a common hazard on the
jobsite and has been identified by OSHA as a construction focus four. In
2015, the Bureau of Labor Statics reported 67 construction workers were
killed by caught-in/between hazards representing 7.2% of all construction
fatalities. So, what is a "pinch point" or "caught-in/between?" According to
OSHA, caught-in or between hazards are defined as: Injuries resulting from
a person being squeezed, caught, crushed, pinched, or compressed between
two or more objects. If a Team Member or any part of their body is
caught between two objects, there is a high probability of injuries such as
contusions, punctures, fractures, amputations, or even death. In
construction, pinch points are located all over the job site and it us up to
us to be aware of this common hazard.
Pinch Point Awareness. Common pinch points in construction
include, but are not limited to crane swing radiuses, elevated dump truck
beds, concrete truck chutes, material handling, and hand/power tools. Prior
to starting any task, you should review the jobsite for possible pinch points
and associated hazards. Additionally, you should be familiar with their
project Site Safety and Health Plan and associated Job Safety
Analysis/Activity Hazard Analysis for a given task. These tools provide
valuable insight on the potential hazards present at your jobsite and the
mitigation strategies associated with a task.
Protecting Against Pinch Points. If possible, pinch points
should be eliminated from a task as this is the safest means of protecting
you from the hazard. If the hazard cannot be eliminated, engineering
controls such as guarding shall be installed.
Your Responsibility. What can each of us do to avoid being
pinched caught-in/between while onsite or at home? First and foremost be
alert and aware of your surroundings and the potential hazards which
exist. No amount of engineering controls or personal protective equipment
can make up for lack of attention and understanding. Things we should be
trained and aware of include the following:
• Identification of potential pinch points before starting any task
• Ensuring all guards on equipment are in place and effective
• Always stay within the line of site of the equipment operator
• Never place yourself between mobile equipment and stationary objects
• Lockout tagout should always be confirmed before performing any work
on equipment
• Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment
• Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings
• Remember the most powerful tool in our arsenal rests on our shoulders.
By staying alert and being aware of the hazards present all issues can
be recognized and avoided without incident.
FRIENDSHIP
