THE RITE OF ORDINATION ELECTION OF THE CANDIDATES

After the candidates have been presented, the Bishop elects them for ordination. Applause is an appropriate sign of approval. HOMILY

The Bishop speaks to the candidates and to all assembled about the offices and duties of the deacon.

PROMISE OF THE ELECT Since the Deacon serves under the authority of the Bishop, the candidates pledge

obedience and respect to their Ordinary Bishop and the Bishop’s successors.

The candidates lie prostrate before the altar as a sign of their humble submission to God’s will and so that the assembly, in communion with all the saints, may pray for them.

The essence of the Sacrament of Holy Orders: the Bishop lays his hands upon the head of each candidate, an action which confers the Holy Spirit, and then prays the words of consecration.

IN GRATITUDE We give praise and thanksgiving on this joyous occasion to our Holy Father Pope Francis through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, and we humbly pray for the strengthening gifts of the Holy Spirit. We offer our heartfelt gratitude to all who have guided, encouraged, taught, challenged, counseled, and mentored us during our years of discernment in formation. We would like to thank Redemptoris Mater Seminary, our formators and catechists, especially Fr Roderick A. Crispo, OFM who returned to the Lord on September 30, after spending nearly 13 years as our Spiritual Director. We wish to thank St. John's Seminary, our instructors, formators and spiritual directors for all of your efforts that have led to this day and for your continued formation as we prepare for the priesthood.
