Adapted for ChildrenAges 8 - 15

The 4 Phases in the R.C.I.A for Children are:
•Inquiry PhaseChildren ask questions about the Catholicfaith, at the same time forming relationshipswith one another and the catechists.
•Catechumenate PhaseChildren study and reflect on the Catholicfaith.
•Purification & Enlightenment PhaseChildren continue to prepare themselves forthe Sacraments of Initiation at Easter Vigil.
•Mystagogia PhaseChildren reflect on the experience of Baptism,Confirmation and Communion by learninghow to make this a part of their daily livesand grow in faith.

R.C.I.A. for Children follows the Rite of ChristianInitiation of Adults, a process that offers thosewanting to become members of the church, theopportunity to learn more about the faith andteachings of the Catholic Church, at the sametime deepening their relationship with JesusChrist.
What do I need to prepare before RCIA begins?
-provide a copy of the child’s birthcertificate
- provide a copy of the Catholic parent’sbaptism certificate (unless one orboth of the parent’s are journeying inthe Adult RCIA also)
- Find a sponsor (male or female) who willjourney with the child throughout theR.C.I.A. and participate in the child’sCatholic faith & education throughouttheir life.
What is Rite of Christian Initiation?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults(R.C.I.A.) adapted for Children is a “Journey ofFaith” for children 8 – 15 years of age who areinquiring and seeking initiation into theCatholic Church.
This is for children who:
- Have not been baptized and wish to be fullyinitiated into the Catholic Church throughthe Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism,Confirmation and Communion.
- Were baptized as members of anotherChristian community and wish to beinitiated into the Catholic Church.
An interview will take place with the PastoralAssistant and parent(s) to determine how andwhen the child would complete theSacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmationand Communion.
Choosing a sponsor (godparent):
- Must be 16 years of or older- Have received the Sacraments of Initiation –
Baptism, Communion & Confirmation.- The sponsor is a Catholic Christian role
model and for this reason, must be living thelife of faith within the Roman CatholicChurch teachings.
- attends mass regularly.- supports the parent(s) in raising the child in
the Catholic faith.- Will be a companion to the child by
participating in all R.C.I.A. Rites, celebrations and events.
