Symbolism & Identity

Definitions

Symbolism is about using colours, icons, or pictures that represent something. Often symbols can have more than one meaning.

A heart may represent love.

The colour red may represent love, or anger.

Identity is all about what makes you unique. Think about things like:

Likes & dislikes Personality Culture & religion What you’re good at What other people like

about you

Symbolism & Identity

Rita Angus

Paintbrush, palette, and art tunic could represent art.

The two fish in the clouds might represent her star sign, Pisces.

The moon might represent peace.

Showing the green hills (country), and the grey buildings (city), might show that Rita Angus identifies with country life, and city life.

These are the Wellington Hills. This could show her identity as a New Zealander.

Remember, there are no right or wrong ideas. Symbols can mean different things to different people.

Characteristics SymbolsI like soccer. Soccer ball, soccer shoes, team logo, team

colours, soccer goal in background, you wearing soccer uniform.

I am good at writing. Book, pen or pencil, holding a book written by you (real or imaginary), words or quote in background.

Your SymbolsThink of symbols to represent the characteristics of your identity that you wrote down.

Try to think of more than one possible image, colour, or icon to represent each aspect of your identity. Be creative!

Here is an example to help you:

Use some of the symbols that you wrote down to

sketch your own self portrait that shows your identity. Try and show 2-3 characteristics.

For example, if you like soccer and writing, you could have a portrait of you in your soccer uniform, holding a book and a pen, with a soccer field & goal in the background.

Make 3-4 sketches that show different characteristics of your identity, or use different symbols. Then, you can choose which one you like best to create your portrait.
