MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Flood & Coast is our annual opportunity to bring together the organisations and groups who work collaboratively to reduce the risk from flooding and coastal erosion. When this wider community – the flood family – comes together we have the opportunity to learn from one another’s successes, discuss how to best to manage future challenges and continue to build ever stronger networks.

The Advisory Committee, made up of partners representing the flood family, has helped to shape and evolve the

direction of the programme so it meets all of our needs. We had a fabulous response to our call for speakers with over 350 proposals! As result we have excellent speakers from across industry, academia, public authorities and communities. We’ve included more interactive sessions with a focus on shaping the future. And our exhibition theatre will again offer the opportunity to hear from communities affected by flooding in their own words.

On the first day we will look at the theme of shared ownership and action. This will include examples of innovative partnership working, the latest evidence and modelling work and international learning. I am delighted that Jeff Lindner will join us from the USA to share his learning from Hurricane Harvey.

Day 2 will focus on building resilience, including dedicated sessions on property flood resilience, land-use planning, growth, coastal planning, and modern asset management. I look forward to fascinating insights from Baroness Brown, Chair of the Adaptation Sub-Committee on resilience and adaptation.

On Day 3 we will look at the global changes affecting the flood and coast

sector including climate change, skills challenges and the evolution of international partnerships after Brexit. Delegates will hear from John Curtin, the Environment Agency’s Executive Director of FCERM, reflecting on his experiences in the role and the future challenges and opportunities for the sector.

In addition to the formal conference programme we’ve included a number of events alongside focussed on supporting and growing skills and talent in our industry and celebrating successes. On the latter we will host the annual Project Excellence Awards at our conference dinner on the Wednesday evening. This is a great opportunity to recognise the range of partners and project teams that have contributed to improved flood resilience in the last year. I am confident that the stories you’ll hear will inspire future year’s entrants.

So finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank our speakers, exhibitors, sponsors, supporters and media partners – and all those who make this event happen.

I look forward to seeing you in Telford in March!

SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT

JEFF LINDNER, DIRECTOR HYDROLOGIC OPERATIONS DIVISION / METEOROLOGIST, HARRIS COUNTY FLOOD CONTROL DISTRICT HOUSTON, TEXAS

As Tropical Storm Harvey battered the greater Houston area in August 2017, Jeff Lindner, meteorologist for the Harris County Flood Control District played a central role in keeping communities informed through the steady and straightforward sharing of flood data.

To the multitudes worrying about whether floodwaters were inching closer to their homes, Jeff tirelessly updated millions via televised news conferences and Twitter posts about rising water levels in bayous and reservoirs. His calm communications kept whole communities informed about whether they should leave their properties, avoiding the need for thousands of emergency evacuations.

We consult-deliver-manage, allowing us to develop solutions at any stage in a project life-cycle. Our asset management and digital expertise helps clients develop real-time performance-based asset management programmes, leading to identification of critical assets and significant savings in reactive maintenance. The application of this experience in flood risk management will support the Environment Agency to be a recognised leader in asset and incident management.
