Technological Expert’s Group Supporting Japan’s Information and Telecommunications Infrastructure

The telecommunication and information systems divisions of NTT became independent and established NTT COMWARE in April of 1997. We are, in essence, the group of technological experts that has supported the information and telecommunications infrastructure in Japan, through activities ranging from the development to the operation of NTT’s world-leading core corporate system and network systems. NTT COMWARE inherited the DNA and culture of such technological developments as technological assets and has expanded on them. This technological prowess is characterized by the following three points.

■ Communication NetworksWe offer a wide range of services including NTT’s voice, data and image communication services, as well as the planning, development, operation and maintenance of rapidly evolving large-scale networks that support those services. We also help bolster the “reliability”, “quality” and “stability” associated with the NTT brand through our proven technological expertise including the planning and development of middleware and applications that coordinate and integrate the platforms that support the myriad of available services.

■ Backbone SystemsWe offer total support for mission-critical*1 database systems, from planning and development to the operation and maintenance of NTT’s customer database which includes some 60 million subscribers. And through detailed consulting based on our abundant experience, we are able to coordinate with a wide range of vendors to propose the latest open-architecture based multi-platform*2 systems, and combine the optimum hardware to build flexible and strategic systems.

■ Business Management and Operation Support SystemsWe built the corporate business management and operation support system for the NTT group which includes everything from accounting, personnel affairs and payroll, to training, education and benefit programs. These integrated system solutions are also being used to promote the personnel and wage restructuring of NTT group’s 137 companies and 210,000 employees.

*1 Mission-critical: Business requiring uninterrupted operation 24/7, and computer system used to provide such 24/7 services.

*2 Open-architecture multi-platform: Application software that supports more than one OS. Also, an OS that supports numerous hardware. A multi-platform network is one that allows different types of computers to coexist within the same network.

Inherited and Evolved Technological Assets are Our DNA

Responding to System Issues Demanded by Management

In order to effectively meet the needs of a rapidly changing business environment, firms will need to optimize their entire businesses. NTT COMWARE envisions its system architecture by charting the ideal business process from both the management and operation sides, enabling us to propose systems that are directly linked to your management strategies, and help to reduce TCO*1.

■ Network Integration to make new communications possibleNTT COMWARE boasts top-class technological expertise in Japan in terms of next generation network development and connectivity, as well as assured stability, with an eye toward broadband and ubiquitous*2 services. We provide optimum solutions geared toward the unique and varying requirements of our customers, such as creating a system which enables access to the enormous wide selection of content being streamed over IP networks, through an all-IP environment in which hardware from numerous different vendors is interlinked and pre-existing equipment can continue to be effectively used.

■ System Integration to generate new value for the customerNTT COMWARE offers the optimum solution from the viewpoint of the total system. Systems are built in partnership with the customer, with full understanding of the unique issues associated with different business categories such as public sector, telecommunication, financial, distribution and manufacturing, as well as different job categories such as accounting, personnel, production and logistics. From packaged to fully customized, we provide customers with new value based on our solid technological expertise and professional services.

■ Outsourcing Service with high quality and detailed follow-throughStemming from the desire to concentrate on their main line of business, more and more firms are outsourcing their operations management and asset management duties, and in an effort to provide reliable service 24/7, the trend toward outsourcing IT operations is also on the rise. NTT COMWARE has an abundant track record of offering support services including a secure data center, network operations and maintenance, and help desk. Through them we can support your mission-critical services, and offer high quality, fine-tuned services as your reliable outsourcer.

*1 Total Cost of Ownership: Total cost involved in procuring, operating and maintaining a computer system.

*2 Ubiquitous: Stress-less networking and computing environment in which information products such as personal computers, mobile phones and PDAs, as well as game machines, digital home appliances, car navigation systems, and multimedia terminals installed at convenience stores, are all linked by network for use “anytime, anywhere, by anyone”.

Supporting Your Business through Overall Optimization

A leader in open-source software*1

Open-source software, as exemplified by Linux*2, makes the author’s source code available to the public so it can be freely modified and distributed. As such, it is receiving worldwide attention as a vehicle that opens the way to user-initiative systems rather than vendor-initiative, and in Japan where it could generate a new trend in the IT sector, it is regarded as a high priority topic. NTT COMWARE established its Linux Center in 1999, and was among the first in the IT sector to actively engage in open-source development and dissemination. Since then we have become one of the pioneers in this field, building large-scale backbone systems based on Linux migration*3 and extensive research ranging from Linux for servers to middleware. And through participation in global consortiums as well as industry-academic-government collaborative projects, we are contributing to the promotion of open-source software.

Bearer of the torch in the optical fiber broadband age

Rapid technological breakthroughs are enabling telecommunications networks to offer quality, reliability and stability, as well as flexibility, low cost and openness. And due to the appearance of new businesses that utilize various networks, networks are spreading into all corners of society and play a bigger role in corporate strategies than ever before. For open-access networks, the need to assure privacy, integrity and availability of information is paramount. Addressing these concerns as a major provider of business solutions, we are playing our part in making the broadband ubiquitous society a reality.

Innovator for the realization of a ubiquitous society

Japan has been an early leader in taking various steps to achieve a ubiquitous society. In the process, it is anticipated that world-leading services and business models will be generated, and that the Japanese economy will be invigorated as a result. NTT COMWARE is actively involved in the research and development of new services aimed towards a ubiquitous society, and we are currently making proposals and undertaking experiments to transition our business models into actual services through collaborative efforts that transcend business fields. We have also started developing a framework for future-oriented technological development and service implementation, such as a service that may allow integrated use of RFID (IC tag), mobile terminals including digital home appliances, and rich media*4, by businesses.

*1 Open-source software: Software developed on the assumption that the source code will be made public to allow free usage (including modification and distribution).

*2 Linux: OS originally developed and released by Finnish college student Linus Torvalds in 1991. From its initial release, the source code has been released frequently, allowing subsequent development by gathering opinions and feedback from programmers all around the world.

*3 Migration: Conversion process for computer programs and data. Frequently used to mean the conversion from one OS environment to another. Includes changing or upgrading a company’s core system to a new platform.

*4 Rich media: Handles not only low data capacity text and still images, but also data from various other media such as audio and video, in an integrated manner.

NTT COMWARE as a member of the NTT Group will also promote and pursue its own program of social responsibility.

Compliance for security and safety

Secure and safe networks and systems are a prerequisite for information usage in industry and society today. In order to protect people’s rights and interests, and to maintain confidentiality and privacy as a company that promotes the use of IT, NTT COMWARE has gained privacy mark acquisition and ISMS* certification, and has implemented a compliance program for laws protecting personal information including the Act for Protection of Computer Processed Personal Data held by Administrative Organs.
