Rising 8th Graders I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World By Malala Yousafzai Malala Yousafzai was only ten years old when the Taliban took control of her region. They said music was a crime. They said women weren’t allowed to go to the market. They said girls couldn’t go to school. Raised in a once-peacful area of Pakistan transformed by terrorism, Malala was taught to stand up for what she believes. So she fought for her right to be educated. On 9, 2012, she nearly lost her life for the cause: She was shot point-blank while riding the bus on her way home from school. No one expected her to survive.

The Hired Girl– Laura Amy Schlitz Fourteen year old Joan Skraggs, just like the heroines in her beloved novels, yearns for real life and true love. But what hope is there for adventure, beauty, or art on a hardscrabble farm in Pennsylvania where the work never ends? Over the summer of 1911, Joan pours her heart out into her diary as she seeks a new, better life for herself-because maybe, just maybe, a hired girl cleaning and cooking for six dollars a week can become what a farm girl could only dream of- a woman with a future.

The Underdogs – Mike Lupica Will Tyler may not be the biggest running back around, but no one can touch him when it comes to hitting the hole and finding the end zone. And no one can match his love of the game. When Will has a football in his hand, life can't touch him—his dad isn't so defeated, his town isn't so poor, and everyone has something to cheer for. All of which does him no good if the football season is canceled. With no funding for things like uniforms and a well-maintained playing field, with every other family moving to find jobs, there just isn't enough money or players for a season. It's up to Will to give everyone a reason to believe.

Middleworld – J & P Voelkel (The Jaquar Stones:Book 1) 14 year old Max Murphy is looking forward to a family vacation. But his parents, both archeologists and Maya experts, announce a change in plan. They must leave immediately for a dig in the tiny Central American country of San Xavier. Max has to go to summer camp and he is furious. When he is mysteriously summoned to San Xavier, he thinks they’ve had a change of heart. Upon his arrival, Max’s wild adventure in the tropical rainforests of San Xavier begins.

Killer Pizza – Greg Taylor Toby McGill dreams of becoming a world-famous chef. When Toby lands a summer job at Killer Pizza, things seem perfect. His coworkers, Annabel and Strobe, are cool, and Toby loves being part of a team. But none of them are prepared for what’s really going on at Killer Pizza: It’s a front for a monster- hunting organization! Learning to cook pizzas is one thing, but killing hideously terrifying monsters? That’s a whole other story. Still, if Toby quits Killer Pizza, will monsters take over his town?

Just Listen – Sarah Dessen When Annabel has a bitter falling out with her best friend, she suddenly finds herself isolated and friendless. But then she meets Owen—a loner, passionate about music and his weekly radio show, and always determined to tell the truth. And when they develop a friendship, Annabel is not only introduced to new music but is encouraged to listen to her own inner voice. With Owen’s help, can Annabel find the courage to speak out about what exactly happened the night her friendship with Sophie came to a screeching halt?
