ANOINTING OF THE SICK

This week we offer Mass at St. Mary’s with the anointing of the

sick on Monday, June 3 at 12:10 p.m. Anyone in need of physical

healing is encouraged to come forward for the anointing. Anyone

APPRECIATION

Fr. Michael Ssenfuma wishes to extend a heartfelt appreciation to

the Pastor and all the parishioners of St. Mary’s – particularly the

UCCB – for supporting him in the Boston Marathon. Over $3,750

was raised, and the biggest portion of this fund ($3,000) was do-

nated to Masaka Diocese to help in facilitating a retreat for the

clergy; 250 priests attend this retreat every year. Jesus says, “No

man has greater love than one who lays down his life for his

friends.” John 15:13 We brought a medal home, and for the sec-

ond year in a row we raised money to benefit causes. Thank you!

HUMANAE VITAE– 50 YEARS AGO

We continue to publish Blessed Pope Paul VI’s Encyclical Humanae V itae, which recently marked its 50th anniversary. This gift to

the Church and the world is about married life and procreation. Each weekend we reprint a section for your reflection.

III. PASTORAL DIRECTIVES

To Priests

28. And now, beloved sons, you who are priests, you who in virtue of your sacred office act as counselors and spiritual leaders both of

individual men and women and of families—We turn to you filled with great confidence. For it is your principal duty—We are speak-

ing especially to you who teach moral theology—to spell out clearly and completely the Church's teaching on marriage. In the perfor-

mance of your ministry you must be the first to give an example of that sincere obedience, inward as well as outward, which is due to

the magisterium of the Church. For, as you know, the pastors of the Church enjoy a special light of the Holy Spirit in teaching the

truth. And this, rather than the arguments they put forward, is why you are bound to such obedience. Nor will it escape you that if

men's peace of soul and the unity of the Christian people are to be preserved, then it is of the utmost importance that in moral as well

as in dogmatic theology all should obey the magisterium of the Church and should speak as with one voice. Therefore We make Our

own the anxious words of the great Apostle Paul and with all Our heart We renew Our appeal to you: "I appeal to you, brethren, by the

name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same

mind and the same judgment." to be continued

ST. CHARLES WEEKDAY EVENING MASS SUSPENDED

The 6:30 p.m. Mass celebrated Monday through Friday at St.

Charles Chapel will be suspended for the summer months begin-

ning in July. We plan on starting it back up after Labor Day.

CONFIRMATION

The parish celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation will take

place next Monday, June 10 at 7:00 p.m. Bishop Lino Wanok of

the Diocese of Lira, Uganda will be the celebrant. Everyone is

welcome to attend the Mass and pray for the confirmandi.

NO 6:30 PM MASS MONDAY EVENING JUNE 10

The 6:30 p.m. Mass on Monday, June 1 will not be celebrated

because of the Confirmation Ceremony. Anyone who usually at-

tends that Mass is encouraged to attend the Confirmation mass at

7:00 p.m. that same evening at St. Mary’s Church.

MASS CHANGE – SUNDAY JUNE 23 – NO 1:00 PM MASS

Cardinal O’Malley will be visiting the parish on Sunday June 3rd

to offer Mass on the Feast of the Body and Blood of the Lord just

as he did last year on this day. There will be no 1:00 p.m. Mass

this day so that we can have a Eucharistic Procession to St.

Charles Chapel. The rest of the weekend Mass schedule will re-

main the same but we encourage everyone to attend Mass at

11:00 a.m. with our Shepherd. The Mass will be celebrated in

English, Spanish and Luganda with music and singing led by the

various choirs in the parish.

BULLETIN COVER

Uganda Martyrs Feast - June 9

For the tenth year in a row, St. Mary’s is blessed to host the

Uganda Martyrs Feast for the Archdiocese of Boston. This year

we welcome two sons of Africa to lead us in worship: Bishop

Victor Phalana of South Africa and Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok

of Uganda. This celebration remembers the courageous laymen

who were killed and martyred under the orders of King Mwanga

II on June 3, 1886, because they refused to renounce the Christian

faith. We welcome everyone to celebrate with us on June 9 at

1:00 p.m. This feast has the power to unite all people of goodwill.

GREGORIAN CHANT SCHOLA

We received the following update from Randolph Nichols, our

leader of the Gregorian Chant Schola. Many thanks to Randolph

for bringing this ancient and beautiful musical tradition into the

celebration of Mass at St. Mary’s. We wish he and his wife well

in their move to Maine.

Parishioners of St. Mary’s...

Although no one remembers the exact date when St.

Mary’s Gregorian chant schola first formed, the ensemble

has been active for close to a decade. We began singing

Compline on Sunday evenings and then switched, at Fr.

Nolan’s recommendation, to chanting some of the propers at

the early Mass on the first Sunday of each month. It has

been my distinct honor and privilege to lead this group. Re-

grettably, June 2 will be my last Sunday at the 9:00 a.m.

Mass since my wife and I will be moving to Brunswick,

Maine.

Before leaving I want to express my profound gratitude to

those of you who have supported our efforts through the

years. Many have said that chant has enhanced their spiritu-

al focus at Mass and speaking for the schola, there could be

no greater compliment. I am also grateful for Fr. Nolan’s

encouragement, without which there would have been no

schola. That St. Mary’s sanctuary provides a near perfect

acoustical environment for singing chant has greatly aided

this endeavor. Most of all I am deeply indebted to those who

have sung in the ensemble, particularly those who have per-

severed from the very beginning: Dan Blair, Matt LeBlanc,

Mark Chlapowski, Maria Fernandes and Patricia Brown.

Their dedication and friendship is something I will always

treasure. – Randolph Nichols

Cardinal Seán O’Malley invites all couples of the Archdiocese of

Boston who are making their 25th and 50th wedding anniver-

saries to attend the annual Silver and Golden Anniversary Mass

CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES

We are blessed to have a number of parishioners graduating from

Waltham High School this Sunday, June 2nd. Last month, we had

parishioners who had been attending Brandeis and Bentley Uni-

versities graduate, too. May all the graduates have a great start in

this next phase of life. Congratulations to them and their families

on this great accomplishment.

Grace is not part of consciousness;

it is the amount of light in our souls,

not knowledge nor reason.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

Last Thursday we celebrated the feast of the Ascension. We are

reminded that Christ’s saving work on earth continues through his

disciples… and now through us.

When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and

joy into our hearts, into our lives

and through us into the hearts of those who are poor. Please re-

member the poor as you leave church today with your donation in

the St. Vincent DePaul poor boxes.

We see the poor all around us and we long to respond to their

needs, and so we pray: Spirit of God, fill us with your power. The

hungry search for sustenance of body and spirit, may we empty

ourselves to reach out to them. Many children are abused or live

in poverty and fear, may we be advocates for all those who feel

unprotected. Victims of violence cry out for justice, may we hear

their cries and work for change. For the grace of being called to

serve the poor, we give you thanks and praise! Amen.
