May 2018 DeMo by JUlie DUnlapNotes and photos by Marsha Pape

Julie Dunlap primarily focuses on painting portraits. She loves painting faces. She uses multiple washes to build up the features slowly with a series of glazes until the values please her. She said that she really connects with her subject once she starts work-ing on the eyes.Julie has studied with Ted Nutall (http://www.tednuttall.com/) and Jane Jones (https://janejonesart.com/). Ted Nutall works freely and uses beautiful color. This has greatly influenced her style. Jane Jones used photo cards to keep track of her work. Julie uses this idea to document her own works with photo cards containing this information Artist Name: Number (date): Title: Awards: Image Size: Medium: Price: Collection:

Julie uses 140 hot press paper. She does not staple or •tape down the paper. She places a damp towel on a white board. She puts the 140 lb paper on top of the towel and then sandwiches it between another white board that is placed on top of that. She takes off the top white board but leaves the paper on top of the towel during her entire painting process. It leaves the paper flat and feeling velvety. She uses three brushes: #16 Raphael Kolinsky Sable Round •Point, #10 Isaby Round Point and Vernon Shader. Her palette colors are Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Orange, •Cadmium Red, Quinacridone Rose, Alizarin, Mineral Violet, Cerulean, Cobalt, French Ultramarine Blue, Hookers Green, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber, Raw Umber. Her paints are primarily Winsor Newton or Daniel Smith.Julie described herself as a “gleaner” that picks up little •tricks. She shared many of those with us throughout her demo. She said she sometimes has difficulty drawing, so she prints out the photo in grayscale or black & white. She has that enlarged and uses that to determine which lines she wants to draw on the paper with her 2B pencil. To take away the fear of a white piece of paper, she put in •a very light wash of Cadmium Red and Cadmium Yellow in the lighter areas for skin tones, adding dots of Mineral Vio-let or Cobalt in the darker areas and letting the colors blend on the paper. Save the spot in the eye where light is re-flected. It should always be white. express with a minimum of strokes. It is more about painting the shadows than the forms themselves. She tickles the edges of the shadow side of the face, painting into the hair.To paint the hair she put in loose shapes and will go back •in to add detail. Blonde hair uses Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow and Cobalt. Dark hair might have Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue and Mineral Violet. Other colors may be

worked into to hair to show reflected light or shadow. She blended the hair into the background on the darker side. She used the end of the brush to paint wisps of hair. She used Cadmium Red to paint form shadows around the •eye socket with soft edges. Using a broken line, she outlined the eye crease with a blended color of Cad Red and Fr. Ul-tramarine Blue. She tickled it in above to create an eyelash effect. She feels it is just a color painting until she does the eyes and admitted it looks “spooky” until she does the iris and pupil. After the eyes are in she connects with the perso she is painting. Using a little green at the bottom of the iris helps set the eye in the socket. Use Raw Umber, Cerulean or Violet could be used if the eye is brown. Make the iris a little abstract painting and leave some lights areas. She said to do the mouth without painting everything. The •teeth are not the white of the paper they were painted with the initial wash. Paint around the teeth, not the teeth them-selves. The corners of the mouth are always dark. She put in some Alizarin and Ultramarine Blue and let it bleed in. Again, she uses a broken line on the lips giving just enough infor-mation to define the lip. The upper lip had Cadmium Red and Raw Sienna and a series of spots. There are no hard edges between the upper and lower lip.The nose tip of a child often has Orange with a touch of Cad •Red or Cobalt. The nostrils were Ultramarine Blue and Cad-mium Red mixed on the palette to make a brown. She paints a hard line at the top to get a good shape and then blends down and lets it disappear into the lip.Ted Nutall introduced her to sloppy dots. They are used to •break up an edge if it is too hard. They add texture and color interest, moving color through the painting. They can con-nect the subject to the edge of the painting.Julie said that she is a slow painter. She told us to go slow •and take it easy. She cautioned us to be wary of the grays.
