3 CMSP File Sharing User’s Guide
Overview
As of August 1, 2015, the Center for Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics (CMSP) will share
project data through the University of Minnesota’s Office of Information Technology (OIT). This
document is intended to provide instructions for accessing data from within and outside the
University of Minnesota network.
Figure 1 Overview of CMSP File Sharing through OIT
As shown in Figure 1, CMSP acquires data via mass spectrometers and transfers the resulting
raw files to OIT data storage. Once transferred, University of Minnesota Informatics Institute
(UMII) staff members and/or CMSP staff members will transfer the raw files to a CMSP
computer for further quantification and identification analysis. Once complete, the UMII Staff
and/or CMSP staff will transfer the raw results, quantification and/or identification results, and
any other pertinent documentation to OIT data storage and notify the researcher via email.
After receiving the email, researchers can access their data with their x.500 id using the
instructions in this guide in conjunction with the information in the notification email. Off-campus
access to the University of Minnesota network (for UMN and Sponsored researchers) is

accomplished by establishing a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection (see section Virtual
Private Network (VPN)).
x.500 id access
All access to OIT data storage is through your x.500 id. (Your x.500 id is you UMN internet ID
and is the username that you use to for email). If you don’t have an active x.500 id, you will not
be able to access your data.
Internal Accounts
If you are affiliated with the University of Minnesota (student, faculty, post-doc, researcher), you
will have an x.500 account. If you don’t remember your x.500 id or your password, go to UMN
IT Help at https://it.umn.edu/internet-accounts-passwords.
External Accounts
If you are not affiliated with the University of Minnesota (CMSP External Customer), you must
obtain a sponsored University of Minnesota account. For existing CMSP customers who do not
have an x.500 account please fill out the CMSP Sponsored Account Request form
(z.umn.edu/cmsprsa) and email Dr. Pratik Jagtap at [email protected] indicating you requested
a sponsored account. For new CMSP customers, CMSP staff will request a sponsored account
when your billing information is set up.
User Note: you must have an x.500 id or you will not be able to access your CMSP
generated data.
User Note: This OIT storage is for sharing data with CMSP and researchers.
Researchers must not store their own research or personal data within CMSP shared
folders.

Accessing Your Data on UMN network
If you are inside the UMN network (that is, you are on campus or have gained access to the
UMN network through a VPN (see Section: Virtual Private Network (VPN)) you can gain access
to CMSP shared data.
Windows® Platforms
If you are using a Windows® platform, perform the following steps:
1. Click on the start button in the lower left-hand corner of your desktop.
2. Select one of the following options to navigate to the Map Network Drive window
Option 1: Right-click on the “Computer” entry and select “Map network drive…” (See
Figure 2).

You will next see a window similar to the following (see Figure 4). Click on the “Map
network drive” button on the top banner. If you don’t see the “Map network drive” button,
your window may be too narrow. Simply widen the window to make the “Map network
drive” button visible.

3. Fill in the Map Network Drive Fields (For XP systems, see section 4)
a. Drive: Select a drive letter from the available drop down menu (see Figure 5).
b. Folder: Enter \\files.umn.edu\CMSP-NS\researchData\xxxxxxxx where xxxxxxxx is
the x.500 id of the PI for your group (see Figure 5).
c. Reconnect at logon – Check this box if you want to reconnect each time you log on
to your computer. Checking this box is only appropriate if you do not share a
computer (see Figure 5).
d. Connect using different credentials – Check this box if you did not sign on to your
computer with your x.500 id (see Figure 5).
e. Click the Finish button when complete (see Figure 5).

f. Enter your x.500 id and password (see Figure 6). Note that OIT is in the active
directory domain. If you are not on active directory (this is not common), then
precede your x.500 id with ad\ indicating that you are connecting to the active
domain. If you don’t know what this means, simply try using your x.500 alone. If that
doesn’t work, try using ad\your_x.500.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)
If you are not on one of the University of Minnesota campuses, you can still access your CMSP
data. First, you will need to establish a virtual private network (VPN) connection. Instructions
for downloading, configuring and using VPN are located at https://it.umn.edu/virtual-private-
network-vpn. If this link changes, simply Google UMN VPN.
User Note: To download the VPN software, you will need to log in with your x.500 id.
