Steve Summerlin was inducted into the NHPA Hall of Fame in July

establishing their websites. He has served as the NHPA Webmaster
since 1999. In 2000, Steve was honored with the Stokes Memorial
Award.
It is impossible to list all the various projects and improvements
Steve has completed to improve the service provided by the NHPA
Website. A couple noteworthy are the many hours spent scanning
the enAre 32 years- worth of News Digest magazines which are now

updates on the website of each year’s World Tournament.
STEVE SUMMERLIN INDUCTED INTO NHPA HALL OF FAME
TERRY’S VISION . . . . . . MICHIGAN HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM
Terry Beagle started dreaming of Michigan having their own Horseshoe Hall of Fame and Museum aHer visiAng the Hall of Fames in
Wisconsin, Florida and Missouri (NHPA Hall of Fame LocaAon). Also, while in Utah, she was able to check out Washington’s Mobile
Horseshoe Hall of Fame thanks to Jim and Phyllis Quist.
It is Terry’s vision to preserve and display Michigan’s history and accomplishments with a Horseshoe Hall of Fame and Museum. AHer
learning of Terry’s vision, the Jackson Horseshoe Club agreed to house the Michigan Horseshoe Hall of Fame and Museum. To date, they
have built and hung three showcases with a few horseshoe accomplishments on display.
Terry hopes that every Michigan pitcher catches the fever and gets excited about the Hall of Fame and Museum as it belongs to all of us.
If you have something that you think might be of interest to the Hall of Fame and Museum, please contact Ron Kohn, Steve Summerlin or
Dewey Howard.
Terry is also challenging all of the Michigan pitchers to donate what they can. She will match any donaAon up to a total of $5000.00.
There will be a plaque on display lisAng individuals that donate $100.00 or more. Please send your donaAons in a form of a check to
Roger Higgins made out to MHPA. In the memo area, please be sure to write “Hall of Fame”. So far, we have received $700.00 in
donaAons to help with this worthwhile project.
Please contact Terry Beagle if you have any quesAons about her vision for the Hall of Fame and Museum. You may contact her at
517.270.1329.

BERKLEY WINS WOODY CUP FOR THE FIRST TIME . . . . . .
The Woody Cup is a traveling trophy with the winning team returning the following year to defend their Atle. This trophy is provided by sponsor Larry Woods
and LDJ Trophies and is to be used as a promoAonal tool by the winning team to help grow their club.
Saturday, September 21, 2013 was a cloudy and cool day, but that was not enough to stop six teams of horseshoe pitchers from compeAng for the Woody Cup.
The Lansing team won the Woody Cup in 2012 and returned to Berkley in hopes of winning this trophy again. Each team needs to have at least five players
who have an established league average. Each team member has to pitch one game during the tournament. AHer the first game, the team captain has the
opAon of swapping out players. Lansing and Lake Orion both had an extra player and loaned them out to other teams for the compeAAon this year. AHer the
compeAAon was done, everyone enjoyed pizza and fellowship. Then the moment came when it was announced that Berkley had won the trophy. This is the
first Ame that Berkley has won this trophy. Great job Berkley!! Listed are the results of this friendly compeAAon:
1st
Place Berkley 35 Points
2nd
Place Lansing 25 Points
3rd
Place St. Clair Shores 24 Points
4th
Place Lincoln Park 23 Points
5th
Place Taylor 19 Points
6th
Place Lake Orion 18 Points
The money raised from this tournament was donated to St. Jude’s ($420.00 in cash and $100.00 from LDJ Trophies). Thanks to Dean Schmitz, Cathy Ardelean
and everyone who helped or pitched in the Woody Cup this year; it was a fun Ame. Field a team for the 2014 tournament to be held in St. Clair Shores on
September 20th
. For further informaAon, please contact Dean Schmitz at 586.463.7488 or by e-mail [email protected].
