Notes on the ProgramSpice, Magic, and Mystique: ChoralMusic of Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is commonly understood tobe the region north of Australia, south ofChina and east of India although somedefinitions include Taiwan at the north.(NWE 2009). With several races, religions, countries, and political systems, as well ascountless distinct cultures and languages,Southeast Asia is one of the world’s mostdiverse regions. This program focuses onthe six most chorally active countries in theSoutheast Asian region: Indonesia,Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore,Thailand, and Taiwan.

While different in history and culture, thesecountries share increasing prominence inchoral performance and composition. Choirsfrom the Philippines have been present onthe world stage since at least the late1970s. The excellence of Singaporeanchoirs has widely been recognized sincethe 1990s. More recently, the abundanceof choirs in Indonesia has included severalthat have travelled and made their markin international competitions. Malaysiaand Thailand are beginning to competeat an international level; recent events inthese two countries indicate a desire onthe part of local choral musicians to builda vigorous environment for performanceand composition.

These advancements appear to signal thatthe center of gravity in choral music, located in its birthplace of Europe andNorth America, is starting to shift to Asia.Southeast Asia, with its proximity to strongchoral traditions in China, Japan, andKorea, will inevitably become evenstronger and more organized. The regionwill likely be more significant, not only inperformance but in composition as well.

As this shift continues, hurdles in musiceducation, conductor training, publishingand copyright, infrastructure, scholarlyactivity, instrument availability and exper-tise, and performance venues will continueto be overcome.

The birth and spread of choral music inSoutheast Asia is directly related toWestern colonization, industrialization, andglobalization. Further, the spread ofChristianity has been an important contributorto the growth of choral music in SoutheastAsia. The current circumstances andrecent history of each country are dissimi-lar. The Philippines had a long associationwith Spain and the USA and the populationis at least 80% Christian. Thailand, by con-trast, the only country in the region not tohave been ruled by a Western power, ispredominantly Buddhist, and is onlyrecently developing its choral culture. Eventhough Indonesia is a Christian minoritycountry (10% approximately), most of thehundreds of choirs are connected tochurches. In Malaysia (peninsular and East)choirs, although small in number, are inte-grated into church and community. For itssize, Singapore has built an enviable repu-tation as a society that supports excellenceand participation in choral music throughsubstantial government support.

The pieces in this program represent aspecific array of compositional and arrang-ing models. Phra met ta is an original compo-sition using traditional melodic and rhythmicelements; Dumbele, Janger, Potong Padi, and Ni wa wa are arrangements of traditionalsongs. Diu diu dang a is an arrangement of apopular children’s song.

Phra met taINCHAI SRISUWAN (born 1953)

Phra met ta is an original setting of twoverses from Psalm 25 adapted by RuthSrisuwan. The a cappella setting for fourvoices builds an intense polyphonic textureall within the pentatonic scale. The workwas written while Srisuwan was a studentat the Asian Institute for Liturgical Music inthe Philippines. The composer describes itas a prayer written during a challengingperiod of his life.

Inchai Srisuwan is an ethnomusicologistand composer living in Bangkok. He wasborn in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, andreceived his first degree in church music atthe Payap University. His studies continuedin the 1980s at the Asian Institute forLiturgy and Music (AILM) in the Philippineswhere he earned degrees in ethnomusicol-ogy and composition. His research hasincluded the development of his own nota-tional system to help disseminate the oralinstrumental traditions of central Thailand. He now works as a church musician and asa composer.

Diu diu dang a CHIEN SHAN-HUA (born 1954)

Diu diu dang a is a pentatonic folk song ofthe I-Lan county area of northeasternTaiwan, the island off the eastern Chinesemainland formerly known as Formosa. Thissong was probably composed during theperiod of Japanese occupation, 1895–1945,and is very famous in Taiwan, existing inmany different arrangements for solosinger, for chorus, and for instrumentalensemble. It was arranged in 1990 andwas premiered by the Yin Qi choir.

Principally, I-Lan has always been a farmingcounty with very few factories where thelocal residents are proud of their fresh air

and unpolluted environment. As there wasno road connecting I-Lan and Taipei (thecapital city of Taiwan), trains were the easiestway to travel. This railway was one of theearliest built on the island. There weremany tunnels on the way, where conden-sation resulted in falling droplets. Whenthe train passed through the tunnels, thedrops falling on the roof of the train madea sound imitated in local dialect as “diudiu dang.”

This unaccompanied setting of the songrepresents the sound of the train startingup very slowly, getting faster, and finallyreaching its destination, blending the “diu diudang” with the “uuu” of the train’s whistle.

Chien Shan-Hua graduated from theNational Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) in1976 with a major in voice and composition. He started his music career as a teacherand also conducted field research on theaboriginal music of the Yami tribe, thearea in which he is currently directingfield work.

Professor Chien is currently chairperson ofthe department of music at NTNU. He isalso a board member of the TaiwanComposers’ Association and the ISCM-Taiwan section, and has been commissionedto compose by the Council for CulturalPlanning and Development of Taiwan. He isthe choral director of the Yin Qi choir, andhas conducted the Chin Shei choir, theTaiwan University choir, and the Girls’ Choirof the music department at NTNU.

In addition to his musical achievements inTaiwan, Professor Chien received a mastersof fine arts from the University of Californiaat Irvine, in 1980, a diploma in compositionat the Hochschule fur Musik und darstellendeKunst in Vienna, Austria, in 1986, and alsoreceived the Alban Berg Foundation Award.

Ni wa waAMERIC TING-WEI GOH

Ni wa wa is a setting of a popular children’ssong which Goh recalls hearing as a boywhen his mother would sing this traditionalsong to his sister and him. Although thetune and lyrics convey a simple sentiment,Goh was struck by the strong emotion achild would feel for a small clay doll. Gohchose to set the tune in four miniatures, with each version presenting the tune in adifferent voice: soprano, alto, tenor, andbass, respectively. The tune appears hereonly as Goh remembers it and he notesthat it may be slightly different from theway other children of his generationremember it.

Americ Ting-Wei Goh studied compositionin the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts,Singapore, under John Sharpley and GohToh Chai. He also studied compositionunder Leong Yoon Pin and Jennifer Thamand abroad at the Universitat fur Musik andDarstellende Kunst, Graz. His music hasbeen performed by choral and instrumen-tal ensembles in Singapore such as theSYC Ensemble Singers, The Singers,Amadeus Choral Society and schoolchoirs, Philharmonic Winds, Mus’ArtPercussion Ensemble, and the SingaporeWind Symphony Percussion Ensemble.

DumbeleRODOLFO DELARMENTE

Dumbele is a piece meant to accompanyritual and was composed by Mr.Delarmente based on Ramon Obusan’sresearch into dance rituals. The piecedepicts a ritual to honor the rain god,Dumbele, after the tribe had suffered for

years under a famine which had come aspunishment for the people’s ingratitude. Thework is divided into four parts: the summon-ing of the people to a ritual in the fields, theresponse from Dumbele, his downpour, andthe Thanksgiving that follows. The composi-tion contains onomatopoeic phonemesthat imitate the sound of rain, transformingfrom a drizzle to downpour. In its originalform this piece was premiered in the 1980s.The current arrangement alludes to thesound of different animals, especially birds.

Rodolfo Delarmente has enjoyed a longand highly praised career as professor andconductor at De La Salle University inManila, Philippines. His choirs have touredthe world, including a renowned series oftours through Europe in the 1990s and 2000s.He has received commendations at everylevel, among them recognition as “Conductorof the Year” from the then-PresidentFerdinand Marcos. His arrangements andcompositions are performed by choirs acrossSoutheast Asia and his prominence in thechoral world is acknowledged internationally.

Potong PadiNELSON KWEI

Potong Padi is an arrangement of a Malaytraditional song and depicts the sights andsounds of the rice paddy (padi) during harvest. The melody and lyrics are derived from thework song and dance of farmers as theyharvest the rice. Mr. Kwei’s beautiful, sim-ple arrangement herein was fashioned forthis edition and is based on his own arrange-ment for men’s chorus. The men’s versionwas commissioned and premiered by theVictoria School Choir of Singapore forthe Singapore Youth Festival ChoralCompetition in 1995.

JangerBUDI SUSANTO YOHANES (born 1979)

Janger is a traditional Balinese song anddance characterized by jagged rhythmsand a quick tempo. This song is frequentlysung by Balinese children while they dancethe Janger together during evening partiesand is usually accompanied by instrumentsfrom the traditional Balinese gamelanensemble, here imitated by the voices. The traditional song commonly features asequence of dancing and singing from thegirls with boisterous physical and vocaloutbursts from the boys.

Budi Susanto Yohanes was born in 1979 inBlitar, East Java, Indonesia, and originallytrained as an electrical engineer. He is thefounder and conductor of the GraciosoSonora Choir for whom he writes many ofhis works. St. Paul’s Suite for String Orchestra, Op. 29, No. 2GUSTAV HOLST

Holst completed the St. Paul’s Suite in1913 in thanks to the St. Paul’s Girls’School for providing him with a largesoundproof room for his work. This newstudio sported double windows, twopianos, and central heating. The first move-ment begins with a robust Jig. TheOstinato opens with a figure played by thesecond violins, then a solo viola introducesthe principal theme. In the Intermezzo, asolo violin introduces the principal themeover pizzicato chords, then the solo violajoins in a duet. After an animated sec-tion, the original melody is again heard, now performed by a quartet of soloists. Finally, Dargason is introduced very softly, then cellos enter playing the beautiful“Greensleeves” and the two folk songsare played together.

Serenade for StringsJACK JARRETT

Meditation is an exceptionally lyrical worktaken from Jarrett’s Serenade for Strings. The engaging harmonies, slow develop-ment, and full breadth of expressive oppor-tunities allow our orchestra to strive for thehighest levels of musicianship.

Concerto Grosso No. 1 for StringOrchestra with Piano ObbligatoERNEST BLOCH

Concerto Grosso No. 1 was composedduring 1925 and 1926, and is scored forstring orchestra with piano obbligato infour movements. The contrasting timbresof the strings and the piano suggest theBaroque figured bass and the texture is gen-erally contrapuntal and actually polytonal. In

the Prelude, the melodic material is oftenshort and motivic. The last movement notonly is in a Baroque form, the fugue, but alsocontrasts solo strings against the full ensem-ble, reminiscent of Bach’s BrandenburgConcerto No. 3. This piece wonderfully con-trasts the Baroque compositional tech-niques with the 20th century techniques ofpolytonal clashes and polymetric shifts.

Dedicatory FanfareWILLIAM CHERRY

Dedicatory Fanfare by contemporary com-poser William Cherry follows the traditionalpurpose of this type of composition: to intro-duce an instrumental performance. Fanfaresare also well known for their use in militarybands in the United States to announce thearrival of the President, a general or otherhigh-ranking dignitaries. This particular fan-fare is very contemporary in sound, with richharmonies, various styles and broad melodiclines, yet it manages to maintain the pompand circumstance of the traditional fanfare.

Bist Du Bei Mir (If Thou Be Near)JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH

Bist Du Bei Mir (If Thou Be Near) was com-posed by Johann Sebastian Bach of the lateBaroque period. Bach, a music teacher aswell as an organist and choirmaster copiedout two collections of music for his secondwife, Anna Magdalena Wulken, who was afine soprano. These volumes of music havecome to be known as the Anna MagdalenaNotebooks. In the second of the note-books are included several songs, one ofwhich is Bist Du Bei Mir ( If Thou BeNear).

Bist Du Bei Mir is an expression of a deepand abiding love of a husband for his wife orwife for her husband.

EnduranceTIMOTHY MAHR

Endurance, composed by Timothy Mahr(born 1956 ), is a reflection upon the infi-nite endurance of the human spirit, the reli-gious spirit, and the spirit of the earth.Initial inspiration for this work came froma book of the same title by AlfredLandsing, documenting the amazingstory of the ill-fated expeditions of theAntarctic explorer Sir Edward Shackeltonin 1914. His ship the Endurance becameice-bound and eventually sank, strandingShackelton and his crew of 27. They sur-vived for 15 months exposed to the unre-lenting, dangerous Antarctic weather andmiraculously lived to tell the tale. Thestrength of character by these men in endur-ing incredible hardships is truly awe-inspir-ing. All three spirits—human, religious, andearth are intertwined in this amazing storyof human survival against all odds.

The Florentiner (Grande Marica Italiana)JULIUS FUCÍK

Composer Julius Fucík (1872–1917) wasamong the brightest jewels in wind bandcomposers. Anyone associated with windband music would have instant recognitionof Fucík and his particular style. In hisshort, brilliant career during which heserved as bandmaster to the 86thHungarian Infantry Regiment at Budapest,Fucík developed his own wide-rangingstyle of writing marches. This was a popu-lar dual profession among bandmastersamidst the ongoing nationalism flourishingin Europe. Thus, it is not surprising to find aHungarian writing a grand Italian march andoutdoing many of Italy’s own composers.
