Santana High School— NICOLE McCLOUR

Principal, Luciano De Sylva Nicole arrived at Santana in late spring 2006 and quickly became adjusted to her new school. Always with a friendly smile, and full of life and enthusiasm, Nicole was doing well in all aspects of school life. She performed well academi-cally, participated in ASB activities and was elected ASB President. Shortly thereafter Nicole would take on her greatest challenge. She was involved in a very serious traffic accident and almost lost her life. Nicole showed her courage, grit and determination by surviving and overcoming the physical devastation of the accident. After months of recuperation, she returned to school and completed nearly a year’s worth of work in one semester. Her teachers characterize her as bright, determined, friendly, and a ray of sunshine. She has been a role model for all. Nicole will continue her studies in the field of communications.

Rowland Adult & Community Education— BONNIE RAFANAN Director, Rocky Bettar

Bonnie is married and has four boys, ages 11-17. She is setting an example that achieving a high school diploma is important and wants to show her sons that hard work and determination take you to great places in life. Bonnie attended Valinda Elementary School, Grand View Middle School and Workman High School. She enrolled at Rowland Adult and Community Education in January 2007. Bonnie completed her academic requirements and passed the California High School Exit Exam and will receive her diploma in June 2008. Mrs. Rafanan raised her sons while working part-time in a printing shop. She is currently working as a noon aide for a middle school and also volunteers there. Nogales High School— XANTHE SANGCO

Principal, Nancy Padilla Xanthe demonstrates subtle yet commanding leadership qualities, which are most evident as the Captain of the Noble Regiment Drill Team. She was recently awarded a scholarship by the Western Band Association for her four years of participation with the Noble Regiment. Xanthe has maintained a 3.42 grade point average in a college prep curriculum and is currently enrolled in the Arts and Communication certificate program, which requires intensive study. She was selected to perform in the 2007 Rose Parade as part of the Pasadena City College Honor Band and has held down a part-time job in her “spare” time. She is currently spending her personal time teaching dance to junior high drill team students. She plans to attend a Cal State University and major in nursing.

Rowland High School— RUBINA KHORANA Principal, Robbie Robinson

Rubina is an intelligent, caring, hardworking young lady who is a credit to her school. Academically, she has maintained a 3.6 GPA in an Advanced Placement/Honors course of study. She is currently participating in the Health and Medical Service career pathway and will soon be interning at a local dental office. While serious about her studies, Rubina is also actively involved in campus life as president of the Art Club and as a member of the Muslim Student Association and the Debate Club. She also volunteers at a local senior citizens center and always makes time to assist others—all of this while concurrently holding down two jobs as a customer service assistant. It is clear that Rubina exemplifies the best that Rowland has to offer and is very deserving of this award.

Bassett High School— JOSE SALAS Principal, Carolyn Pruitt

Academically, Jose has excelled in a college prep/honors curriculum maintaining a 3.14 GPA. He is impressive because not only is he able to excel academically, but he also maintains a balance between sports, school, and student government. This has gained him much respect amongst his peers and staff. Whether he is on the football field or hosting the Renaissance Rally or writing for the school newspaper, Jose goes beyond his responsibilities to meet his everyday goals. Jose comes from a household of eight and will be the first to attend a university. He states that his mother has been his inspiration and role model, nurturing his personal and academic development. Currently, he has been admitted to the School of Engineering at CSU, LA. As a future engineer, his goal is to make an impact by creating environment-friendly machinery.

Nueva Vista Continuation High School— BRIANDA OJEDA Principal, Cecilia Ornelas

Brianda was born in Mancanillo Colima, Mexico. She is a senior at Nueva Vista High School. She is a member of the School site Council, and for two of her elective classes, she works in a 2nd grade classroom at Erwin Elementary assisting the teacher and students. Her dream is to become a teacher. She thinks teaching is a great profession and has the desire to help children learn so that they may have better lives. After graduation, she would like to continue her education at a community college, and then transfer to UCLA. She credits her father who inspires her to do her best to improve herself. Brianda was selected for this award because of her perseverance and drive.

Bassett Adult School— ANA CALDERON Principal, Jorge Seccia

Ana started coming to the Office Occupation Class at Bassett Adult School in the Fall of 2005. After spending time trying to find a job with no success, her initial goal was to obtain a position as a secretary. What she encountered at Bassett Adult School was much more. She found her instructors to be an enormous source of encouragement and support. In January 2007, Ana was chosen by her teacher to participate in a paid internship program with Bassett Adult School. During this past year she has been exposed to many facets of the school’s front office procedures. She was also very instrumental in creating a PowerPoint presentation in both English and Spanish for new student orientation. In the Spring of 2007 she took her CAHSEE exam and successfully passed it, earning her high school diploma. Currently she is enrolled in Computer Operator and Legal Assistant courses. She is very grateful for her selection as a Principal for a Day scholarship recipient.

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

La Puente High School— ZHEN (Jane) XU Principal, Ava Smalley

Jane is #1 in her class with an academic cumulative weighted GPA of 4.43. She receives perfect or near perfect scores on every exam she takes. She has most recently advanced to Finalist Standing in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Beyond Jane’s excellent academic record, she is involved in a plethora of extracurricular volunteer and summer activities that have served to make Jane a well rounded and humble student. Jane has accomplished all of this despite the challenges encountered as an immigrant to the USA. Jane’s humility and respect for the hardships her parent endures daily is what makes Jane a true person of character. Having her mother serve as the sole supporter of her family has not provided Jane with excuses for not excelling, but has served as motivation for her long term success.

Los Altos High School— JADE ESQUIVEL Principal, William Roberts

Jade is a three year letterman in Girls Volleyball, and this year’s Miramonte League MVP, and CIF Player of the Year. Through a difficult year which included the tragic loss of the family home by fire, she managed to continue her academic and athletic successes. She has not let any hardships that she has faced serve as an excuse in anything that she has done. Jade stays strong for her family. Jade has been highly involved in Renaissance for the past three years, being one of the group's hardest workers. She brings creativity to the group and expands ideas shared by Renaissance team members. These ideas sometimes become cornerstones to programs that Renaissance uses to enhance the school culture at Los Altos. Jade is truly a leader in Renaissance and is integral to the program’s success.

Glen A. Wilson High School— LIBBY GARCIA Principal, Albert Clegg

Active in multiple extracurricular activities: ASB Leadership, Jazz Cats, Campus Light, Key Club, Cross Country Team, and Volleyball Team, this energetic graduate also takes advanced placement classes in Biology, English, and Spanish. Outside of Wilson, Libby tutors a girl who has Down Syndrome, participates in a community service club, and represents Glen A. Wilson at the monthly HLPUSD Board Meetings. Libby represented Wilson at the 2007 California Girls State Leadership Conference in Fresno along with 500 girls from all over California. At this conference, she helped to create a mock trial with the state’s elected Supreme Court Judges. This experience has motivated her to attend a four year university majoring in Political Science and then attend a law school. She plans to have a successful career and a family to love and treasure.

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

William Workman High School— RIGOBERTO BARBOSA Principal, Yvette Meneses

Rigoberto is one of the top seniors at Workman High School, ranking #22 in a class of 300 seniors. He has separated himself from the average college-bound student by demonstrating tremendous maturity and responsibility, bringing balance to his life. He supports his family by working, and participates in Varsity Soccer, and maintains his position in the top 10% of his class, taking the most difficult honors AP courses offered in Calculus, English Literature, and Spanish. Rigo was re-designated out of the English Language program, becoming a fluent English speaker last year. This kind of determination makes Rigo stand out as a leader. He is also an active member of the MechA club, AVID program and AP club. A bright future awaits this dedicated senior.

Valley Alternative High School— BLAKE PHELPS Principal, Pricilla Tam

Success for this graduating senior came after years of “turning around his life” to achieve his goal of graduating “on track” from Valley High School. This young man overcame family problems and multiple challenges, to become the confident and focused graduate with an eye on his future. Interests in mathematics and athletics are guiding him to consider a career in teaching, currency exchange, accounting, or as a fire fighter. His positive choices have resulted in his success, and he now resides in Hacienda Heights with an uncle who encourages and supports him. Brian hopes to enroll in a community college, eventually transferring to a four-year college. Brian Phelps has proven himself to be a hard worker, determined, as well as a respectful mature young man. Valley Alternative School proudly recommends Blake Phelps for this scholarship.

Willow Adult Education— MARISOL GONZALEZ Director, Alan Bernstein

Marisol Gonzalez is a Cosmetology student that started her training in June, 2007 and is slated to complete her course of study in May of 2008. Her positive attitude in class has been an inspiration to her fellow students. She always extends a helping hand to new students coming in to the program. As with many of our adult students, Marisol balances a demanding home life with husband, daughter and another one on the way, while attending school 8 and 9 hours a day. During her first year of training she had perfect attendance. Marisol’s work ethic is great, as is the practical application of her training on the salon floor. This scholarship will allow Marisol to attend some of the advanced cosmetology workshops offered by industry leaders in the community.
