ELCA Malaria Campaign A child dies from malaria every 60 seconds.

We are in a special moment to help turn this around. Since the start of the ELCA Malaria

Campaign, ELCA members and our companions overseas have already seen a reduction in the

number of deaths from this preventable, treatable disease. We are a church that believes God

is calling us into the world together. Working through Lutheran partners in Africa, the ELCA

Malaria Campaign is uniquely positioned to help provide mosquito nets, education, testing,

medication and more to help eliminate deaths from this disease—for good. Learn more at

www.elca.org/malaria#sthash.4PbjB9HD.dpuf.

Prince of Peace members have participated in the Malaria Campaign in past years and the campaign is close to its

$15 million ELCA goal ($12 million so far) and our synod goal of $300,000 ($260,000 so far). We will do one more

Door Offering for Malaria Campaign on September 21. (Maybe we each can give a few coins each time we get a

mosquito bite this next month!) We can be happy we are now safe from malaria in USA. We can also pray for brothers

and sisters who can die from a mosquito bite. A few pennies... and a prayer... can help! Let's end this campaign strong!

Let's make malaria history! PoP Global Mission team

Lutheran World Relief is in Urgent Need of School Kits and Personal Care Kits Currently they have more requests from around the world than they have kits to fill them. Lutheran World Relief (LWR)

is asking us to please make a few more kits than we normally do. Prince of Peace members are encouraged to

contribute to this worthy cause by donating the items needed for the kits. The need is great.

School Kits

70-sheet notebooks (no loose-leaf paper) Blunt scissors

30 centimeter rulers (may have inches on reverse side) Pencil sharpeners

2.5" erasers Boxes of 16 or 24 crayons

Black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink)

Personal Care Kits

Light-weight bath-size towel (maximum 52”X27”), dark color recommended, new or gently used.

Two bath-size bars (4 to 5 oz.) of soap, in original wrapping

Metal nail clipper (attached file optional)

Sturdy comb (no picks or fine toothed combs)

Items may be dropped off at anytime in the storage room behind the library. If you would prefer to give a monetary

donation, please make your check payable to WELCA, noting LWR Kits, and send it to Jeannine Bultman at W6072

Cornflower Drive, Appleton, WI 54915. Questions? Call Lorraine Krenz at 993-1880. Thank you for your support.

Transitions

One thing I always appreciate about the Bible is its unvarnished

and accurate portrayal of people as they respond to God. Sometimes,

their portraits are flattering and other times they aren’t. Yet one

characteristic of virtually all of them is that they are in constant

movement, always changing, always being affected by their interactions

with God. Rarely, do we see people, who are unmoved by their

interactions with God, and those that are, are usually the tragic ones,

who have become stuck in their views of self and God. For example,

contrast Peter’s growth and development from when he first met Jesus

on the shore of the Sea of Galilee to the Pharisees. Jesus had an effect

on both, but the one who had the most positive growth was Peter. Why

did that happen? I believe it happened because he was willing to be

touched and changed by our Lord.

This is true for us too. We are always in transition and the most positive change for us will occur when we are

willing to be touched and transformed by Jesus. As we look ahead to the coming month and prepare to say goodbye to

Pastor Gary and his family, we realize that our lives have not been standing still. Though, we may recall so many times

of our ministry together, as if they happened only yesterday, we have perpetually been in motion and transition. In fact,

we are always transitioning from one thing to the next. The challenge for us is whether we acknowledge those changes

and adapt and embrace them or become unrealistically stubborn and demand that things stay as they always have

been, which is ironic, because there never was a time in any of our lives when things were ever static.

Yet through this all the one who helps us is our Lord, who is unchangeable in His love, but always open to His

changing children. As the writer of Hebrews says in 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

He is the one, whom we can cling to and He is the one, who gives shape and order to our ever changing lives.

Over the next month, I hope you will enter anew into the ministry opportunities that are before you. Consider

volunteering for something you have never done before. You aren’t the same as you were yesterday. Be open to God’s

Call. Also, I hope you will joyfully enter into the affirmations and celebrations of Pastor Gary’s long ministry in our

midst. I know this will be an emotional month for many. I know it will be for me. We may find ourselves with moments

of happiness, sadness, grief, joy, nostalgia for years ago and a desire for things to not change. That is understandable,

healthy and normal. But as we go through it all, may we allow the one who knows our hearts and minds better than we

know ourselves guide us. As we do, we will find the Lord is already where we are going!

Joy,

CROP Walk 2014

A Walk to Help End Hunger

Sunday, October 12

Make plans to join fellow Prince of Peace members as we walk together as a congregation

to help end hunger. CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide events sponsored by Church

World Services and organized by local volunteers to raise funds to end hunger. Join us

either by walking or sponsoring a walker on October 12.

Beginning September 21, members of Social Concerns Ministry will have forms available in the narthex between the

services that you can either sign up to walk or sponsor one of PoP CROP Walk walkers. You can also visit the PoP CROP Walk

website to sign up or donate! The link will be available around September 1 on PoP's home page www.popappleton.org.

2014 FOX CITIES CROP Hunger Walk (1, 3, or 6 mile walk)

• Sunday, October 12

• 12:30 pm Registration with Walk beginning at 1:00 pm

• Memorial Presbyterian Church, 803 E. College Avenue, Appleton

Questions? Contact Ron Jones of the Social Concerns Ministry (phone: 731-9250 or email: [email protected]).

They live among us, but we do not really know them. They have come, as our

ancestors did, to make a better life for themselves and, above all, for their children.

But their efforts are complicated by a restrictive and politicized immigration system.

Walk in our Shoes: Understanding the Latino Experience, is a Simulation experience,

developed and produced by ESTHER, that will give participants a chance to deepen

their understanding of the problems that the Fox Valley’s 20,000 Latinos face: finding

jobs and transportation, obtaining health care, keeping their documentation up-to-

date or living without it, and trying to

understand a strange language and culture.

During the 2½ to 3-hour event, each

participant will assume the role of a Latino character. The individual will face

specific challenges that must be solved during the simulation, which will cover four

days in the life of the character.

Prince of Peace will be co-hosting this Latino Simulation with our neighbor from

across Calumet Street, Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Congregation.

The Simulation will be held at Prince of Peace on Saturday, October 25th from 9:30

to noon. There is a sign-up sheet on the Social Concerns bulletin board in the

narthex. For more information or to volunteer to help organize this event, contact

Ron Jones at [email protected] or call at 920-731-9250.

SEPTEMBER 2014 • PRINTS OF PEACE 4

Monday Evening Service Update Council has decided from Sept. 2014 – August 2015 to only offer a Monday night

service once per month. That will be on the Monday after the second Sunday.

(Since September starts on Monday, our first Monday night worship will be Sept.

15.) Those services will be conducted by an ordained pastor, who is a member of

Prince of Peace. This is an attempt to ease Pastor Roger’s responsibilities during

this interim time and to truly give him a Sabbath and time to stay rested and

refreshed for the increased responsibilities. Thank you for your understanding and

also thank our pastors for serving us in this way.

These apartments are very affordable with many amenities, including an

on-site beauty shop, coin-operated laundry facilities, a beautiful

Commons community room for activities and gatherings of family

members and friends, and much more. Living at Linwood Place frees

older adults from maintenance work of living in your own home while

enjoying the friendship of other seniors who live independently, but

consider each other family. Call John, Bldg. Mgr. @ 419-5754 to arrange

a tour. To learn more about Fox Valley Lutheran Homes Linwood Place

Apartments please visit our website at www.fvlhomes.org or call Marlys

@ 734-7225.

Ice Cream Fundraiser on Sunday, September 14th from 10 AM - 2PM in

the Commons at Fox Valley Lutheran Home, 425 N. Linwood Ave.,

Appleton. Tickets are available for only $10 each from Board Members,

by calling the office at 734-7225 or purchase at the door. Delicious

home baked pies and Culver’s custard –

makes your mouth water! Come right after

breakfast and call it morning dessert.

Apartment tours will be available. We

welcome your participation and support.

ANNOUNCEMENTS You are Cordially Invited Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

God’s work. Our hands.

The East Central Synod of Wisconsin cordially invites you to attend

the Worship Celebration and

Installation Service for

Bishop Gerald L. Mansholt

Saturday, the Twentieth of September Two thousand fourteen

Two o’clock in the afternoon Trinity Lutheran Church

Appleton, Wisconsin

A reception will follow the service

Attention Esther Circle Members Our first meeting after the summer break is on

Monday, September 8th at 7:00 p.m. It will be at

Nancy Nagan’s home. Please NOTE her new address

is 1346 Moonridge Court, Kaukauna, WI 54130.

Questions? Please call Nancy at 460-7182. Thanks

for your cooperation.

Thank You! Thank You!

Thank You! Once again Prince of Peace

members have risen to the

occasion and provided for our

neighbors in need. We were able to donate 100

pairs of pants,100 shirts, 100 sweatshirts and 100

gift certificates for a hair cut and shoes to area

children for the important first day of school! God

has blessed us with all of our possessions and with

those possessions, you have so generously given to

these school children. As you begin to see those

yellow school buses in your neighborhoods or as you

prepare your own children for their first day of school

in a few weeks, we hope that you’ll also take a

minute to pray for the child that you purchased

clothing for or donated money to. You’ve sent them

on their way to their classrooms with a warm

blessing – Praise God From Whom All Blessings

Flow!

In addition, I wish to thank our Christmas in August

team. Without them, this event could not take place.

My thanks to Stacy and Karin Juhl, Shirley Walker,

Megan and Tyler Kimball and Donna Cook. Also

thanks to Renee Priebe and Joanne Siekierke for

helping with delivery. God bless you all! Nette

Kimball

Box Tops Thank you for your continued support in saving box

tops. Ten cents may not seem like much, but

Einstein School, with your support, has received

about $10,000 in the last 8 years. This is the

reimbursement for buying General Mills products.

The money generated from the box tops helps the

teaching staff buy much needed school equipment

that they could not afford to purchase through their

regular school budget. The box top container is

located in the hallway across from the offices

above the mail boxes. Thank you!

Fox Valley Interfaith Gathering Sunday September 21

(2:00-5:00pm) at Fox Valley Islamic Society site,

Neenah

Once again the Fox Valley Islamic Society is inviting Prince of

Peace and all churches, synagogues and people of faith to their

annual Interfaith Gathering at their mosque (103 Kappell Drive,

Neenah). The meeting will gather over 200 people of faith in the

Fox Valley to hear speakers talk about Establishing Peace based

on Justice and Fairness from the perspective of various faith

leaders in our community. September 21 is also the 30th

anniversary of the United Nation’s International Day of Peace—

what better way to demonstrate our striving for peace than this

interfaith dialogue!

After the speakers and table discussions, our hosts have invited

all to eat a special meal together. For many years this special

event gathers people of many faiths, allows us to learn together,

meet one another and share a common meal together. All are

invited. (In case of inclement weather, the gathering will be held at

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 140 S. Green Bay Road, Neenah.)

Call Chuck Steinbach at 954-1164 to carpool or for more

information.

Step into Serving! You can make a difference at Prince of Peace and in

the Community! Prince of Peace engages a large network of volunteers for its

various ministry teams and small tasks. We need your God-

given gifts to serve a mission-driven and a growing church.

Serving opportunities are seven days a week! We need families

and individuals to “Build the Body of Christ.” We also need

volunteers for this upcoming school year. Please prayerfully

consider volunteering in one of the following areas: Sewers for

quilting projects, helping with small outdoor projects around

the church, preparing the projection for Sunday worship

services, welcoming and offering information to

visitors and members, singing wonderful music in

choir, ministry leaders facilitating vision and goals,

mentoring 9th grade youth, and so much more.

Volunteer opportunity forms are in the narthex

underneath the ministry board. For more

information contact Pastor Roger, Pastor Gary,

Cheryl Davis (intern) or Cindy Romnek (Spiritual

Gifts Coordinator).

We are called to love the Lord with our head,

heart, mind and strength, and serve Him with our

hands. There are hundreds of ways to step into

service and build our relationship in faith at Prince

of Peace.

Last Reiminder—SMILE! You are on

PoP’s Candid Camera Friendly Reminder – Please submit your family or

individual photos for the Telephone Directory. We would like to have

the Fall Telephone & Photo directories out before Gary retires from

Prince of Peace.

What we need from you is a family or individual photo taken

sometime this summer or before September 5th. We are looking for

pictures of you and your family doing what you do best! Whether you

are into hiking or biking, traveling or cooking, following your favorite

sports team, volunteering, attending a special event or sitting with

your favorite pet— we want a picture of YOU!

Photos can be sent electronically through email to Brigetta

Wingender at [email protected] or dropped off at the office (attention

– Cindy Romnek) in an envelope with your name and phone number,

as well as all of the people in the photo. (Photos will be scanned and

returned.) Our goal is to have as many individual and family photos

as we can by September 5th. If you or your family are not able to

submit a photo, we can take a photo of you at church. Or if you would

like to use the same picture as in the last directory, please let us

know. If you would like more information, please contact Cindy

Romnek – 739-5255 or Brigetta Wingender – 882-0057.

Update FMSC Successful! Thank you for your prayers, your

great team packing skills, and your

generous donations!! We met our goals….and so much

more!!

• 272,160 meals packed - enough to feed 745 children

a meal a day for a year!

1019 total volunteers from July 21st to 23rd!

The 1260 boxes of food went from our MobilePack site

directly to International Children’s Fund which is based in

Neenah. They pay for shipping to their mission sites in

Liberia.

• International Children’s Fund received our Fox Cities

MobilePack food in 2012. ICF sent pictures and news

of the food arriving and unloading from the trucks in

Liberia, the food being dispersed, and the kids eating

the cooked rice. That was within 2-3 months from

our packing to the kids eating the nutritious meals.

Again…thank you! Together we have acted locally to have

a global impact.
