Craig Kielburgers story is impressive. He became
a social activist at the age o twelve when he was
moved by the story o a boy his own age rom
Pakistan who was slain or speaking out against
child labor. Craig elt an immediate responsibilityto act. Starting with his own school, he coordi-
nated a group o classmates to join him in what
has since become a truly signicant and
increasingly successul eort to create social
change on a global scale. In 1995, Free The
Children was ormed by Craig and his brother,
Marc Kielburger.
Free The Children has taken the unique notion
o children helping children to aect social
change around the world. Its work has resulted in
signicant changes in two distinct areas, both o
which RIM is proud to support. The rst and most
direct is access to education. The second is an
increased level o awareness and engagement
that changes the sel-view and world outlook o
the youth who sign on a shaping mechanism
or the leaders o tomorrow. Through domesticempowerment programs and leadership training,
Free The Children inspires young people to
become socially conscious global citizens as well
as agents o change or their peers worldwide.
Since 1995, Free The Children has organized
motivational speaking tours and in-depth leadership
training programs or more than 350,000 young
people globally. It has established 3,500 Youth
In Action groups across Canada and the U.S. to
generate change. More than 207,000 school and
health kits have been sent to children in need
Free The Childrenis a shamelessly idealistic agency o social change.
The worlds largest network o children helping children. Free The Childreninspires and enables young people to become active participants in the

All o this has been achieved through an
operational structure that sees an average o
91 cents o every dollar going directly to programs
that benet children. Free The Children repre-

In February 2011, RIM sponsored a Waterloo
Region We Day a one-day event designed to
launch a year-long set o initiatives and actions
as part o the We Schools in Action Program.
The day was a rocking, inspirational success, with
6,000 kids rom 150 local schools in attendance

two villages, one in India and the other in Kenya.
In addition to supporting community developmentactivities, RIM is also sponsoring the RIM Build
A Village Award, which will allow 50 students in
Canada to travel and work directly with the
villagers. The students will assist in providing
access to basic needs in the context o Free The

The Accessibility team at RIM is dedicated to
meeting the needs o customers with disabilities.
The team engages customers with disabilities
directly through usability studies, collaborative
research with disability advocacy organizations,
public policy working groups, and events within
the disability community. These types o varied
interactions give the team rst-hand knowledge
as to how product accessibility can help make
a dierence in the lives o people who use
BlackBerry products and services to stay
connected to the world. The Accessibility team
is dedicated to bringing accessible BlackBerrysolutions to market. Based on eedback and
requests rom within the hearing loss community,
the Accessibility team specied the design o new
and extended vibration settings on BlackBerry
smartphones. This enabled customers with
hearing loss to customize the experience o
incoming notications relative to their needs.
Through participation within the vision loss
community, the team was able to develop
and launch the Clarity theme or BlackBerry
smartphones. This theme eatures large text and
a high-contrast interace. The Accessibility teamsinput and eorts ocus on a core value o RIM,
empowering peoples ability to communicate.

Technologyon theront lines.
To understand how RIM is helping to improve
medical services, consider the critical role
that inormation plays in a medical practice.
Starting with the question what is wrong?
the quest or inormation triggers a series o
inquiries, tests and diagnoses beore a treatment
plan can be enacted.
Patient inormation is collected verbally,
through observation and with various
diagnostic tests and procedures. It is imperative
that the inormation collected is organized
and shared securely in a manner that makes
it accessible to every member o the team
that administers care.
ADDED VALUE: Vital inormation
is collected y te clinician to
e sared wit te medicalteam. At every step, te aility
to communicate easily and to
ave te rit inormation
readily at and improves te
quality and efciencies o care.
Where can the impact o new technologybest be seen? In the hands o workerson the ront lines. RIM is working withclinicians to urther drive innovation withinthe health-care industry with our powerullineup o BlackBerry smartphones and
the new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

hilitsIn the old paradigm, communication wascumbersome. The ability o doctors, nurses,
therapists, laboratories, paramedics and other
members o a medical team to work together was
tied to the requirement to be in specic places at
coordinated times. The old technology included
a pager, hospital phone and even a ax machine,
and too much time was dedicated to the hunting
and gathering o critical inormation.
BlackBerry solutions aid in the proactive
distribution o vital inormation. Lab test results
are sent electronically to the doctor in real time,
and remote conerencing can take place anytime
and anywhere with all medical team members. When collaboration is time-sensitive, medical
proessionals know when their BBM message
has been delivered and when it has been read.
Labor and delivery nurses can view a babys
etal tracings at the bedside, while the same
images are being transmitted in real time to the
physicians BlackBerry smartphone. Obstetricians
and gynecologists can discuss issues, make an
inormed decision and relay instructions back to
the on-site team. Its time-saving and potentially
lie-saving communication.
Recognizing such potential or technology is
part o the culture at RIM. Multidisciplinary
teams are dedicated to working with leading
health-care institutions to deploy innovative
communication solutions or the medical
community. Combining knowledge o the
health-care environment with knowledge
o communication and application technology
results in a powerul partnership that yields
new and innovative ways to help improve
medical services at the point-o-care.

In 2009 the Corporate Responsibility team
began using the Global e-Sustainability
Initiative (GeSl) tool to identiy key areas
o ocus to be included in the CorporateResponsibility Program. The GeSI tool
ranks the inormation and communication
technology (ICT) industrys areas o
interest against their infuence on business
success and their level o importance to
stakeholders. In addition to GeSI, RIM
approached three stakeholder groups or
eedback on priorities. Gathering input
helped identiy areas o interest or the
Corporate Responsibility Program at RIM.
Based on the entire review process,
RIM ocused on ve key areas o
corporate responsibility in scal 2011:
Product Sustainability
Supply Chain Stakeholder Engagement
Company Carbon Footprint
Communities/Philanthropy
The Corporate Responsibility team

o energy and other resources is imprinted
in our companys DNA. As a result o
RIMs DataSmart technology, BlackBerry

data, BlackBerry smartphones can deliver up
to double or more service than their competitors

Moving toward a more sustainable, holistic
packaging approach reduces RIMs
environmental ootprint in several ways.
New eco-riendly packaging or BlackBerry
smartphones requires less material as the
size and weight o boxes are reduced. The new
design allows or more than twice as many
smartphones to be contained on a single
shipping pallet. With ewer trips or delivery o
the products, more ecient transportationand reduced emissions are achieved.
In spring 2010, RIM was proud to launch
a compact new box design 55% smaller
and 41% lighter or BlackBerry smart-
phones. It is expected that most BlackBerry
smartphone models will be shipped in this
new box size by late 2011. The new box is
also printed with UV inks that are ree o
volatile organic compounds (VOC), easy to
disassemble and 100% recyclable.
Printed paper documentation that ships
with our products has been reduced and
user guides are now available electronically.
Lighter-weight paper is now used or printedinormation and new bands made o recycled
paper bind the printed material on most
products, replacing plastic bags in packaging.

In 2010, RIM introduced a design
standard or core accessories packaging
and plans to make the next generation o
accessories packaging even more sustain-
able, starting with paper-based packaging
or BlackBerry PlayBook tablet accessories.
RIM has an ongoing initiative to select
supplier acilities closer to manuacturing
acilities, reducing the distance traveled
or each packaging component. Goals
or scal 2012 include replacing
petroleum-based elements in packaging
with ber-based materials and packaging
the items as minimally as possible without
sacricing quality.

In 2010, RIM established a dedicated
Product Sustainability team to lead eorts
in reducing the environmental impact o
products. By adopting Design or Environment
principles and ormalizing environmental
considerations into the structured Research
and Development design processes, RIMs
goal is to design more sustainably at each
stage in the product lie cycle.Emphasizing energy eciency during
the design process has resulted in adjustable
settings in the BlackBerry operating system.
Users can eectively maximize battery lie
by modiying settings or the smartphone
screen backlight, browser, media, camera
and network connections. For more battery-
saving tips, visit http://us.blackberry.com/

The new compact BlackBerry charger
is smaller and eatures improved energy
eciency and no-load power consumption
(the amount o power consumed when the
power charger is plugged in but not charging
the smartphone). When connected, the
smartphone stops drawing power rom the
charger once it is ully charged.
RIM is a voluntary participant in the
Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corpora-
tions (RBRC) Call2Recycle program and
the Recycle My Cell program (http://www
.recyclemycell.ca/overview.php). Participa-
tion in these programs acilitates responsible
governance throughout the entire product
lie cycle. RBRC oers inormation regarding
the environmentally sound collection and
recycling o used rechargeable batteries and
cell phones to customers located in Canada
and the U.S. A Canadian industry initiative,
Recycle My Cell, also works to minimize the
amount o e-waste entering Canadas landlls
by raising awareness o where customers
can drop o mobile devices to be recycled.
In early 2011, RIM also launched the
BlackBerry Recycling Program (http://www.blackberry.com/recycling). This program
enables customers in most U.S. states to
responsibly recycle BlackBerry smartphones,
tablets and associated accessories.

RIMs Manuacturing Facility is ISO 14001
certied and employees at this location
are actively involved in the maintenance
o certication. With energy conservation
as an objective, 32 ideas were identied
or savings and using energy-ecient
technologies. Options to avoid utilitywaste through a variety o sources include
HVAC, lighting retrots, steam savings
and shutdowns during holidays. Between
January and December 2010, a total
o 870,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) was
conserved (or the equivalent emission o
185 tons o CO2 were avoided) due to
these eorts. Beginning in 2011, operations
will shit rom hydro conservation to a
more encompassing program o hydro,
natural gas and water conservation.
Employee involvement has resulted in
a 93% waste diversion in 2010 at the
Waterloo Manuacturing Facility. There are
initiatives underway to maximize opportuni-
ties to reduce the impact o renovation
waste and to transer aspects o the
Waterloo acilitys program to our global
manuacturing and supply chain sites.
Employees at RIMs Manuacturing
Facility are engaged through green
champions, education exercises, quizzes,
participation at health airs and in Earth
Hour and Earth Day, as well as suggestion
boxes. These initiatives help build aware-
ness and lead to overall improvements.
Upcoming initiatives include conservation
o natural gas and water, a waste audit and
increased waste reduction opportunities.
The development o an internal cardboard
reduction program through the introduction
o reusable totes will also be introduced.
