Abstract
This thesis discusses the tectonic and metamorphic features of the Western
Himalayan Syntaxis area exposed in NE Pakistan and Azad Kashmir. The Tertiary
collision between the Indian Plate and the Kohistan Island Arc produced a tectonic pile
composed of four main elements (Subhimalaya, Lesser Himalaya, Higher Himalaya
and Kohlstan Sequence), each having characteristic stratlgraphic, structural and
metamorphic features, and which are separated by three main thrust faults (Main
Boundary Thrust. Main Central Thrust and Indus Suture). The large-scale structure is
dominated by the 160° bending of the geological lineaments around a central,
lowermost core (Hazara-Kashmir Syntaxis) and by the northeast continuation of this
syntaxial structure towards the uppermost tectonic element (Nanga Parbat Syntaxis)
and the collision margin (Indus Suture). A lateral correlation between the Himalayan
thrust system of the Hazara-Kashmir Syntaxis and those of the Indian Kashmir and of
the Pakistan Hazara area has been made.
The Subhlmalayan element forms the core of the Hazara Kashmir Syntaxis with
the molassic. Late Paleocene to Middle Eocene Murree Formation. Older Cambrian and
Paleocene rocks are exposed along the ridge of the Muzaffarabad Anticline, which is
the main structural feature of this element. The Lesser Himalaya is composed of a
stack of thrusted units. Characteristically the age and the metamorphic grade of these
units increase northwards, where by the highest tectonic position is occupied by the
oldest rocks (Salkhala Series) showing the highest metamorphic grade (upper
greenschlst facies). A polyphase folded, amphlbolite facies metamorphosed basement
and cover sequence belonging to the Higher Himlaya lies above an important
discontinuity, which represents the continuation of the Main Central Thrust In
Northeast Pakistan. The Indus Suture carried the deep crustal, mafic-ultramafic,
granulitlc basal complex of the Kohistan Sequence above the Higher Himalaya and
resulted in greenschlst facies. retrograde transformation in the hangingwall rocks.
The structures associated with thrust tectonics are imbrication and isoclinal,
recumbent folding of the rocks. Consequently all the lithotypes are permeated by a
strong, first phase schistosity containing a mineral lineation which represents the
tectonic X -stretching direction. All these lineations, measured in the Himalayan
units and in the Kohistan Sequence at Babusar, show a NE - SW oriented direction of
tectonic transport. A superimposed second deformational phase developed a large
scale refolding of the structure and an associated crenulation cleavage .The second
phase folds are continuously traced across all the tectonic elements, which suggests
that this deformation occurred when the tectonic pile was already formed. In addition,
the minerals which form the crenulation cleavage developed under lower grade
8
metamorphic conditions than those of the main, previous ,thrusting-related
deformation. The orientation of the latest phase suggest a NW - SE oriented
compression, confirmed by the lineations found to the west in the Hazara and Indus
Kohistan areas. The geometrical interference between the two deformational phases
led to the doming of the Subhimalayan element and therefore to the formation of the
Hazara-Kasmir Syntaxis. A series of smaller "domes and synformal basins" are also
recognized northeastwards in the upper tectonic elements.
The metamorphism is of Barrowian Type in both Lesser and Higher Himalayan
units, and represent an inverted zoning pattern. Microtextural analysis reveals that
the metamorphic peak was reached during the first, penetrative deformational phase.
Features related to thrusting (quartz fabrics and retrograde mineral transformations)
suggest that metamorphism and tectonics are intimately related. A model of a
progressive southwards propagation of deformation best explains these observations:
the deformation within the Himalayas started with the development of the Main
Central Thrust and migrated across the lower tectonic units, with a changing
rheologlcal behaviour and strain regime as it reached shallower and lower
metamorphic crustal levels.
A model for the tectonic and metamorphic evolution of the Western Himalayan
Syntaxis area is proposed. It is based on the geometrical superposition of the
deformational phase as detected by the small- and large-scale structures and by the*
pressure-temperature history of the collected samples. The collision started in the Late
Cretaceous with the development of the high pressure basement complex of the
Kohistan Sequence, which has been subsequently (Eocene - post Eocene) thrusted over
the Himalayan realm. The nappe structure In the Higher Himlaya could therefore form
under amphibollte facies conditions. The Early Miocene development or the Main
Central Thrust initiated the metamorphic inverted zoning pattern, producing
deformation and metamorphism in the Lesser Himalayan sequences. The folding of
the Subhimalayan rocks (Muzaffarabad Anticline) could have originated during this
tectono-metamorphic phase. Post- Early to Middle Eocene is the development of the
Main Boundary Thrust and the anticlockwise rotation of the transport direction from
the NE-SW oriented system of the Kashmir Himalayas to the NNW-SSE one of North
Pakistan (Kohistan and Hazara). The gepmetrical superposition of the two transport
directions produced the doming and perhaps initiated a rapid uplift of the area as early
as 15 my ago. This rapid uplift preserved the inverse metamorphic pattern and
brought the deepest structures of the Hazara and Nanga Parbat Syntaxes to the actual
erosional level of exposition.

(Main Boundary Thrust, Main Central Thrust e Indus Suture), presentano
suddivlsibili in diverse unita tettoniche. L'assetto strutturale regionale e domlnato
prolunga verso nordest negli elementi tettonlci superiori (Nanga Parbat Syntaxis) e
verso l'alto strutturale (nordest). Infatti 1' unita superiore e composta dalle rocce piu
coricate e contenenti paragenesi minerali in facies anfibolitica.
sopra dell'Higher Himalaya.

Central Thrust e mlgro attraverso livelli crostali piu superficiali. cambiando cosi
Queste rocce granulitiche sono state
11
L' ultima fase
tetlono-metamorfica (posl-Miocene inferiore-medio) corrisponde alia rolazione
