PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEBob Russo

Pollution controls I Crash tests IBumper standards I Seat belts I Airbags! What is the automotive worldcoming to? Some of the above arealready a part of our Porsches, someare yet to comeo How do all of theseaffect Porsches as we once knew them?

Probably the most notorious of theabove, pollution controls, are easilyrecognizable by the myriad tubes, valves and solenoids that one findsnestled in the engine compartmentsof all makes of cars, A short drive

in a "clean" car quickly points outthat dirty cars are smoother, and inmany cases, faster. Yes, it's truethat I've been known to complainabout the pollution devices; however, there are certain sobering facts thatmake me think twice — things likeCalifornia smog, the incidence oflung cancer and the nearly threehundred species of mammals threatened with extinction make me realizethat man is fast approaching a pointof no return.

The sleek, low frontal area 900 carsthat some Porsche engineer slavedmany an hour over is soon to become

a thing of the past. New safety andbumper regulations for 1975 requirecertain minimum heights which willdrastically alter the styling ofmany cars, particularly Porsches.

Of course, the latest nemesis to theautomobile is the "energy crisis".Rumors of gasoline costing sixtycents a gallon by the end of summerare becoming a reality. Prices havealready begun to rise a few cents.Supposedly by the end of the year, gasoline prices of a dollar pergallon will be commonplace! And aspollution standards become stricterwe only compound the problem, sincemore gasoline is required to get thesame horsepower from a "clean" engine.

Some of the above problems with whichwe are faced are founded on necessityfor survival, others are political innature. The effect on people such asourselves is profound. The days ofunlimited carefree driving are reallynumbered. Enjoy your Porsche NOWbecause in the not-so-distant futureyou may not be able to blithely hopinto the car for a no-purpose rideto "clean out the carbon'.*

sex/Ah, I knew that would get your attention. Now calm down foran important announcement. The location of our monthly meetinghas been changed. Starting with the June 27 meeting, we willgo to Beck's Restaurant in King of Prussia. We will have a barin a private room. It's easy to find, right on Rt 202 - twotraffic lights north of BCLng of Prussia Shopping Center at thetop of the hill is another smaller shopping center. Beck's isin there. Meeting time remains the same - 8:00.

NOT A TOTAL WASHOUT

Bob Koerbel

The Riesentoter Luck was once againwith us as the April Sprint Schoolstarted in rain and a little snow.

Thirteen Porsches and 21 very hardysouls turned out to see what theycould do on the wet track. Unfortunately, most drivers were the oldtimers. I guess the new members andnovice drivers don't realize thatRiesentoter runs rain or shine.

At first the track was only wet, butas time went on a little mud was add

ed (by those who were learning thatthe quickest way around a track is tostay on it). The track got better, the driving got better and so didthe weather, finally.

Remember, rain or shine, anotherSprint School on May 20. There willbe experienced drivers on hand toteach you proper driving techniquesand hopefully get you interested indriving your Porsche for enjoymentin an area where you don't have toworry about traffic, violations orspeeding. See you May 20.

LIME ROCK REVIEW

Joe Long

The weather couldn't have been nicerfor Northern New Jersey's DrivingSchool at Lime Rock. It was chillyin the morning, but as the day rolledon the temp climbed to the mid 80*s,

I had the unique privilege of beingCHAUFFEURED by Dennis Thovson in his911S equipped with Goodyear racingtires. Those were the fastest lapsI experienced all day - Dennis is anexcellent driver.

Riesentoter Region was representedthat day by Tom O'Rourke, Bob Mc-Cullen and rryself with our 911s, Wewere joined later by Bob Russo andWayne Flegler with their Cherry RedCream Puff C Coupe.

Things ran smoothly throughout theday without serious mishaps, thougha black flag was directed to theCherry Red Cream Puff C Coupe. Ihad noticed the car emitting a cloudof blue smoke on the pit straight, obstructing the view of drivers trying to pass. Later in the pits, Iheard the driver explaining how oneJames Bond used the same techniqueto hold off the competition in oneof his movies. It seems that the

driver was setting up his car fora big race at Pocono in May, I hopeI don't have to follow him aroundthe track at Pocono - he may try theoilslick trick there.

All in all, a valuable experience, and I'm certainly looking forward tothe Porscherama this fall.

POCONO PANIC

Herb Oberson

Having been a member of the club fornearly 2 years, and restrictingparticipation in club events to meetings, rallies and social affairs, Ifound that I still didn't feel likea dyed in the wool Porsche-Pusher;never had I autocrossed or entered

any form of competitive speed event, even during the 1972 Porsche Paradeat Lake Geneva, Of course, everyonealways asked me when I was going tostart "driving" my car, but I had abag full of excuses:

a. I have more fun just watchingbo The car (a 912) has never been

run at speed, and 1*11 probablyblow the engine

Co I get dizzy going in circlesdo Somebody has to work the corners Ie. 1*11 be out of town on businessf. Since it was raining on Sunday,

I didn't think anyone would showgo Jfy hangnail was so bad I couldn't

get my hand into ny Jim Clarkedriving glove

h. My helmet's not Snell approved(label removed after purchase)

i. I only have one kidney

Finally, I could think of no moreexcuses; also, X wanted to get allthose people off my back. I signedup for Pocono 731

One week and many Librium capsuleslater, but still with pounding heart,I awaited the flag to send me on theautocross. Soft music drifted over

the stereo in a last ditch effort to

calm my nerves; this failed too, Itried to think of more terrifyingsituations in which I had found myself in the past. There weren'tany. The ominous flag descended;the adrenalin gushed into my bloodstream, and the car surged forthalmost as if by an invisible hand.

The ghost of Ferdinand Porsche musthave guided the car around the course. All I remember are a dry mouth, thesudden need for a bathroom, screeching tires, the smell of burning rubber (the elastic in my shorts?), andan almost irresistible urge to getsick -- really sick. Suddenly it wasover. I mada it I I didn't knockdown any pylons, I didn't run overthe flagman (to the best of my knowledge) and the car was intact. Ididn't care that I finished last inmy class; bring on the road course! But ny confidence was to be shortlived.

White knuckles gripping the wheel, Iagain awaited the starter's flag, thistime for two trips around the 1.8 mileroad course. If it had been 180 miles,it couldn't have been worse. I beganto think I was a masochist, tfy helmetwas too tight and giving me a sickheadache. Fortunately, I soon becamenumb and the headache went away. Theshoulder harness prevented me fromkeeling over. The flag went down andI was off.

The grandstand at my side passed byin a blur; then, when I swiveled my

Page 11: RIESENTOTER PCA - MAY 73 OER GASSER · 2014. 9. 22. · contact Lillian Hanna, 215-EL6-6283 June 9 - PRCA Novice Series Rally, Shirley Cornforth, 609-386-3476 ... lung cancer and

head and looked through the windshield, I saw the 1st turn wall approaching me at a high rate of speed.Swerving to the right, my body, likeHoudini, desperately tried to escapethe grasp of the belts and rocketthrough the door onto the track. Remaining master of the machine, I cutonto the road course. Thanks to TedWay's earlier advice during a fewpractice runs, along with ray highretention rate, I raaneuvered throughthe treacherous right and left handturns with all the grace of a rhinoceros on roller skates running froma blazing jungle fire. Nevertheless,I made it without serious incident

and rounded the last turn toward thefinish line, the summit of MountEverest to me. I prayed, to avoidembarrassment, that I had broken thetwo minute mark, and later, much to

pleasure, found that I had turneda 1:52. While again last in ny particular class, I was now well awareof ray own and ray Porsche's prowessand potential - and it only took metwo years to find out.

When the full Tri-Oval was openedfor touring, I circled the track atspeeds up to a "blistering" 95 mph.I felt as though I were driving onthe rim of an old-fashioned woodenapple barrel. Bob Koerbel joined methen, and I put it all together. Ithought Bob was putting me on whenhe told me to "floor it" and steertoward the inside of the track inthe midst of my attempt to negotiatea tricky turn at a 90 raph clip, butI followed his orders and came out of

the turn at 95, passing the grandstand at 105. An increase of 10 raphover the top speed I had attained onmy own! What a few words of wisdomwill do.

How do you best describe the sensation and thrill of driving a Porsche100+ mph on a track like Pocono? You don't! What you do is go thereand give it a whirl yourself. Thesame holds true for all our club'svaried activities, PARTICIPATE TOappreciate! Don't waste two years,as I did, to experience what you'vebeen missing right along. That'slike marrying Raquel Welch andspending the first couple of yearstaking her to "X" rated movies. What else can I say?

tfy heartfelt thanks to all those whomake Riesentoter Region and all ofour "happenings" possible. I consider it a privilege to be associated with everyone in the club andto have added Pocono Panic to nyfast growing list of memorable clubevents, I call it "having fun".

POCONO 73

Bob Russo

Those of you who attended Pocono 71-72 remember the wet weather condi

tions that we had to battle. When

we planned Pocono 73 we felt thatthe chances of our having rain againwere about 3 in 1095. But just tobe sure we decided to try an earliermonth so that even if it did rain,it would be warm rain. Well - wouldyou believe - we had precipitation, but it was snow! The weekend ofMay 5-6 saw record low temperatures, and where were we - standing, sitting, freezing at Pocono InternationalRaceway.

Following a rambling introduction byyours truly, about 70 drivers werereleased from the warmth of the PIRcafeteria to be instructed, perfecttheir driving skills or help flag. The r.ovicer received a blackboard

session of driving basics from Dennis Thovson of Northern New Jerseyregion before they were allowed toscare themselves to death on the

track.

Unfortunately, we saw the demise ofat least four cars. Chuck Boschen, notorious for the fire extinguisherat Pocono 71, threw a rod Friday onthe way to the track. Bob Hollanddestroyed the right chain tensionerin his 911 - (last year he did thesame thing to the left side!!) DaveDuerr misshifted coming off the Tri-Oval and bent a couple of exhaustvalves. Bill Schmidt packed it upwith a malfuiictioning injection pump.

Following a banquet-type dinner atPocono Manor, quite a few peopletook advantage of the entertainmentavailable. As usual, xi/hen Porsche-pushers gather, a good time was hadby all. The social side of a weekendsuch as Pocono affords the opportunityto get to know better the people ofour region and make new friends fromthe surrounding regions.

Sunday dawned brighter and slightlywarmer which brought a few new driversout of the woodwork to try their handsat the competitive events. About 80cars were classed and scheduled to run

either the autocross or the timed lapduring the morning. After overcominga few organizational problems, suchas no electricity for the timer, wegot underway. In the afternoon, thecars from the autocross tried their

skill at the timed lap and vice-versa.

Thanks are always in order for such anevent. The people of Heinrich's P-A,Holbert's P-A, Willis P-A, and VW ofAmerica, Porsche-Audi Division, sometimes go unrecognized in the excitement of the weekend, but without them,it would be near impossible for theclub to finance the event. Our most

heartfelt thanks to these fine peoplefor their most generous contributions.Of course, all the many people fromour region and those from the otherregions deserve a great deal of gratitude for enabling us to put on a verysuccessful two days. All the many

participants and especially the volunteer workers are really what makesit all happen.

A TECH ARTICLE

Wayne Flegler

There are many techniques for adjusting valves and most technical manualsgive a good description of how toperform the various operations involved. The one step they oftenoverlook is how to install the valve

cover gasket so that you don't endup with clouds of oil smoke on yourmuffler.

All gaskets used on Porsche coversare cork, though some 914 gaskets area composition material. Generally,if the gasket comes off in one pieceand feels soft, it can be reused. In most cases, however, it is betterto replace, which brings up a methodI have found to be successful.

I have been using gaskets on my 356Bthat were ordered from Performance

Products. They are thicker and perfectly shaped. If you want to savetime when adjusting valves, purchaseabout six gaskets, soak them in water, stretch them over a spare valve cover, and they will be ready to use thenext time. This applies to 356, 914and 912 only. The 911 cam covergaskets always seem to fit.

The next thing to do is throw awayyour Permatex, 3M Cement or whatever you have been using to gluethe gasket in place. The best thingI have found is chassis lube or

wheel bearing grease. It holds thegasket in place and allows for easyremoval at the next adjustment. Youshould put the grease on both sidesof the gasket. I usually clean themating surface on the valve coverwith a wire wheel and sandpaper untilI have a clean, bare metal finish.I have yet to experience any leakageproblems. By the way, on 911s, becareful not to over torque the nuts. Also, be sure to specify the properyear - about 1969 the cam covergaskets were changed.

On 356, 914 and 9l2s, the spring barthat holds the cover in place sometimes loses its tension. It should

be replaced if you have leaks andeverything else seems in order. Youcan put them in a vise and belt themwith a hammer to put some of thetension back.

COOL 111Marty Gorce

A few of us are using 912 oil coolers on 356 engines. To those who are,a prediction; your oil cooler flangewill eventually crack. Mine finallywent after 11,000 miles and I know oftwo others that cracked. It may bethe vibration, the increase in weight,or because the mounting holes have tobe drilled slightly larger, or maybea combination, but it happens.

For those who are wondering why anyone would put on a 912 oil cooler, there are two good reasons; cheaperand more efficient.

What to do with a cracked oil cooler

flange? You can have it welded, which means a complete teardown of

your engine, or you can buy a newcase, which means likewise, or ifyou're broke, which I usually am,you can epoxy the piece back on,which means about an hour's work anda 24 hour wait while the glue dries.(It's the waiting that gets you.)

If you decide to epoxy it, heed thefollowing tips: clean both surfacesand the top of the flange with acetone. Cut a sheet metal "gasket" toglue to the top of the flange togive it extra support. Drill andsleeve the two oil ducts. If you dothese three things, you'll end upwith a sturdy, leakproof unit almostas good as new, (PORSCHE PATTER,Rocky Mtn, Region)

PORSCHE PIT STOP

Bob McCullen

On April 15, the new Porsche CarreraRSR entered and conquered yet anotherstyle of racing, the Trans-Am Seriesopener at Road Atlanta. RiesentoterRegion was represented by A1 Holbert,an outstanding driver and builder, driving the ex-Penske/Donahue car.The Carreras finished 1-2 with Peter

Gregg first and A1 9 seconds back. While it appears that the Carrerasmay dominate the series, they reallyhave their work cut out for them.

The best they could do in qualifyingwas seventh for A1 and 8th for Peter.

Ahead of them were two Corvettes, aCapri, 2 Camaros and a Mustang withonly 3 seconds between the first 8cars.

Some of the faster competition waseliminated by various problems andthis, along with excellent driving, allowed Gregg and Holbert to takeover the 1-2 spots rather early on.The two Carreras continued to battle

for the entire race, including a veryexciting pit stop for both teams, with only seconds separating them forthe entire distance. A1 felt that

Gregg won due to his greater experience in this type racing, as well asa few lucky breaks. On the otherside, Gregg praised Holbert, stating,"you have just seen the emergence ofa new star".

Meanwhile in the B^A Series, ourRiesentoter Region Race Team of MikeTillson and Dieter Oest was conqjet-

ing in the Starlight Three Hour, a

night race at the Daytona International Speedway. With a race distance ofonly 327 miles, the team decided toconcentrate their efforts in one 911S

in the under 2.5 liter class. The

disadvantages of a one car entry wereimmediately apparent, however, whena malfunctioning limited slip led tohandling problems in qualifying, andthey didn't have a replacement onhand. As a result, they qualified27th out of 70. However, among thetop ten qualifiers were 4 Carreras, one of them belonging to none otherthan Peter Gregg.

Since over half the course is made upof the Speedway circuit, the morepowerful Corvettes were capable of190+ whereas the Carreras could man

age only about 175. In such a shortrace, the Vettes were heavily favored. However, with the 427 enginesusing twice the fuel as the Porsches, they required twice as many pit stops. This factor, more than anything else, led Gregg to his fourth win in asmany races.

Back in the pack. Dieter and Mike wereholding their own, just about to passthe third and second cars in their

class, when they burned a valve. This was their first DNF due to enginefailure in 2% years of racing Porsches.

They did finish 7th in G.T.U. to givethem a tie for 5th place in the IMSAUnder 2.5 Liter Series.
