FOUR WOMAN CYCLING TEAM
Team Ride Red Partners With The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® Initiative To Show Importance Of Diet and Exercise For Wom-en’s Heart Health.
One in three American women die from cardio-vascular disease and 90% of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. Team Ride Red is partnering with GoRed for Women of Central Texas to help bring a voice to and take action against this silent killer. “Even though we have made great strides, heart dis-ease remains the number-one killer of women and too many women still die because they are unaware of how they can reduce their risk,” said Erika Holland, Executive Director of the Ameri-can Heart Association Capital Area Division. “We are pleased that the four athletic women who comprise Team Ride Red are willing to go to such extraordinary lengths to help raise funds and spread awareness to fight this largely prevent-able disease.”
The Austin, Texas based team is comprised of four women over the age of 40: Susan Farago, Carol Pope, Vicki Ford, and Sue Schrader. Part-nership with the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women program is a perfect fit to the team’s overall goal. “This is a prime opportunity to empower women to realize that our health is our responsibility so we want to drop the ham-
mer on heart disease,” said Susan Farago. “My family has a strong history of early heart attacks so heart health is my top fitness priority. It has to be.”
“It has been so energizing sharing our team’s goals and mission with people we have met at Interbike,” said Vicki Ford. “Not only are they excited about our team and the race, they want to support us and share our goal of educating women on the signs, symptoms, and preven-tion of heart disease. With the support of these sponsors, we can’t wait to get to the start line in Oceanside, CA.”
George Thomas, race director for Race Across America, said, “We are very excited to have Team Ride Red racing in 2011. They are strong women and what better way to promote health and fitness than having these women race 3,000 miles.” While female racers only make up a small percentage of the RAAM race field, their numbers are slowly growing. The Race Across America is celebrating their 30th year of coast to coast bicycle racing as 250 competitors from 25 countries cross 12 states from the start line in Oceanside, California to the finish line in An-napolis, Maryland. Solo riders have up to 12 days to complete the distance and teams have up to nine days. Race Across America participants raise over two million dollars for charity annually.
