THE TRIBUNE. The Nature of Money. To the Editor cf the Tribun* : In the Tribune of August ü Uli, in your remarks upon the work entitled 48 Usury; The Evil and the Remedy,' you say, 44 We do not quite agree * frith iu fundamental pioposition that'Money is a'mea- **ure of value,' and tli.it only- Unquestionably the most * frecpaent use of mon>-\ it to nwsure value, But vrh>-ii a " man borrows $10,000, does he merely borrow something ti * measure with ? Does he not rather in effect borrow r*-:.l * value? though of what precise kind depends upon his own ' choice. If he wanU to buy a farm with it, th»-u he in sub- * stance borrows the farm, and so if his need be buiidmg,?pro- * visions or whatever. He does not borrow something ' wherewith to measure the sums due his laborers, Sec, 1 ' the actual means of paving them, o.actlv as though he bor« 4 rowed ten thousand biub»ls of wheat and agreed to pay ' seven hundred bushels a j ear for use until be could return * the grain." I have, Mr. Editor, carefully read the essay, and have arrived at a different conclusion from yourself. I think it is clearly shown that 4 Money is only a measure of value'; and had the author pursued the subject farther, he would probably have furnished more evidence and other illustra. tions. If you will re-examine the author's re¬ marks upon this point, I believe you will be con¬ vinced that there is no value in money as such except what is given it by law. It is never in itself, to any great extent, the product of previous labor. I saw in your paper of the 2lid instant, a visit by Mr. Weed to the Bank of England, in which he mentions that while in the Bank he had put into his hands £2,000,000 sterling, say $20,- 000,000.more, he thinks, than all the wealth of John Jacob Astor. Now, .Sir. do you suppose there had been that amount of labor spent to mike this money ? From the description given of roll¬ ing and numbering the sheets, the whole of them did not cost more labor when performed than a man would do in one week hoeing potatoes.. Therefore this money is not the product of this immense labor, but it will measure the $20,000,- 000 worth of labor when performed, or buy the amount in farms or other tilings as the holder may choose. Just so a yard-stick may measure twenty miilio.i yards oi" cloth, and though the yard-slick would not be worth as much as the cloth, stiil it is necessary to have it, and it is more necessary to have money for the exchange of products than to have the yard to test the length. Suppose a man without food or clothing to be cast on a desert island and a sliij) to pass by laden with gold, and lie were to borrow of the Captain a hundred guineas in gold, what relief would the gold or any other kind of money, paper or specie, be to him ? "Should he borrow the same amount in flour and other provisions, clothing, &c. which this gold or money is made by law to represent, his condition would be bettered, but he would be in no manner benefited by the money. Suppose a dozen men were on tin's island a vessel passing laden with ground plaster of Baris, they should procure a barrel of it from the Captain, who tells them it is flour. Should they all believe it to be flour, make it into bread and eat it, would this be¬ lief make it sustain life 1 Not at all, it would not invigorate the system, nor answer the purpose lor which they had designed it. But suppose a man to pass to you, Mr. Editor, a counterfeit dollar, whether of silver or paper, iic and you both believing it to be good, and the same dollar should continue for a thousand years to pass from one to another, each and all believ¬ ing it to be good, it would answer the purpose for which it was designed as well as a good dollar. When it was discovered to be a counterfeit, the holder would lose wiiat this measure of value would represent in property and he would be de¬ frauded of the amount, because it was put in cir¬ culation contrary to law and was a fraud on the public. \f I have not suceeded in removing your doubts of money being a measure only, 1 must sec still stronger objections than those already made to convince mc that it is any thing else when used as a currency. Although I formerly entertained a different opinion yet14 Usury; the Evil and the Remedy," has proved to mc that it is nothing but a measure. If it will not be asking too much, please insert this communication in your valuable paper and oblige A SUBSCRIBER. MORNING LINE.For Albany and Troy, and intermediate landings. THE TRIBUNE.The Nature of Money.

To the Editor cf the Tribun* :

In the Tribune of August ü Uli, in your remarksupon the work entitled 48 Usury; The Evil andthe Remedy,' you say, 44 We do not quite agree* frith iu fundamental pioposition that'Money is a'mea-**ure of value,' and tli.it only- Unquestionably the most* frecpaent use of mon>-\ it to nwsure value, But vrh>-ii a

" man borrows $10,000, does he merely borrow something ti* measure with ? Does he not rather in effect borrow r*-:.l* value? though of what precise kind depends upon his own' choice. If he wanU to buy a farm with it, th»-u he in sub-* stance borrows the farm, and so if his need be buiidmg,?pro-* visions or whatever. He does not borrow something' wherewith to measure the sums due his laborers, Sec, 1' the actual means of paving them, o.actlv as though he bor«4 rowed ten thousand biub»ls ofwheat and agreed to pay' seven hundred bushels a j ear for use until be could return* the grain."

I have, Mr. Editor, carefully read the essay, and have arrived at a different conclusion from

yourself. I think it is clearlyshown that 4 Moneyis only a measure of value'; and had the author

pursued the subject farther, he would probablyhave furnished more evidence and other illustra.tions. If you will re-examine the author's re¬

marks upon this point, I believe you will be con¬

vinced that there is no value in money as suchexcept what is given it by law. It is never initself, to any great extent, the product of previouslabor. I saw in your paper of the 2lid instant, a

visit by Mr. Weed to the Bank of England, inwhich he mentions that while in the Bank he hadput into his hands £2,000,000 sterling, say $20,-000,000.more, he thinks, than all the wealth ofJohn Jacob Astor. Now, .Sir. do you supposethere had been that amount oflabor spent to mikethis money ? From the description given of roll¬ing and numbering the sheets, the whole of themdid not cost more labor when performed than a

man would do in one week hoeing potatoes..Therefore this money is not the product of thisimmense labor, but it will measure the $20,000,-000 worth of labor when performed, or buy theamount in farms or other tilings as the holdermay choose. Just so a yard-stick may measure

twenty miilio.i yards oi" cloth, and though theyard-slick would not be worth as much as thecloth, stiil it is necessary to have it, and it ismore necessary to have money for the exchangeof products than to have the yard to test thelength.

Suppose a man without food or clothing to becast on a desert island and a sliij) to pass by ladenwith gold, and lie were to borrow of the Captaina hundred guineas in gold, what relief would thegold or any other kind of money, paper or specie,be to him ? "Should he borrow the same amountin flour and other provisions, clothing, &c. whichthis gold or money is made by law to represent, his condition would be bettered, but he would bein no manner benefited by the money. Supposea dozen men were on tin's island a vessel passingladen with ground plaster of Baris, they shouldprocure a barrel of it from the Captain, who tellsthem it is flour. Should they all believe it to beflour, make it into bread and eat it, would this be¬lief make it sustain life 1 Not at all, it would not

invigorate the system, nor answer the purpose lorwhich they had designed it.But suppose a man to pass to you, Mr. Editor,

a counterfeit dollar, whether of silver or paper, iicand you both believing it to be good, and thesame dollar should continue for a thousand yearsto pass from one to another, each and all believ¬ing it to be good, it would answer the purpose forwhich it was designed as well as a good dollar. When it was discovered to be a counterfeit, theholder would lose wiiat this measure of valuewould represent in property and he would be de¬frauded of the amount, because it was put in cir¬culation contrary to law and was a fraud on thepublic. \f I have not suceeded in removing yourdoubts of money being a measure only, 1 mustsec still stronger objections than those alreadymade to convince mc that it is any thing elsewhen used as a currency. Although I formerlyentertained a different opinion yet14 Usury; theEvil and the Remedy," has proved to mc that itis nothing but a measure.
