2010/2011Chairman’s WelcomeWelcome to the RICS matrics Annual Review of the 2010-11Well here we are again, another year completed and another welcome note from myself, Mark Humphries.

RICS matrics is the part of the RICS for students, trainees and those newly qualified. There is no age criteria to being a member of RICS matrics and membership is automatic and free.

It has been another busy year across RICS matrics, from local dinners and New Member Receptions to National Assemblies and Governing Council Meetings.

I have been pleased to hear local groups seeing attendance at events pick up again and employer support returning. Annual Dinners have again been held within many local groups as result of demand and are proving to be as popular as ever. In total, RICS matrics groups have held nearly 500 events across the UK this year.

The new RICS matrics UK Board is finding it’s feet and has a good working relationship with both the UK World Regional Board and Governing Council. We have appointments on the Strategy Advisory Group and the Nominations Committee, all of which are important RICS groups and shows a clear intent by the RICS to ensure the voice of the student, trainee and newly qualified member is heard at the highest level.

Of course it is not just RICS matrics that has a new board and structure, The UK World Regional board is now formed and fully operational, to whom we offer our support. The leadership team for the RICS has a new Hon Secretary, Hon Treasurer, new vice presidents and of course our first President from outside of the UK.

This year has seen the use of Facebook, virtual communities and LinkedIn become an important part of the RICS matrics community. It is an easy way to stay in touch without having to leave your desk and I hope that it will continue to grow for many years to come.

I will leave the next few pages of this report to highlight all the good work going on at a local level, but would take this opportunity to thank all the RICS matrics groups for the hard work put in throughout the year. I have been fortunate enough to have visited most of the RICS regional teams and without fail every time I am told how active the local RICS matrics groups are and this reminds me what a privilege it is to be RICS matrics UK Chairman.

Having been the first chairman to have served for two years in the chair since the end of WWII, I can tell you all how proud of the RICS matrics members I am and how excited I am at the global prospects we are facing. As members you are hugely respected, your views and opinions and always invited and well received within the RICS. If you have the time then I urge you, quite simply, get involved!

Thank you to you all and enjoy the following pages and keep up the good work!

RICS matricsWhat’s the PurposeThe main aims of RICS matrics are fundamentally to support students, trainees and those newly qualified in building good relationships, enhancing career development and enabling the voice of younger members to build the future surveying profession – in a fun, relaxed environment.

BenefitsRICS matrics helps by providing a unique environment locally, regionally, nationally and internationally for younger members and students to network and establish a wide matrix of contacts. This is not the only benefit of becoming involved with RICS matrics, there are many others. Student members will have access to technical information and support from the RICS through an ambassador scheme currently being developed. In addition to this events are held with employers enabling future recruitment opportunities to be highlighted and connections to be made. Graduates and RICS trainees can benefit from building employer relationships early in their careers or whilst on placement as members of RICS matrics too. APC support groups and mock APC interviews are also provided locally for members.

RICS matrics UKIn October 2010 a new RICS matrics UK Board was formed with members being selected and appointed against a skills matrix. The Board is now well established and has worked hard to build relationships and engage with other sectors of the RICS. Five key objectives have been agreed each with a member champion for each –

1 Schools and careers – promoting the profession of surveying in schools

2 University ambassadors – promoting the profession and membership of RICS – highlighting the benefits and how to get ahead of the competition.

3 Communications and promotion – ensuring that members of the profession are aware of the opportunities available and working towards to ensuring greater awareness by the general public.

4 Global platform – ensuring that RICS matrics has a global platform for members to work internationally and obtain the same benefits.

5 Future of the profession – strategy work ensuring the profession of surveying remains relevant to its markets.

All RICS matrics members are invited to become involved and contribute to the work of these groups – anyone interested can contact [email protected] or by telephoning the RICS matrics central office on 020 7334 3794.

LocallyRICS matrics is mainly a UK based organisation with over 39 local groups located across the UK all who:

• Help develop RICS membership by hosting New Members Receptions

• Provide social events such as golf, football, annual balls, go-karting.

• Provide inter-professional networking events.

• Provide opportunities for members to enhance their own professional development.

• Work with schools and universities to promote the profession and encourage members.

• Contribute to raising the profile of surveying via newsletters, trade journals, the website etc.

• Provide local forums for consultation on the future of the profession.

• Have fun!

A full list of local groups and events being held are available on the RICS matrics web pages, www.rics.org/matrics.

RICS matrics AssembliesAutumn 2010 HampshireThe first assembly of Chairman Mark Humphries’ second term in office saw the inaugural meeting of the newly formed RICS matrics UK Board at the Marwell Hotel in Hampshire. The board members met prior to the main assembly to meet one another and start to shape a direction for the year ahead.

Ian McRae, Chairman of the Communications Board, presented the outcomes of the Membership Survey and welcomed constructive feedback from those present.

Results from the inaugural RICS matrics questionnaire were relayed and discussed before working groups were formed and looked at key areas of the UK Business Plan.

The final item on the agenda for the day was a session entitled ‘Voice of the Young Professional’. Subjects such as social media, the APC, equal opportunities and global expansion were all discussed from the perspective of the members in attendance.

The evening saw the attendees visit neighbouring Marwell Zoo for a twilight safari before an evening BBQ which was forced inside due to a predictable downpour.

Spring 2011 DerbyshireThe Yew Lodge Hotel in Kegworth was the venue for the second assembly of the session in March held on the same day as Red Nose Day (below). The day opened with a roundup of national news followed by feedback from the recent UK World Regional Workshop in Manchester and the views of those who attended.

With Mark Humphries due to stand down at the end of 2010/11, the elections for Vice-Chairman Elect were held with Tim Richards, Chairman of England, kindly adjudicating. Matthew Wallace of EC Harris was voted in as the RICS matrics Vice-Chair Elect and will take seat for the 2011/12 session.

After lunch, the attendees were given a presentation on The Principles of Marketing & Promotion by a representative of the Chartered Institute of Marketing which then provided topics for working groups to submit a marketing initiative each. Tim Richards then delivered a light-hearted session on Motivation & Engagement which was followed by Local Group Management in which local group chairmen were given guidance on business planning and proposed changes in local group management.

In keeping with form, the evening provided an opportunity to relax and socialise whilst maintaining a healthy competitive edge in a variety of team puzzles and challenges to end a productive day.

RICS matrics AwardsThe 1913 Wilderness Club AwardsIn 1913 younger members of the Surveyors Institution established a group for Junior Members who had qualified by way of examination and under a certain age limit.Younger Quantity Surveyors felt the need for their own club and approached the 1913 Club and adopted their rules as a basis when they formed the “The Wilderness” in 1950. The name arose from the desire to encourage those who were in the “between” stage. The purpose of both Clubs was: to keep together members of the RICS who had been actively involved in the affairs of the JO (now know as RICS matrics) /JO Quantity Surveyors; to continue associations made during JO days; to increase interest in the JO by discussion and furtherance of matters of interest to the profession and the Institution and to encourage support of the Benevolent Fund of the Institution. In the summer of 2000 the two clubs merged to form “The 1913 Wilderness Club”.

The 1913 Wildness Club continues to grow and to support RICS matrics fully. The Club annually makes three awards to RICS matrics – the 2010/11 awards were presented at the Wilderness Club dinner in December 2011.

1913 Branch Award – Glasgow & WestThe 1913 Branch Award is given to the RICS matrics group who are considered to have contributed most within the year. Judging is undertaken by the RICS matrics Chairman and the Chairman of the 1913 Wilderness Club by reviewing the reports submitted by the local groups The recipient of the 2010-11 award was RICS matrics Glasgow & West, chaired by Kerri McGuire of Savills.

Throughout 2010-11, Glasgow & West have held no less than 16 CPD sessions and other seminars on top of an active social calendar that featured pub quizzes, a charity ceilidh and a host of other activities.

In addition to all of the above, the group attended many careers fairs and supported membership growth initiatives undertaken by RICS Scotland.

1913 Special Award – Simon Finlay, Merseyside & IoMSimon Finlay from Liverpool was awarded the 1913 Wilderness Club Special Award for 2010-11. The Special Award is presented to the individual who, in the opinion of the RICS matrics UK Chairman, has contributed the most significantly at a local level.

Mark Humphries was keen to reward Simon’s efforts as chairman of Merseyside & IoM. Despite changes within the year, Simon remained positive, motivated and keen to gain to a resolution to better working operations for the group and approached the challenges presented with professionalism.

1913 Individual Award – Sally Lewis, RICS matrics UK BoardSally Lewis of Faithful & Gould has been an active member of RICS matrics at a local and national level for over five years. During this time, as well as being chairman of RICS matrics Derbyshire, Sally was a member of RICS matrics UK Council before going on to be appointed to the RICS matrics UK Board upon its formation.

Sally has been given the 1913 Individual Award to recognise her passion and drive during her time as a Council/Board member and for her enthusiasm in driving forward initiatives relating to Membership Development.

Membership Development & StudentsNew Groups2010-11 was a good year of growth for RICS matrics with new groups being established in Gloucestershire and Coventry & Warwick. The number of active RICS matrics groups continues to go from strength to strength and at the end of 2010-11 stood at 39 with this number expected to continue to rise in future years.

New Member ReceptionsRICS matrics New Member Receptions are one of the most effective ways of attracting interest in local RICS matrics activities and for new members to gain an understanding of the benefits of RICS matrics and all that it offers.

Throughout the 2010-11 session, RICS matrics local groups were able to successfully hold over 39 new member events with in excess of 1 700 attendees.

RICS matrics Derbyshire held a number of smaller New Member Receptions around the smaller towns in the area to attract those who were not able to make the larger sessions.

RICS matrics Kent welcomed their new members by combining their three receptions with social events that included ten-pin bowling and a boat trip.

Student LiaisonMore often than not, first experiences of RICS matrics, and indeed the RICS, are as a student, be that school, college or university.

RICS matrics recognises the importance of student contact and the two-way benefits that it brings.

During 2010-11, RICS matrics local groups met with a total of 3 361 students via careers fairs to promote surveying as a profession, at prize giving ceremonies for those on accredited courses, lectures and quiz evenings.

• The Building Surveying students at Liverpool John Moores University were the winners at the RICS matrics Merseyside & IoM quiz evening (whilst their lecturers finished in 4th place).

• At the Royal Agricultural College, RICS matrics Gloucestershire held a Q&A session with potential APC candidates.

• RICS matrics Manchester attended a Careers Day at The University of Salford with 71 students signing up for student membership.

• RICS matrics Marches met with students at Harper Adams University and welcomed student members to their committee meetings to represent student interests.

Promotion & ProfileInter-ProfessionalThe connections made with other professions can often be vital for helping members make essential business contacts. RICS matrics has a strong link with many professional bodies at a local level and these are created and enhanced by joint events.

Many RICS matrics local groups held 45 well attended events of this kind intotal during 2010-11 with many groups liaising with many professions at once.

Some of those groups and professions met included:

• Shropshire Young Professionals

• Derby Young Lawyers

• Women in Property

• Bournemouth Chamber of Commerce

• Preston Young Professionals

• Association of Project Managers

• Forum for Tomorrow

• British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM)

Social MediaAs social media continues to grow in the workplace from useful tool to a vital communication method, RICS matrics has seen positive results from its social media output.

Facebook groups were set up for many local groups and at a national level which by the end of 2010–11, saw 1 887 members across 22 group pages. RICS matrics uses facebook to promote smaller, more social events that would not be applicable for publishing on www.rics.org and has proved highly successful in doing so.

Towards the end of the 2010–11 session, an RICS matrics LinkedIn page was established. This continues to grow and it is hoped that during the next 12 months, for many local groups to also be represented with their own group page to encourage networking at a local and regional level.

WebsiteAs the main portal of information for members, the RICS matrics web-pages are vital to communication. In only the second year since access statistics have been available, overall viewing of the RICS matrics pages have risen by an impressive 56.20% with 125 736 viewings compared with 2009-10’s 80 497.

E-NewsRICS matrics relies on e-newsletters to convey news and information across the membership which helps keep RICS members up to date with the latest goings on, be it a report of an Assembly or a call for members to have their say whilst also highlighting any key events in their area in the coming months.

RICS matrics UK circulated quarterly e-newsletters on a national level during 2010-11 which were read by 17 575.

In addition to the national e-newsletters, local and regional e-newsletters are also circulated with a more geographical focus. In 2010-11, 75 of these were sent highlighting events such as Christmas Balls to CPD lectures.
