way and turned the Challenger over to a custom painter. It was stripped of its drivetrain and suspension, hung onto a rotisserie, and custom painted from nose to tail, roof to floorpan in a multi-hued paint style known as “panels” that originated with customizers in the late 1950’s. Meanwhile a small block 340 c.i. engine was located and modified to the degree of the paint work. This engine was chromed and had a huge supercharger that protruded through a custom hole in the original Rallye hood. With custom wheels and grille, the car was dubbed the “Heat Wave Challenger”. It was featured in a big indoor event known as the World of Wheels in St. Louis, Missouri, where it was displayed with mirrors reflect-ing the pristine underside. Once a muscular pony car, now a glitzy show pony. You gotta wonder what this Challenger would say about that, if only it could. It’s unknown how long this phase lasted in the Challeng-er’s life. But once again, it was sold. In 2005 the new owner removed the engine and suspension and for a second time hung the car from a rotisserie. It was painted the 1970 color C7 Plum Crazy that remains to this day. While the paint was being ap-plied a Shak-er hood was installed and the scoop fastened to a six pack

OCT 2018

Some of our vintage Mopars have been around for fifty years, some more, some less, and survived sev-eral owners who have had their way with them. In the case of this 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T, it could tell you quite a story, if it could only talk. But its present owners, Clubmembers Jeff and Julie Walker, can tell you at least some of its history. For those who remember, the famous Dodge Fever ads were run from 1968 through 1971 and kicked off its optional Scat Pack V-8 per-formance vehicles which included the Challenger and Challenger R/T models. The Scat Pack cars sport-ed “bumble bee” stripes on the rear deck, a potent warning to Brand X muscle cars. In 1970 owners could join the Scat Pack Club. For three bucks per year, members got a Mopar Performance catalog, wallet card, jacket patch, bumper sticker, forty-page racing guide, the monthly Dodge Performance News, and the quarterly Dodge Scat News. What a deal. Originally F8 Dark Green Metallic with black interior, this Scat Pack R/T had the rare 440/6 Pack V-code option from the factory. That option included the Super Track Pack which featured a 4.10 geared Sure Grip rear differential with a Dana 9.75” ring gear. Brakes in this package were 10.75” front disks and 10.5” rear drums. The original owner stirred the A-833 four speed transmission with an iconic Pistol Grip shifter that pro-truded from the optional console. At some point the original engine was lost, probably blown up in a drag race incident. If the car could talk, what a story could be. In the ‘80’s, a new owner had Dodge Fever in a big

carburetor setup on a 440 block with a correct casting date. New 15”x7” Rallye wheels were installed and except for the color and Shaker hood, the Challenger was returned to its as-built look. From 2015 until 2012 the R/T was in the midwest. Several months ago, the car changed owners again, this time into the hands of Jeff and Julie. Their 1968 Plymouth GTX was in R & J Motors in Escondido for a repair, and the Challenger happened to be there. It was for sale. The Walkers decided it was too nice to pass up. To accommodate his bum left knee, Jeff had R & J install a hydraulic throw-out bearing to actuate the clutch. Mean-while, Jeff and Julie are researching

it’s complete history and trying to locate the original engine. For now it’s a fine driver and beautiful stablemate to their 2009 R/T Challeng-er.

Can you imag-ine? “Yo, I got a 5.7 liter Hemi. Whachoo got?” Yeah. If only they could talk.

Above: This R/T came with the optional console and Pistol Gtip shifter. Right: Very few ‘70 Challengers had a Shaker hood from the factory, but a previous owner made this modifcation to the replacement 440/6 Pack.

Above:, right Sometime in the ‘80’s the R/T hit the show circuit with this wild paint scheme and wilder chromed and blown 340 small block.

This Plum Crazy 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 440/6 Pack recently found its way from the midwest and into the garage of Clubmembers Jeff and Julie Walker. Over the years the previous owners morphed it from a Dark Green Metallic muscle pony car, to a show pony, and finally to what you see today.

Jeff and Julie with their 2009 and 1970 Challenger R/T stablemates.
